    Hi,

I'm looking for advice on some weird screen issues I've been having with my series 7 laptop. Most of the time, there are multiple coloured horizontal lines across the screen (occupying just around one inch vertically). Also, the top half of the screen is occasionally reflected on the bottom half. Both issues started at the same time.

While I do not recall physically damaging the laptop, I'm not 100% certain because most people with similar issues state some sort of physical damage. I highly doubt it's an issue with my video card (which also seems to be a common cause) considering I haven't really used graphics intensive applications or played games.

I am still under warranty, but I was wondering if there was anything I could try myself at home first.

I've read that similar issues can sometimes be resolved by reseating the ribbon cable. Is this possible and something I should try? Will doing this void my warranty? Is there anything else I might try before contacting Samsung?

    Thanks in advance.

My immediate thought is that it's a connection problem - these affect whole rows or columns on the display. Sometimes moving the display backwards or forwards will temporarily fix the problem because it moves the cable which passes through one of the hinges and remakes a connection.

If you ask Samsung, opening your computer will void the warranty. However, if you open the computer carefully and do no damage then Samsung won't know you have been inside. The guide here probably applies. I would not recommend trying to open the display.

Personally, I consider this to be fixable under warranty and recommend you contact Samsung support. It may help if you have photographs available to send them.

Thanks for the advice. Ideally, I'd just send it in for repairs, but I need the laptop for work and sending it in for a couple of weeks would be very disruptive.

However, based on the link you provided, reseating the ribbon cable seems rather complicated. Is there no other way to access the cable without taking the screen out?

You can check where the screen cable connects to the main board by removing the base. However, checking where the cable connects to the display means pulling the screen apart and, if I remember correctly, the bezel is glued so it needs to be replaced after removal.

Depending where you are and whether the Samsung service centre has the right parts in stock then the time the computer is away from you can be as little as 3 days.

Well I guess that rules out reseating the cable. At least before contacting Samsung.

Btw, there is no noticeable effect when I tilt the screen back and forth.
