My apologies if this issue has been discussed in another thread. I hadn't opened Recovery since just before I upgraded to Win 10 and did a backup prior. Today I notice that there is no longer a Backup option, only Restore. I contacted Samsung Online Support and they said Recovery versions 5 and 6 do not support the Backup option on Win 10, only ver 7 does and my laptop (940X5J) can't have it. My only option is to go back to 8.1. Say it ain't so!

    Hi MikeB17,

We saw the same problem with SRS5 (supporting only Win7) after upgrading to Win8.x. I would expect, if you manually re-install Win8.1 on your disk, that SRS6 will allow you to restore your Win8.1 backups. It may depend on how much Win10 has messed up the partitions, though. Ever since Win8, Microsoft likes to do that.

Member @Gulfmaster posted here how he was able to create a new Win10 "factory image" as his baseline backup.

No, I won't be going back to 8.1. I'll find another solution. As always, thanks.

Right, I didn't think so. But if you want to still have SRS functional, check out @Gulfmaster's post (the one I linked). Sounds like he got it working with Win10 quite easily.

Maybe I'm missing something but all he says is to format the hd, do a clean install of Win 10, then a backup with Recovery. That's it? The fix is a format and clean install and you'll have the Backup option again??

If he formatted the disk (wiping all partitions) he would have had to re-create SRS before installing Win10 (which requires making an Admin Tool USB before wiping), then create a new Initial Image of the Win10 installation in SRS Management Mode.

There is a general guide for these things in the sticky list.

    Hi Dannemand and MikeB17 -

    MikeB17 is right,
The option to back up does not appear in the latest version of Samsung Recovery Solution for Windows 10 (v6.1.0.1)
The only options available now are to either make a disk copy (if you're switching hard drives) or save a factory image.

The workaround is to go back one version of the recovery solution (v 6.0.12.18).

I do have the installer with me and if the mods allow, could share it with you, if needed.

Thank you, both. I understand better now: You're saying SRS6 still works with Win10, but just there is no Backup option (only Disk Copy and Factory Image options). I had understood that SRS simply didn't work after upgrading to Win10 -- as was the case with SRS5 (Win7 based) after upgrading to Win8.x.

Is this in the Windows SRS app , in the F4 Recovery or both?

If the older SRS version that still has the Backup option is available anywhere on samsung.com or in SW Update, I would prefer to just link/refer to that. Otherwise sharing it is fine.

    Thanks again.

It would have been nice if Samsung Support had told me that instead of telling me that my only option is to go back to Win 8.1. I'm not finding the version, if you could share the installer it would be much appreciated.

    Dannemand,
    To confirm, that's right
SRS6 works with Windows 10, but there is no backup option in either the windows app or F4 recovery.

I ran into a problem when I tried the F4 option (or booting with the Recovery USB) after going back to the prev Recovery version (which has the Backup option). I'm getting a Reagent - System Error "The program can't start because api-ms-win-core-heap-12-1.0.dll is missing. Try reinstalling".
I updated the Recovery program back to the new (current) version and f4 works but I have no Backup option. Any ideas?

Hi @MikeB17 - you will have to activate the recovery partition with v6.1.0.1 installed.

After this, you will be able to roll back to the previous version to be able to take backups.

Hi, maybe my explanation wasn't good. I can roll back to the previous Recovery version and take backups no problem. The option is there. But I can't use f4 recovery or the recovery usb. I get the same error. If I update back to the v6.1.01 the f4 to Restore works but there is no Backup option, hence no backups. I did a backup yesterday on the old ver and updated back to current today so it should work if I need it. If this is what's required fine but I thought maybe there's a better way. I hope that explains it.

    @MikeB17 - I understand your problem.

I'm assuming from your previous posts that your Windows 10 installation is an upgrade from a previous version.
I believe this is what is causing the errors you are facing which could be solved if you reactivated the recovery partition.
    This with v6.1.0.1 installed.

Would you mind trying to run Step 2 in the program "Admintool.exe" located on your USB Admin Tool?
This will create a new program "RecoverySettingsSV.exe" on your desktop, which you will have to run with administrator priviliges (right click and "Run as Administrator")

I request if you could post back with the results.

If that still does not solve your problem, then try doing the same thing with v6.0.12.18.

Thanks Gulfmaster but I'm ok running the current version (that works w/o the Backup option) and going back to the earlier ver when I need a backup. Then repeat. As long as that works I'm ok. Hopefully, I'll never need it. Appreciate your help.

hi, noted. I don't have problems running the Samsung RE with either of the versions installed.
