Thanks for the link.
That definitely makes my Dell E6400 look overweight!
However, why no WXGA+? Samsung do make them and Dell uses them (but reported to not be as good as the LG alternative).
Somewhere I had said that I thought Samsung were pulling out of the premium end of the market in favour of volume sales, but the X360 and X460 hasn't, after all, forgotten its notebook roots with models such as the X1. Models such as these would provide a good entry point into North America.

I see alot of numbers but no price. Any word officially? And where can I get one?

LAPTOP Magazine have just posted a review of the X460-44P on their website ...
-
Interesting review, thanks.
Do all X460 have this red thing on the lid?

I've seen pictures of a black lid too.

I'm choosing beween samsung x460, dell m4200 and dell e6400.
what would you recommend to buy?
is samsung good? -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
I've owned several Samsung notebooks and the quality is good. The X series are their premium range and should be above average.
The light weight of the X460 is its outstanding feature in comparison with the Dells. It is about 0.4kg / 0.9lb lighter than my E6400 (Intel GPU + 6 cell battery). The Dells feel very solid, but I have an older Samsung X60plus and that is also very solid while a class-leading 2.5kg weight.
Features that my E6400 has, but the X460 does not offer, are the WXGA+ display, eSATA port and backlit keyboard. The lack of WXGA+ on the X460 is its main drawback.
You need to decide whether you want WXGA+ option or the lower weight. If you want WXGA and the lowest weight then the X460 is the obvious choice.

Thanks John
also considering that x460 has ddr3 and discrete gpu, it makes x460 very good laptop.
need only to consider WXGA now, -
I also think the X460 has a more sexy design, but that's subjective of course. -

I am very interested in the x460 as a replacement to my 2 year old Gateway E100M. This laptop just has looks AND function. I'd buy one right now if they were available in brushed black. I'd get the x360 but I'm tired of not having a built in DVD drive. I'll be interested to see what people have to say about it once they get it in hand!
-
It is not matt, the video card is weak.
Not that good. -
I just recieved my X460 yesterday, overall I do like it (I was also strongly considering the Dell XPS M1330) After having hands on time with each (my son has an M1330) I feel they are a very comparable systems with some give and take (tray vs slot load DVD, X460 has a few extra features, higher res cam, slightly larger screen, hdmi) M1330 has configuration options including faster processor, etc. and is generaly a couple of hundred dollars cheaper and feels more sturdy (less screen flex anyway). Now to answer some of the questions I have seen asked, the screen is by far the brightest notebook screen I have seen, however the black levels do turn a bit gray if the brightness if cranked up (I have not tried it outside in daylight yet as it has been overcast, but I suspect it would be at least somewhat useable). Now for my one BIG gripe, the black glossy finish, I have read the reviews talking about how it attracts finger prints, THIS IS AN UNDERSTATEMEMT. As soon as you touch the black part of the case handprints show up so obviously that they can be seen across the room, I can think of no surface to compare this to (glass doors, mirrors, this is far worse as the handprints appear as milky white on black). Samsung is at least nice enough to include a screen wipe towel that can be used to remove the worst of the handprints that occur unboxing the X460, although even wiping with this towel traces of the handprints remain.

Those people that decides for these designs up there must have some braindamage.
Do they even can think properly?
HEY LOOK AT ME AND MY BLING BLING.
Glossy body, glossy screen.
Now it only lacks a blinking LED. -
It has a blinking blue LED (when the cover is closed in suspend mode the front blue LED blinks slowly)
Ike -
that was an exaggeration to describe my thoughts towards this trend.
i mean, this X460 is a business book, then make it one and not with bling-bling-style. -
The P460 is the business version.
X360 and X460 are bling bling versions -
ah, ok.
but then i don't understand what clientel this notebooks wants to aim at.
I mean, for gaming the 9200GS is too weak, for outdoor use it has glare, so no.
hm......
It's a pity. Perhaps they should have tried to install a 9600GT in it >
Then it would be somewhat a competitor to the LG P310. -
I think it aims at Macbook Air/Macbook/Sony like clientele.
The glare isn't a problem as long as the backlight is bright enough. I'm pretty sure it will be very bright.
I've worked with Macbook Air and Sony TZ, SZ outside in sunlight, no problem. All have glossy screens with bright LED backlights. -
Hi all!
I also buy one yesterday, as far i can tell with only 1 day of use:
Screen has a really great bright, but suffer from noticeable blackligth.
Speeakers, are really bad, but in the same line of others laptops.
Webcam... not so good when movement, but still usefull.
The trackpad (with gestures) and Keyboard are the best i haved tried ever.
Also, it seem a very solid desing, very vaio style, and very cool, only get a bit warmer in the left side.
In daylight, there are glare, of course, but still usable setting the maximun bright.
Another interesting thing, is that samsung provide with all the necesary drivers for win xp (i will "downgrade" as soon as i can)
I'm very happy with it for the moment, its more o less all i wanted, a small laptop to carry arround, very ligth and with good battery
(arround 4h in normal using, installing applications and surfing, with the "samsung optimized" power plan). -
We've got one of these in the office at the moment, so expect a review some time soon. Looks pretty good, but as noted above, like the X360 it does seem to have a bit of an identity crisis and the sooner Samsung ditches all this glossy plastic the better.
-
@Philflow:
ok, this is correct, as long as the screen is bright enough (i guess about 250cd/m²+) , but at cost of battery life
also, if it's aimed at the clientel like the macbooks, i even can't understand the more why the just don't use the 9400 Nvidia chipset. -
@ EAPOCS Yes it's not good for the battery life I agree.
-
Gotta say, this is one great laptop. My only complaint so far is the darn thing is an oily finger print magnet! I have resorted to carrying around a Radtech screen / keyboard protector cloth. It works great for removing the smudges. Sigh...guess you can't have everything...the beauty is hidden beneath the shiny skin.

PCMag seems to like the X460 a lot

Hey! we had our first Samsung come through the lab the other day. The X460-44P is incredible. unbelievable light, sexy looking, well built and will surely drive new fierce competition for both Sony & ASUS. We installed an Intel X25M 80GB SSD in it and that thing just screams! Definitely on my list for Santa!

Another review done by Notebookjournal this time. They measured a brightness of a whopping 370 cd/m. Unfortunately the contrast is the lowest I've ever seen: 78,00:1 at 100 cd/m.

It could be like my E6400 on which the display washes out at full brightness.
However, the only time I need full brightness is if i am outside. Normally I have the display on about half brightness, where the contrast is much better.
John -
Judging by the low contrast rate at 100 cd/m brightness I'm expecting it uses a Samsung panel.
If I remember correctly your E6400 has an LG panel. -
The display does tend to wash out at the top 2-3 brightest levels, they are also uncomfortably bright to look at indoors. I was wondering do any of you other X460 owners also have the problem of constantly bumping the DVD eject button, it is located in the middle of the right side near the balance point for lifting the computer with one hand?
Ike -
Ike, I have not had a problem with the DVD eject button. And as for the display I think it is wonderful! Running on battery I can toggle it down two or three steps and it is just perfect. On AC I tend to just drop it one step and no problem. This suker is fast too!

@Kiwibru: What battery run time are you getting?
John -
I just bought the new macbook pro but I feel it is a bit big for my taste and I prefer Windows 7 over Leopard. However, I love its multi-touch trackpad, built-in speakers are very good, garage band is so sweet, iWeb is very easy to use, iWork 08 is fun and has some great looking templates, overall the laptop is very solid. After all, I feel more like home when I use Windows and sure I will miss my mac.
Does the X460 support multi-touch gestures, like two fingers to scroll a webpage? How is the viewing angles? I like to put the laptop on my lap while laying in bed so wide vertical viewing angle is important.
For those who bought the X460, will you buy it again or will you consider something else? I am thinking of selling my macbook pro and buy the X460 or something else.
Please let me know -

The X460 review is now posted at Trusted Reviews. Read on.
John -
Price differences with Holland are staggering. Dabs: 918 GBP (1025 euros), Netherlands 1350 euros. I wonder why this is.
-
The vertical viewing angles are similar to the rest of 13.3 - 14.1" laptops, wich is worse than 15.4" like the mbp.
At least, you can open the screen almost 180º to compensate that.
The speekers, like the review said, are not fit for music.
And after a couple of weeks of use, i have no doubts i will buy it again, it has everething i wish, light, very good battery, reasonable screen size and enough firepower for my needs. -
-
true, i was refering to the "stock" driver.
-
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
The User Guide will explain what gestures are available with the Samsung driver. You can download it from the Samsung website (but be forewarned that it is an enormous multi-language installation file).
John -
Thinking about buying one of these. How is the 9200 GS for gaming vs some laptops with the 9300 GS?
If your just watching DVD's about how much battery life do you get?
And is 1280 x 800 really a problem with that screen? That seems to be most of the reviewers complaint.
Also how are the speakers? -
Red_Dragon Notebook Nobel Laureate
this notebook i hope will soon have the updated intergrated nvidia 9400
-
John, Battery life seems to run just under 3 hours if I am just doing documents.
Have not run it with a DVD yet but my bet is that will reduce the run time to just over 2 hours. -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
That's not impressive and seems to be worse than a Dell E6400 with nVidia GPU. How bright is your display? This can take a lot of power at high brightness.
John -
Speakers are BAD, it is probably the biggest problem with the X460, they are worse than any in my last 4-5 notebooks (Compaq, Delll, Toshiba), not fit for music, barely acceptable for movies / tv shows. Even my old Compaq M300 ultra portable with one speaker on the bottom sounds better.
-
Does anybody know how to set the 'silent mode' as default? it would prefer it to be automatically set after vista has booted. You can set it manually by pressing FN+F8.
Another issue for me is that I can't find a way to activate the 'silent mode' under ubuntu/linux. FN+F8 doesn't work here. At least not with an out of the box ubuntu 8.10.
Help would be very much appreciated. -
