    Greetings,

I've been relatively problem free for the last couple of months on my samsung series 9, but now my right touchpad button does not have a snappy click anymore. It feel very rigid and I can press it, but it will stay pressed down and will release slowly in a timespan of about 10 seconds thereafter. When I try to slide the touchpad up with using some force, the touchpad works fine, though only for about a minute.

Anyone else has had this problem? Is there a way to remove the touchpad and maybe clean it? But normally It shouldn't be dirty, as I've used a mouse and external keyboard (which covered the touchpad) during the last couple of months.

Are you still in warranty? I suspect a complete new keyboard / palmrest / touchpad unit may be needed to fix the problem properly.

However, if you are suitably inclined, you could first take a look at the underside of the touchpad. Remove the 10 screws from the bottom of the computer using a good quality Philips size 0 screwdriver then take the base off (the only fiddly bit is releasing the plastic clips between the hinges - easiest done when rotating the base through about 30 degrees). Then unscrew and remove the battery to get to the bottom of the pad.

New keyboard / palmrest / touchpad unit for what seems to be a small problem? Hmm I may need to think about that, I don't like sending my stuff in for repair. Might try to fix it myself then. Thanks for the reply!.

Oh, small question, is the glass connected to the laptop with some sort of adhesive? It sure seems that way.

By "glass" I presume you mean the touchpad surface. I think it is all bonded together on the older Series 9s. Hence the likelihood that if you can't fix it from below then you will need a complete new top unit.

Ha, but I don't know if I got an older version. I have the new series 9 with windows 8, but only the HD version, not the full HD version.

By "older" I meant anything except very new. The pad surface on my Book 9 Lite only seems to be fixed along the back edge nearest the keyboard. I don't know whether that is just a cost-saving measure for the Lite model or is typical of current production.

I have exactly the same problem - the right touchpad button sticks down, releasing over a few seconds. I also use a mouse most of the time, so while it's not great it hasn't really bothered me until a long-haul flight last week....

It's still under warranty so I took it into the local service centre (which co-incidentally is in Shrivenham!), who've just called up and advised that it's 'physical damage' and that the trackpad is bent. I am unimpressed to say the least, so will try talking this through with Samsung but am prepared to pay the repair and then take it to small claims court...

I wouldn't buy that argument unless there's obvious external physical damage. "Sale of Goods Act" and "Fitness for Purpose" are two phrases that come to mind. It's not as if the User Guide contains a warning to press the pad lightly.

I would expect that the repair will involve a complete new keyboard / touchpad / keyboard surround unit. Perhaps £150 plus labour. So worth arguing about. Take it up with Samsung support. They need to issue to authorisation to the service agent to do the repair at Samsung's expense. Hopefully Samsung will be more amenable to keeping the customer satisfied.

Cost quoted by Valutech was GBP130.... but Samsung were utterly un-amenable (if that is a word) to keeping the customer satisfied. 'if the service centre say that it's physical damage then that's that'. On top of which, I had been advised when I first called the warranty line that if it was classified as physical damage or liquid ingress I would have to pay the repair, but that if I didn't choose to go ahead there would be no charge, but Valutech wanted GBP30 as an inspection fee before they would release the laptop. The Samsung 'customer care' line agreed with the warranty team that I shouldn't have to pay, but in the same sentence confirmed that Valutech could charge me!

Does anyone have the name and address (physical or electronic) of the MD of Samsung UK to hand? I would like to write him/her a strongly worded letter to give them a chance to reconsider before I go down the small claims route.

    Grrrrrrr

Mine has exactly the same problem, really annoying given its only a few months old. I've got an even bigger problem now though and that's that my graphics card seems to be having issues, screen corruption and flashing colours like some sort of test pattern. Have no other option but to hard reset it and wait ~15 minutes before restarting. Almost seems like the fans have stopped working on battery since upgrading to windows 8.1.

It's time to check the temperatures. Is something getting too hot?

Use the Sensors tab of HWiNFO.

There are several reports of the new touchpad driver lacking the gesture support. Do you a previous driver on you computer that you can reinstall.?

The other topic being this (for anyone else who comes here).

Doesn't the standard touchpad menu offer two finger tap = pop-up menu?

I'm keeping away from Windows 8.1 until it's been debugged. I had a big enough problem a few days ago with a BIOS update.
