I've tried to lower the brightness with easy settings Fn+F2, but it doesn't go very dim.
I've also tried within "power options".."screen brightness" which is the same thing. So still too bright even at lowest setting.

    What are my options?

Use the BIOS update program (see here) to check for a newer BIOS.The overall brightness range is usually coded into the BIOS and can changed through a BIOS update, if there is one (and Samsung realised that it needed fixing). I would, however, note that Samsung don't tend to use the near-darkness minimum brightness settings offered by some other manufacturers.

I updated its unimpressive BIOS recently. (unimpressive- it doesn't display cpu temp in the bios, and booting off usb was very hidden-hint- one must disable fast boot and restart for option to appear within 3 layers, and it might lack an F10/F10 type boot menu too).

Anyhow, updating the BIOS didn't let it go any dimmer.

    Lowest setting is rather bright.

Out of interest, which manufacturers offer "near darkness"? I've never seen that.

I've yet to use a notebook that shows the CPU temperature in the BIOS. You can check if your Series 3 uses Esc to get to a one-time boot menu.

Minimum brightness on my Series 9 is equivalent to about 3 steps up on the Lenovo T420s.

OK but you said some manufacturers offer near darkness. I've never seen that. I am asking which?

I was thinking of the T420s where the minimum brightness is unusable except in total darkness.
