A question (that might very well be stupid): why exactly are bloatwares so annoying? Can't you just go to the program manager and remove them all manually?

(I don't have the 700Z5A but I play on buying it, if that matters)

that is good to know! it is the NP700Z5 model?
I wonder if 12 GB ram are supported if you can also put in two 8GB bars to reach 16 GB... would be great since I want to use it for video editing.

2x8GB are impossible, one 4GB is not removable. If you have the money you can try to find a 12GB DIMM to get 16GB...

Could you please test and see if you are getting close to 500 MB/s read write speeds with the Vertex SSD? This is a SATA III device capable of these speeds and I wonder if the computer supports SATA III.

For folks who are going to swap out the wireless card for the Intel 6230 and the Hard Drive for a SSD, it might be more cost effective to buy the Best Buy version of the laptop and save $200.

    Thanks for looking this up.

Nervous about what? We've already had a 100 page discussion about the screen. You're info or statement contributed nothing new and was just meaningless, jeez.

Anyone know the dimensions of the Optical drive in the series 7? There might be caddies on the market that could fit inside the series 7

on settings i put maximal preformance for hard applications, but who knows if it works ok.

Is anybody else's touchpad uneven. The lower left corner of my touchpad does not sit very high up on the frame. its further down from palmrest then the rest of the touchpad.

Aright guys! Let me share my story if I may.

So originally (about a week ago) I had planned on getting this Samsung 7 series in 15. It is sold out on bestbuy online here in Canada, so I was hoping to get it shipped to buffalo from amazon (S04 version) and pick it up from there.

After finding about this topic thru google and following along, i've read each and everypost here.

The reason why this laptop initially caught my attention is because of the slim macbook pro-esque design (essentially what i was looking for) and more importantly, the main heating vent on the back (i hate the sides).

The only slim laptop in 15 inch that are like this, are the Dell xps 15z, the samsung 7 series and ONE other which i had come to learn about after reading thru this tpoic. i didnt end up going for the dell... bcuz it had inferior processors (not quad cores).

I actually ended up ordering the samsung 7 series from amazon and everythng. But after thinking really hard, and taking all it's shortcomings into factor (crappy space bar, hard to format, CRAPPY CRAPPY screen >> which is an utter embarrasement) and ALSO the HP EVNY 15 2012 into factor, I ended up cancelling the order.

Just this morning I ordered the HP ENVY 15 2012. (It was a little difficult since you can't get this here in canada, let alone get it customized, so I had to have my american friend pay for it then I paypal'd him the money, and he had HP ship to buffalo)

Why did I order it? Simple. It's the ONLY 15 inch SLIM MACBOOK pro-esque design that features high end processors, 150+ led's in backlit keyboard!!!, high ram expandability, 1080P SCREEN !!!, a CRAZY speaker set up as well as a nice subwoofer, and much more. Here's the cherry on top tho, there's a coupon code to get it a wopping 33% off and free 2 day shipping!!! Saved me $600 bucks off the factory price, and I felt like it was a steal. the ONLY drawback is the video card, as it may be a refresh of last years' models. But I didn't care because I have a desktop gaming rig at home overclocked the hell out, so the vid card on the lappy wouldn't be put to use regartdless. Still,it's a 1Ghz vid card that comes with it !

So that's that, in conclusion, HP Envy 15 > Samsung 7 series.

Thanks for all the feeback guys !

Not going to lie your just posting flamebait. Congrats on your order, but why tell us the story. Also, for anybody that reads that consider this. The Coupon code is going to expire, then the cost will be much higher. Additionally, the Envy is actually significantly larger. .6inches more width, and at least slightly larger in every dimension. You also sacrifice the turbo cache, and I highly doubt the envy will match the amazing battery life of this laptop. Also, while many would prefer it without it, I much prefer the number pad on my laptop. Makes working in excel so much easier. I would rather have this laptop, but to each his own. I just guess I don't get why the above needed to take up a significant portion of our thread. Additionally I find my trackpad on my Series 7 wonderful, and after playing with the SB Envy 14's touchpad I wouldn't be suprised if HP messes that up too.

I agree why come here and tell how bad it all is and how happy you are with it? this is not the right place to do. Also your statements about all bad in this forums are untrue myself and many other power users here are very happy with it. I have stated many times that am very happy with matte screens (finally a matte screen for a consumer laptop). I dunno what people ing about the screen is just fine. Matte screens are not for gaming anyone should know that because of the gel a like thin screen layer. This forum is not mine is better than yours... just find this really immature.

What is the graphics card on the envy 15? HP is not releasing this information?

While I am glad there is competition, what exactly does the ENVY 15 offer? Ignoring the speakers? Obviously the screen is utterly superb. Otherwise, it is bigger, heavier, poor battery life, questionable graphics card :dunno:

Anybody have specific links to comparisons regarding the screens? (not the ones from best buy)

Seems like the series 7 has everything i want, only the screen may be slightly lacking. kudos to samsung for a matte display though

No idea what you are talking about there. Space bar works fine for me, no problems at all. The touchpad took a day to getting used to, but after that and tweeking the settings it's excellent.

And the screen is pretty damn good, unless you intend to use this notebook in weird angles with alot of people watching movies. But if you are using the notebook as a single person for work or gaming or whatever, it's very good.

Oh well, you don't even know all the HP 15 Envy Specs, and still you bought it. Pretty much tells us that you just fell for the hype, not the actual machine.

And btw, the Envy is bigger and alot heavier. I pondered it for a short while, but I didn't want to drag around that with me.

Actually all three are supposedly designed by the same ODM. Apple does not own the "macbook pro" design, otherwise HP and Samsung will be sued by Apple again. (just like Apple VS Samsung)

Does anyone know if the battery on the Samsung 7 is user-replaceable by someone with a screwdriver and reasonable manual dexterity? I was looking at the BestBuy version in my local store and the sales rep claimed that the Samsung 7 batteries (along with the Macbook Pro's as well) were actually soldered in so a user could no longer just remove the bottom and unscrew/detach the battery anymore.

I found this hard to believe but he was insistent that this was true. I know I've seen videos of MBP battery replacements that didn't involve any soldering, but again he claimed that had changed. I would have a hard time sending my laptop in for a simple battery replacement, harddrive replacement, or RAM upgrade. Normally I'd discount this as bad info, but since Samsung sounds like they've soldered one of the RAM modules in, I'd appreciate it if anyone that has cracked one open has taken a look at the battery.

I'm glad you found a great laptop. However, since you ordered from Amazon, I would've suggested trying it out, and if you didn't like it, return it. A lot of things that people have been complaining about, especially the screen, are unfounded for me.

I actually love the screen. I've used IPS screens, LED screens. I have an iPad, Asus Transformer, Alienware M11x, and a Samsung 27 inch monitor; yet sometimes I still marvel at the beauty of this laptop, both screen and build. Sure, it looked a little washed out at first, but I used Spydercolor to calibrate the colors, and I never looked back. Yeah, there's a lot of "measurements" online to tell you how bad the screen is, but I think it's pretty good.

Spacebar? no problem at all here.

Has anyone researched the reason why this laptop is so hard to find in retail/online stores? I assume there is a production issue. I worry about buying a version of this from Microsoft Retail because I don't want it to be a model that is discontinued for some reason.

    Any thoughts?

    Just for anyone interested...
My 15.6 came in the mail today. A lot of things about it are great. I would almost say phenomenal. Other things though...not so great. Quality control almost appears to be nil on my machine.

This thing just doesn't fit together right. Here's a few pictures.

This is the left side of the keyboard. The top bezel is separating. I can push it down, but it pops back up after a while.

This is the bezel that surrounds the slot load DVD drive. This appears to be stuck on something, because when I push on it, I get resistance...As in, I push it back into place, it pushes back on me.

Both of these gaps are horribly obvious in the dark when the backlit keyboard bleeds out of them.

The fit of the machine, on top of the dead pixel I've found, are enough for it to get sent back.

(Moderator note: You can control the displayed size of the image by using the Image="width" tag. I set these images to 320.)

@alaskajoel, this is not a fault at all. Just loose two screw on the base of the laptop on each side by one or two turns, press the body inward with your thumb, by running your thumb from front end to the rear end. Finally tight the two screws.

Waste of money since I could wait 6 months if I wanted and next gen GPUs >7700 series & ivy bridge coming out in the same time frame is an appealing promise.
I'm also curious about the envy 14 spectre, and these kinds of sizes dont come out every 6 months. If HP drops the optical and slims it down whilst improving the battery life over the old envy 14 (which I am using right now) I'm sold.
I was interested in the chronos back in september but not anymore.
Could also be kick if they use their new design guideline for it http://www.theverge.com/2011/12/14/2635239/hp-brand-redesign-project-detailed-in-pictures-and-video

Guys, anyone else have a "problem" where whenever you launch a streaming video (YouTube, or whatever) your fan goes absolutely crazy?

I swear whenever I watch a video on the internet the fan goes at max speed or something. Any fix? If I set my pc on "silence mode" its performances suck...

Besides, I haven't found the program that controls how and when to switch between graphic cards...

Also, how do I disable the pop-up on my screen whenever I turn caps lock ON or OFF? This kind of popup is pretty neat for volume or brightness settings but I don't need it at all for caps lock...

    Thanks guys!

I was holding out for the 14 inch version and it was nowhere in sight. I then got wind of the HP and the more I read about it the more I was convinced it was also a good option. I used the coupon as well and ordered the first day it was available. To each his own. I hope those own bought the Sammy enjoy it as well as all who bought the HP.

My series 7 is being shipped to me now and my new Intel Wireless card is on the way.

Has anyone posted photo or video instructions on the tear down of this laptop?

I saw the written instruction on the wireless card replacement but I was hoping there was a step by step instruction manual for disassembly.

Look back, there were a PDF with opening instructions for swapping hard drive, but for the wifi card is the same... basicly: undo the screws and with your nails pull up the base gently starting from the hinge side, and then by running around the base. Do NOT apply much force.
