It's most likely running in "flex mode", which means 2GB of each stick are running in dual channel mode, while the remaining 2GB of the 4GB stick is running in single channel mode.

For more about the performance implications of different RAM combinations see the table I posted here. It is for the Sandy Bridge platform but the results with Ivy Bridge will be similar.

Is it advice-able to install windows on a separate partition?? Just received my 830 ssd and planning on doing a clean install
-
Could someone please help me out and check their power button to see if it wobbles slightly? Mine just doesn't seem as 'firm' as it could be and wondered if it was defective or normal.
-
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
I believe in trying to keep my data off the operating system partition to avoid the risk of loss in the event that Windows has to be wiped and reinstalled. However, the likelihood of needing to do that has reduced as Windows has got more mature.
John -
Thought so as well.

Is there a way to set the Fn keys to default. For example, to have F6 mute without hitting Fn+F6 and perform the default F6 function by hitting Fn+F6?
-
-
finally, i got this thing in my hands ... and am overall satisfied with it. (more on that later...)
but the issue is, the hard-disk has already started making "click" noises!!! Though it has not shown any faulty signs yet, is that something that i can contact Samsung ... or i have no choice but to wait when this "low" clicking noise will eventually become the click of death
and strangely, it usually starts when the laptop is idle. -
@yacir: If store return or exchange isn't an option, I would contact Samsung right away. It's not supposed to click, I'm sure they know that.
-
Thanks for the quick reply.
yes, i passed the store return/exchange timeline. so that is not n option.
I will surely contact Samsung for that. it is an early sign of HDD failure.
EDIT: Anyone knows their global service policy? Rep asked me to file an online repair request, but the online service does not allow me to select address outside US. -
The unfortunate thing about the FN-Lock key is that you can't use any of the keys it controls without disabling FN-Lock again. Like Delete/Eject (very annoying). I wish after enabling Fn-Lock you could hold Fn on those function-locked keys to re-enable the original use temporarily.
-
My hard drive made one loud strange click noise yesterday but hasn't done anything since. I'm hoping this is just one of those things and not any sign of an upcoming HDD failure. Can anyone advise what to do?
-
Hi !
Excuse me but can someone help me and describe me the pro and cons of the Samsung NP700Z5C S01US VS the Asus UX32VD ?
Which battery life for the Samsung ? (maximum)
Thanks ! -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
The clicking may be parking the drive heads during idle periods. If you are worried about impending HDD failure then you can run Active SMART as a trial for a month. It monitors the drives SMART (self monitoring) data and will warn if there are changes indicative of a health problem.
This page suggests that all Samsung notebooks have a one year international warranty. It lists the contacts in the different countries.
John -
Another option (free!!! but no warning indicator
) is Passmark's DiskCheckup -- I have it set to run 4 times a day and it's easy to check with a tray icon:

Can someone answer me ?
-
Hmmm, 1 hour 24 minutes since your first post -- sounds like you need a response ASAP. Since you want to compare 2 machines, you might try the " What Notebook Should I Buy" forum, which is really better equipped for those kinds of questions.
Anyway, this is a pretty long thread, so I'd encourage you to get a big drink, a comfy chair, and read though it. You'll probably find that most people here are reporting battery life in the 5-6 hour range on the Samsung.
-Matt -
Just wait a little (more than one hour), so that someone experienced with both laptops will have a chance to see your question
-
Excuse me, I was impatient because of some limited stocks in my store
.
Sorry if I annoyed ! :/ -
Oh I see. No worries, I understand that perfectly. Afraid I have no experience with the Asus, so I cannot help with a comparison. Hopefully someone will see this in time who knows them both.
-
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
I would say that you are comparing oranges and bananas. People usually compare the Asus UX32VD with the Samsung Series 9. The NP900Z5C is a much larger and more powerful notebook. The 14" NP500Z3C is nearer in size to the Asus.
John -
Thank you so much !
-
I just finished my clean install and I can't seem to get samsung recovery solution 5 to install. I still have my old hard drive with the recovery partition and I was wondering if I should make a new partition on my ssd to accommodate the software or should I not bother? I have the dvd that came with the laptop and a dvd containing the software and drivers.

Hey all,
Putting together a big document on laptops and I need some information about both the 15.6 and 17.3 version.
Does anyone know the dates the 15.6 and the 17.3 one were released? -
Anyone someone? -
Mine moves around a tiny bit. Not something I noticed really.
-
Simply, will you recommend the NP700Z5C-S01 ? Didn't see nothing better than that computer on the net with this price... Maybe the VAIO S but i can't wait 1 month to be delivered !
-
after trying the Samsung Series 9, S13, S15 and UX32, i would go for the NP700Z5C-S01. i was about to drive to a Sony Store and pick up the S15 until i discovered this thread and the NP700Z5C-S01. i'll post my feedback later tonight/early tomorrow. my S01 is supposed to be delivered today for pick up.
but the decision all really depends on your needs and goals. r u looking for portability vs power or a good mix? is battery life important? do u need the best screen? do u need an optical drive? etc... -
I'd still suggest the "which one should I buy" thread is gonna serve your needs better, but since your here:
(1) Are you a student, professional, retired?
(2) Will the machine stay on a desk, or will you carry it each day?
(3) What kinds of computing tasks do you do? The beauty of the Samsung is that it will handle some of the most intensive tasks you can throw at it (quad-core i7!!!!). Do you need that much power?
(4) Do you game? Which games? Anything intensive enough that the graphics card (640m) can handle, or is that too much power? Too little?
(5) How much battery life do you need?
(6) What are your design tastes? Do you like MacBook-like unibody styles, or lighter plastics? Do you drool when you see the MBAir, or think "where's the beef?" LOL
Anyway, that's a start. Sorry for throwing all these questions at you, but here's my logic: if you want to know, "Is the S01US a beautiful, fast machine?" the answer is "YES!!!". But if we don't really know what you're looking for, you may end up hating it and discovering that it doesn't serve your needs. Spend a few minutes introducing yourself, and you'll get much better advice.

EDITED: found my answer...9.5 mm hard drives will fit.
i'm looking at the Kingston HyperX 3K SH103S3/240G 240GB Solid State Drive.
link above if u want this drive for $150. if you're close to a Microcenter, price match and get $35 MIR to get this drive for ~$135.
-
Finally I ordered the NP700Z5C-S01 and i'm going to be delivered tomorrow
.
@gadgetrants I'm a student in university who needs a good battery life, gaming performances, a rather good resolution and a display just for a little of Photoshop.
And the first thing that brought me here is the Samsung Chronos' design !
-
Lots of youngsters on here. Not sure if they'd get the reference.
-
so i picked up the laptop and i am looooooooovin it.
i really feel like this is better than the S15 overall. the only thing the S15 has over this is obviously the 1080P IPS screen, but this display is perfectly fine.
i'll post up more thoughts later, but right now i just wanna run this laptop setup and play some games. -
Ah, then you are DEFINITELY in the RIGHT place! Excellent choice -- keep us posted!
Hence the LOL.
But you're still right. I am so....ooooold....
Speaking of the S15, have you seen http://forum.notebookreview.com/wha...0-impressions-sony-s15-samsung-np700z5c.html?
-Matt -
Hey everyone so I am interested in getting this laptop, but there are so many different versions that I am having trouble on which one to choose. There is the one listed on the Samsung website and is on sale at Bestbuy. Samsung - Series 7 15.6" Laptop - 8GB Memory - 1TB Hard Drive - Silver - NP700Z5C-S01UB
Then there are two different versions on amazon. The NP700Z5C-S01US and NP700Z5C-S03US.
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Serie...d=1348286406&sr=8-1&keywords=samsung+series+7
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Serie...86428&sr=8-2&keywords=samsung+series+np700z5c
Why are these more expensive than the bestbuy one when the bestbuy version has more memory/hard drive space? I have looked for the bestbuy version (NP700Z5C-S01UB) Online but I can hardly find any information on it. So can you guys let me know the differences/which one is the best version? -
Tradeoff: S01UB has the weaker 630m (with 512MB), while the S01US has the better 640m (1GB). So if gaming matters, the S01US is the best option. Also, most have opted for the S01US and just upgraded the RAM (and sometimes swapped SSD for HDD) themselves.
The S03US is a waste of time -- it's the S01US with 2GB more RAM for an additional $150. Not worth it.
-Matt -
Thanks for the response! So I really don't game on my laptop so should I lean towards the SO1UB?
-
I'd say it's almost a tie. I would grab the S01UB if the convenience of getting it now at Best Buy is a plus, and also their 30-day return policy. Otherwise, if the additional cost (sales tax) is an issue, I'd get the S01US (if you can) tax-free from Amazon or Newegg.
-Matt -
I have received my new laptop and it's fantastic but please where can I update the BIOS ?
Edit : I think I found it ! "Easy Software Manager" -
how do i post my own discussion tittle in notebookreview, i am new here.
-
click on post new thread at top left of page.
-
I think we should try and get the original post updated with all the things people keep asking, so they don't have to go back through and read the entire thread.
-
good idea
btw, i'm in love with this laptop. fit, finish and overall quality. just installed an extra 4 GB of RAM (8 GB total), did a fresh install of Windows and got everything setup. i haven't had any issues so far *knock on wood*
the only thing i noticed was that the headphone jack is VERY tight. inserting and removing from this jack requires a good enough of force (at least on my laptop).
also, has anyone been able to boot from USB stick? i created a bootable Windows 7 USB stick and did the following:
1) As you restart your system and the Samsung logo screen is displayed, hit the "F2" key and you will be led to the BIOS setup.
2) Select the "Advanced" menu item, and set the "Fast BIOS mode" item to disabled.
3) Then, go to "Boot" menu item and select the device boot order in "Boot Device Priority" menu. A flash thumb drive is identified in the system as "USB HDD" - so make sure it comes before the installed HDD.
i tried the USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports, but it doesn't boot from USB and just loads Windows right up. i'm assuming the bootable USB stick is at fault here... -
I think there's a discussion of USB booting not too far back on this thread
but in the meantime: if you tap ESC while booting do you get a list of boot devices? You might see the flash drive show up there.
-Matt -
are you referring to this link?
when i tried ESC during boot, it didn't show a list of boot devices. not that it matters much now since i just used DVD to re-install Windows, but it's buggin me. i've done it before on other PC's, but not on this for some reason
-
Yep, that was the discussion -- I don't think it was totally resolved if things would work via USB flash drive. Sorry the bogus suggestion to try ESC.
-Matt -
no worries! thanks for the suggestion.
-
I bought this laptop just few days ago and I must say I'm in all. I got the Z5C-S01EE one since we don't have any other version in my country.
Only downside is that it as an i5 instead of i7 and that it comes with 6GB ram. But still, this is probably the best choice for me, a university student which needs good portability, good performance and great battery life. -

I brought this laptop yesterday, Buy Samsung Chronos 700Z5C-S01 Laptop, Intel Core i7, 2.3GHz, 8GB RAM, 1TB+8 SSD, 15.6", Silver online at JohnLewis.com I love it so far but a few problems that you may be able to help with. 1st off when first using the laptop it seemed slugglish, although that seems to have cleared itself up now, maybe it has something to do with the Express cache for the first few days. Has anyone noticed this? 2nd the Battery, Samsung states 8.9 hours, windows is reporting 2.5 hours fully charged?? and finally I closed the lid last night went to bed, opened the lid this morning and was greeted with a blue screen of death (Lovely) soemthing about usbport.sys, any ideas?
thanks in advance
