EDIT: If you want possible fixes to all these issues go through the thread. BUT If you have suggestions for how to completely remove this underclocking when AC power is not in PLEASE POST

I have this laptop with 2 questions.

One. How do i stop the trackpad from locking up when i type. I've went through all the steps and the elan settings has no plamtrack settings where it should be i also was in another thread that had all sorts of regedit ideas but none worked for me. I would just disable elan but i love the gestures for opening new tabs.

Secondly how can i make it stop underclocking when i am running in on battery i changed all the battery power settings to the same as my on ac settings and it still didnt fix it none of the power plans fix it.

I'm assuming it has to to do with the gaming mode dial but i can't figure out how to make it stop going from like 700 mhz to 75 (which you can clearly see happening in a gpu monitoring program when you unplug the cord)

NOW I do know that playing games on battery is unrealistic and at best it will last 30 minutes. But for whatever reason i would like the option.

I too have found no way to enable the touchpad while typing (tried the various registry tweaks you mentioned).

What software are you using to monitor the GPU? If you let me know, I can investigate whether the clock speed is hardwired to the mode dial, as I've done a clean install of Windows and don't have any of the mode-changing or power management software installed.

BTW - would you be kind enough to comment on the battery?

If you don't have the mode changing software installed is the 675M enabled at all times on full clocks?

There's also hwmonitor pro you could try to log it but that might be just for temps. Look it up.

    Hello again,

Ok - as far as I can see, without any supporting software installed, the "mode dial" does have an effect on the speed of the GPU clock.

In either of the uppermost positions, the full range of clock speeds are possible: when using 2D applications the clock is 50Mhz; when playing a 3D game it goes up to 620Mhz. This happens automatically.

When the mode dial is in either of the lower two positions ("library" and "economy"), the GPU clock is throttled to no more than 70Mhz even if a 3D application is running.

Also, in case you're interested, the mode dial still changes the keyboard backlight colour and level without the supporting software installed.

However the backlight is not customisable - the WASD keys are always red and the others are always blue.

Edit: the above tests were all on AC power.

    None of those worked John.

As for the questions i used EVGA Precision x or something like that.

As for the battery i rarely use it not plugged in but when i do and its in the very bottom mode dial it actually lasts for a fairly long time maybe time flew by but it seemed atleast 2-3 hours which considering whats behind this behemoth is shocking.

Though in game mode with no ac in i can't testify as per my issue of it downclocking. Haven't tried out any of the other modes.

If you are looking to buy this laptop other than these issues i am absolutely loving it. The keyboard backlit off/on button is wonderful and for once with the speaker/mute/wifi/backlit buttons. I am loving them.

I do have a complaint that i wish you could change the LED Colors that are activating in gaming mode to be used on other modes. Would be fun to have blue and red keyboard in normal mode.

Edit: I'm wondering where the mode dial is in the registry so maybe we can alter what settings it changes.

Edit 2: I've located it in regedit under the samsung folder. Modeshift and also in the controlcenter folder it mentions eco mode but theres nothing i can see here that would downclock it. nor does it have much in the modeshift folder

Does anyone know another name for modeshift to find in the registry? Or do you think its hardcoded into the software and its not going to be a regedit option?

This may sound silly, but there's a driver for the ELAN trackpad that was updated earlier this month on Samsung's support page. Have you tried those?

There is also a bios update if you download the firmware updater software and run that.

Yeah unfortunately i have no palmtrack option there. Also another slight issue with the laptop for future buyers i don't know if its just my unit but the screen feels odd when you open it and you hear cracks and the casing seperates for a second then snaps back in place it seems.

    It's a bit concerning.

I have the previous model 700G7A. Its exactly the same chassis and screen etc, and i dont have this problem. One thing that has happened to me though is that because the lid is quite heavy the screen has been scratched by the keyboard believe it or not, so be careful and put a cloth or something inbetween when closed. I tried to RMA it but Samsung Support told me they could only replace the screen if i put the original hard drive back in the machine ( i have an OCZ SSD installed).... W.T.F has that got to do with the LCD????? LOL

I have no plans to return it to support unless the screen flys off its hinges! XD. Still trying to find stuff in regedit about modeshift so maybe we can fix the downclocking. Samsungs support is useless.

The downclocking by the mode dial appears to be baked into the hardware, since it's happening here without any of the supporting software installed.

However when I was testing the factory installation I found that other power-related settings (in EasySettings as well as the mode dial) are implemented by two services - "Samsung Device Configuration" and "Smart Settings". You might try temporarily disabling those.

But be mindful that you will lose functionality like the laptop waking automatically when the lid is opened while those services are stopped.

Edit: Samsung have just told me that the laptop is not intended to be run continuously from AC power!!!

Using regedit i have searched for 73 which is what it downclocks too when it is on battery but i could not modify it in live windows. I am thinking of attempting to go into safe mode and modifying it.

Have you noticed any difference when disabling "CPU power saving" in the BIOS? I couldn't work out exactly what that did.

So has anyone found more information on this subject since the last post? To be completely honest this laptop is AMAZING in performance and speed.. But i probably wouldn't have bought it if i knew you for one couldn't play it in gamers mode or atleast change the clock of it without it freaking out about its mode dial settings. And that the blue and red lights are only on in gaming mode. I wish i could enable those in every mode because they are so pretty.

I think im just going to have to set a day beside and just go through the registry again it would be neat to create a script that changes the keyboard lighting and create flashing effects switching between clear led blue led and red led and running down each key activating since as i can tell atleast it has a seperate led for each key. I will report back on my findings.

Edit: I also deeply apologize for the triple post.

For future reference here is how the modes are numbered

    Balanced mode 0

    Game mode 1

    Green mode 2

    library mode 3

(Even though in order of the mode dial this makes 0 sense)

I've noticed balanced mode will run when on ac at the clock that gaming mode runs at. BUT when you unplug ac and plug it back in it does not reclock you have to switch modes plug ac in then go back for it to reclock.. still looking

I have one of these laptop arriving tomorrow. I will be using it for recording & music production and not gaming. I think I will probably use balanced mode initially to see what kind of performance I get. My recording projects are fairly CPU intensive 50-70 tracks with lots of VST plug-ins. I needed something with two hard drives to give me storage space for sample libraries. 16gb memory is very good as well for what I need. I'll let you know how I get on.

I am waiting for my Samsung Series 7 Gamer NP700G7C-S02US 17.3-Inch to be delivered. Just curious whether i can replace the 2 original HDD with 2 Samsung 840 Pro Series 2.5-Inch 256 GB SATA 6GB/s SSD and install the SSD as raid 0 on the laptop. Please advice. And is it better to have a clean installation or migrate/cloning using the Acronis® Migrate Easy 7.0 by Backup software for data backup and disaster recovery in Windows and Linux - Acronis.

Can Acronis properly clone Windows 8? You may do better to use the Samsung Recovery Solution provided with the computer (see this post, for example).

I have an Apricorn USB to SATA adaptor and I used EZ Gig IV to clone Win 8 when my SSD started flaking out to another new SSD. Worked great. I just did this a week or so ago.

I had originally used the adapter when I bought the SSD to clone my Win 7 install on the original 750G drive to the new SSD. That worked great as well.

Funny thing is I reformatted and verified the old SSD and it's reporting no errors now. Not sure I trust it, it has a 3 year warranty so I might rma it anyway. There was 1024 read errors during the clone so something was definitely amiss. I've checked the alignment of the old and both were fine. Shrug.

I do use Acronis to do weekly backups but I haven't yet used it to clone anything, ezgig does only that rather simply.
