    Hello there

I got my X60 about 2 weeks ago now and i am very pleased indeed. I hadn't attempted until yesterday, (about 30 minutes before a deadline) to burn anything using the drive.

I wanted to burn an .avi file for work so i copied it to the D:\ drive. (I hadnt installed any better burning software yet). I thin inserted a blank DVD-r and everything went tits up. It hung and froze for about 5 minutes. I havent had chance to try a + yet. When i bought it I was under the impression that it would burn + and - discs.

Am i completely wrong. Has anyone else had any experience of this.

Please help, as i dont know whether i have a fualty drive or not.

    Many thanks

    Jamie

I've had no problems burning both +R and -R on my X60. I haven't yet tried +R DL.

My burner is a Teac DV-W28EA and I use Nero 7 premium. I have found that the Teac burner is very well behaved.

I would suggest that you try to use an up-to-date burning software or check for updates to whatever burning software comes with the X60 (what is it?). I would recommend Nero. For many years I used the Adaptec / Roxio CD Creator but last year, when I got my Asus W3A and installed CD Creator, it produced lots of coasters. I phoned the supplier and was advised to use the supplied software (Nero). No more coasters and I am now a firm supporter of Nero.

Having said all that, I have distant memories of the hanging problem that you have described. Reboot and try again.

    Hope this helps,

    John

    Thanks for that John,

its always good to hear from other X60 users. How did you find out that your drive was a teac. Does it say in control-panel/system/device manager. I will look when i get home from work tonight.

By the way, on a different matter, what do you use to clean your screen. My flat is quite dusty and the screen is already covered in it.

    Many thanks

    Jamie

    1. Yes, Device Manager will give the model of the optical drive. If you want to delve deeper into the general hardware details, then I recommend SiSoftware Sandra. The Nero InfoTool is an alternative for more details of the optical drive properties and the details of any optical disc (but I don't know if it is free).

    2. The glossy screens are very easy to clean. First wipe off any dust with a dry cloth and then use a damp cloth with a hint of liquid detergent or cheap shampoo to clean off any marks or fingerprints. While you are at it, use the same damp cloth to clean the rest of the computer.

    Hope this helps,

    John

This may sound like common sense, but I use a feather duster, effective & cheap, & no hard contact with screen.

Microfiber cloth works very well too, as it doesn't scratch and picks up dirt and smudges.

Although it's already a rarely possibility, some burners don't support some disks. I think of my X20, which burns some old Memorex DVD-R at 4x speed instead of 8x. As I know, there exists completely incompatible discs for nearly every burner. Maybe that''s here the problem too - I would try another, different, DVD-R to make sure.

I use and recommend one-time glasses cloth (are they that called?) which you can buy at every supermarket or drugstore. They are just perfectly wet and clean the display very well.
