Could you check the panel used in the laptop when you receive it please? Just in case there are variations in the panels used.

Wow, that's a great deal. It's a shame that there's 15% tax in Canada or I would have ordered one and picked it up on my next trip up there. I'll wait for it to release in the US and save the taxes which is the same as the XBOX is worth

Ok so this XBOX offer in Canada got me searching, and it turns out that there is a similar offer in the US too, but it's for students only (with verified enrollment):

    Students, We’ve Got You Covered

As I was searching, I also learned that this NP700Z5C delay in the US may be a good thing. If you wait to purchase until after June 2, you will get a (almost) free upgrade to Windows 8 when it comes out:

Windows 8 upgrade deal “confirmed” to be $15 | Ubergizmo

The possible problem is that they may require you to buy the laptop from the Microsoft store. Full details will probably be out next week

13% tax here in Ontario. Some provinces (i.e. Alberta)have only 6% tax.

Not sure what province you'd be getting it in. In BC, HST is 12%. Mine was purchased for business purchases, so I'll get the HST back next tax year.

There used to be a refund program for sales tax for non residents, but it was cancelled in 2010.

If I could make a suggestion, the current thread title is too similar to the other Samsung Laptop threads and makes it hard to pick out:
"Samsung Series 7 Lovers - Here's The NP700Z5C Ivy Bridge!"

How about re-naming the title to:
"Ivy Bridge Samsung Series 7 - The NP700Z5C is Here!"

For anyone who has bought this computer from FutureShop already, just a couple of questions.

Did yours come with the French keyboard, the left shift is tiny and the Enter buttom is that tall type?

Also, the right click on the track pad...does it seem a bit messed up to you? Mine looses it's spring once you get to the far right. I don't remember if it was always like that or if it just happened out of nowhere.

Other than that this thing is beautiful.

By the way, the model I have is NP700Z5C-S01CA...just so we're clear.

    Thanks everyone.

Yup, French keyboard. Using SharpKeys and doing ok. No trackpad issue like that for me. I turned off the touch to click and the jumpiness problem is gone.

Good news for those of you like me who want Windows 8 but don't want to wait to buy their new Samsung laptop. Microsoft just announced today the $14.99 Windows 8 upgrade program that starts tomorrow:
    https://windowsupgradeoffer.com/en-US/Home/ProgramInfo

So if you buy a PC between June 2 and January 31 with Windows 7, you'll get Windows 8 almost for free when they release it this fall :)

I saw on a site that these Ivy bridge models have a 4 watt speaker (compared to the 3watt from last generation).

Does anyone know if it's the same JBL speakers put on the 17.3 inch Series 7?

Go to Device Manager by typing devmgmt.msc at the search box within start menu. Right click on the monitor, select properties and in the context menu look for hardware ID.

Unfortunately the 15" doesn't get the good JBL speakers of the 17" version. :(
Which is a shame since the JBL speakers are great, while the speakers in the 700z5C is average at best.

I was dead-set on a 15.6" notebook. Although this thread has convinced me that the 17" Z7C is superior to the Z5C in everyway, I feel a 17" laptop would be way too large for my purposes. Am I not doing myself a favor by sacrificing size for JBL speakers, an improved touchpad, and a better screen quality, not to mention the 650M? *drool*

Also, does the NP700Z5C-S01US ($1150) have a different graphics card than the NP700Z5C-S03US ($1350)? All online retailers seem to omit this particular specification, I'd guess a 1GB 640M vs 2GB-640M respectfully?

The $1299.99 S03US model isn't available to purchase yet, hence "Pre-order" so you didn't miss out. I believe he ordered the $1099.99 S01US.

What's the difference between the S01 and S03? From the best I can tell it looks like the more expensive one has a smaller HD and more RAM? Does the 01 have a backlit keyboard and the expressgate? These are what's stopping me from ordering it. If Samsung had the darn things on their website it would be much simpler. If someone can confirm the $1099 in stock at amazon has a BL keyboard and express I'll have it next day shipped. My Dell Studio dies yesterday and I need a new PC ASAP. Ivy Bridge options are extremely limited right now.

Isn't Expressgate an Asus feature? Samsung phone support: "The S01US does have a backlit keyboard. The only differences between the S01US and S03US are 6GB vs 8GB DDR3 RAM, and 1GB vs 2GB GT 640M. And they both have 750GB 7200RPM HDDs." I hope he's right, because I'm pulling the trigger.

Just curious, did you ever consider getting the 17" for the better screen, touchpad, speakers, and 650M? The price is $300 steeper at TD, I'm somewhat undecided.

Yeah, that's asus. I think samsungs is express cache. At any rate I ended up ordering an Asus N56. As much as I like the aesthetics of the Sammy in the end I just couldn't give up my 1080P screen, the aesthics are darn close though but it was the screen that swayed me. Same CPU, ram, Hd size and a bit better gpu with the asus. Can't really go wrong with either.

I did consider the 17 but i really dont want a laptop that much bigger. I own the 14in np700z3a and love it, but i think 15.6 is my limit for a laptop! If I want bigger i might as well be sitting behind my desktop. I think of a laptop as portable thing.

Question for people writing about better display quality on 17" than 15.6": are you referring only to display resolution or also to viewing angles, blacks levels, color saturation ?

The first samsung chronos was my first choice monthes ago but when i saw its display from live in a shop then i realized that it was a very bad display.
Hope something changed with this refresh,.

    Thanks

17" has far better display then 15" old ones, FHD, very good viewing angles, brightness, colors etc. Maybe when Samsung will refresh this 15" with Ivy Bridge, they will use same panel in 15" as they use it in 17"

    Check some discussion here.

The screen is the only issue I have with the 15" Samsung. If someone who has bought it from Amazon can see if the panel has been refreshed, it would be highly appreciated!

That's really interesting, you get the 640 GPU and basically everything else as the S03 and it's only $1100. What am I missing here? That's really cheap, I'm probably going ot buy this model this week

I don't understand why all the versions leaked so far in the US only have a 750GB. They must really still be hurting on HDD production capacity

I'm just glad it has the 640m with 1gb GDDR5.

I'm curious what the S03 model offers though. I only saw 8gb DDR3 with the same 750gb HD. The only thing I can think of that's worth the price increase is a 640m with 2gb GDDR5.

    So 1GB Graphics RAM + 2GB System RAM = +$200?

That just doesn't compute for me. That's like 20 bucks wholesale worth of RAM

Truciet, can you assess the viewing angles, contrast, and black levels? Have they noticeably improved from the previous Chronos 7 models?

However unjustifiably overpriced those upgrades are, it might not be out of the question. From 6GB DDR3 to 8GB DDR3: +$75, from 1GB 640M to 2GB 640M: +$100. So the price difference of $200 could possibly be as such. Maybe the S03US has Windows 7 Pro? Samsung Support was completely clueless.

My Canadian model Z5C S01CA has the same lackluster display as the Z5A. There is no improvement there. All the improvements are in CPU/GPU department. The improvement there is substantial, the IB and 640M combination works really well, if you can get past the display issues.

Since I was pleased with everything else, I tried to live with the display. I couldn't deal with it and returned the unit. A couple days later I relented and bought my open box unit back. I ended up taking it back again last week, as I really couldn't stand the display, much as I tried.

It wasn't the worst display I've used, but I bought this for a combination travel and play machine and it wasn't giving me $1500 worth of satisfaction.

Put an IPS display on it, and it would be the best 15" currently on the market, IMHO, but Samsung hasn't seen fit to do that.

I appreciate your indecisiveness, :) I agree, the screen is the only real drawback to the Z5C, and it is very unfortunate they didn't decide to refresh it along with Ivy Bridge / Kepler upgrades. I guess I have to look into the Asus N56VZ-DS71 or the NP700Z7C-S03US, both of which have excellent screens, speakers but are not as compact, light, or affordable as the Z5C..

I'm still at work so I haven't even opened it yet :(

I've used many laptops but I've never used a Samsung before...

Is the screen really that bad? I've used Alienware m14x, Dell XPS 15z, Dell XPS 14z, and MacBook Pro/Air.

Is the Samsung comparable to those? The Dell XPS 14z has the worst screen ever...

The MacBook Air was perfect. I loved that one the most. The Alienware m14x and Dell XPS 15z were okay but not terrible. The Dell XPS 14z was just crap x100...
