    Hello all,

I was wondering if it's possible to connect the Series 7 NP700Z5A-S01UK with a Dell U2412m monitor Dell UltraSharp U2412M 24-inch Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor : Computer Components | Dell?

The monitor doesn't have a HDMI input but it has DVI, DisplayPort and VGA.
VGA aside, If I connected the laptop's HDMI output via an adapter to monitor's DVI input could I use the full 1920x1200 16:10 resolution or would I be limited to 1920 x 1080
    Anyone done this?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

    Leo.

I can almost guarantee you that it will work fine. I frequently use my NP700Z3A (same model and generation as yours, but smaller screen and less CPU/GPU power) with an HP L2335, 23" 1920x1200 LCD. I connect using an HDMI-DVI cable, but you could also use an adapter.

I also tested the same monitor using the Sammy's mini-VGA port (and VGA dongle) and that works fine too -- but of course picture quality is far better with HDMI.

Update: A mistake people often make when connecting external monitors is to accept the default Duplicate settings -- which will limit resolution on the external monitor to that of the laptop's LCD. You have to use the Extend setting (or Second screen only) in order to use the full resolution of the external monitor. I apologize if you already knew this. Maybe it will help others

I'm not going to contradict what our learned friend Dannemand has to say, seeing his is one of the most knowledgeable guys in these forums. But I for one would be interested to see if you can get the full 1920x1200 16:10 resolution seeing that your laptop has only a 1600 x 900 resolution running off a 2nd gen i7 CPU.

If you do connect to this screen can you post back to see how you went.

    LOL

A little healthy skepticism is always, well, healthy :D

Trust me, the resolution of the laptop's internal LCD has no bearing on the max resolution supported on an external HDMI. When I get back to my office, I'll hook it up and make a screendump of the settings to show. Again, my NP700Z3A is 1600x900 as well (and almost identical in other ways too to the OP's NP700Z5A).

Update: This is Windows Screen Resolution dialog, where the Multiple displays option chooses how you want to use the external display. (You can also use Fn-F4 on the Sammy to cycle through the different options).

In order to achieve full native resolution on the external display, you have to select either (A) Extend these display as I did here (creating one big desktop area spanning multiple monitors, you drag them around to place them relative to each other); or (B) Show desktop only on 2 (making the external monitor the only display).

    Hi there,

Dannemand, thanks for the comprehensive replies, I was just double checking before purchasing, I don't actually have the monitor but I think you're right so I've just ordered one
HerEsY I will indeed post back once it arrives and I set it up.

    Thanks,

    Leo.

@ Dannemand, if your 1600 x 900 res, gets 1920 x 1200 res extended, what should I except from my 1366 x 768 res to extend to. I'm getting 1920 x 1080 extended on my Samsung syncMaster HDMI to DVI now.

In a meeting now, so this will be brief: You should get whatever native resolution of the external monitor (up to the max supported by the graphics card) -- regardless of the resolution of your internal LCD.

1920x1080 is probably the native resolution of your SyncMaster. Lots of monitors have that resolution.

    Hi guys,

Just to confirm, the monitor arrived and all is working fine - extended desktop with 1920 x 1200 resolution, via a HDMI to DVI cable.

    It looks great!

    Thanks for the replies,

    Leo.

Would you mind sharing the link where you got your micro usb to dvi cable? I'm currently on the same dilemma using a series 9 to be hooked up to a 2412m

    Edit:

I bought this one and am waiting for it to arrive, will it work? https://www.amazon.com/gp/css/order-history/ref=nav_youraccount_orders

That link goes to your Amazon account (for which only you have the username/password). I suggest you Edit the post and correct the link.

HDMI-DVI cables are simple: It's the same signal, no conversion, just a different connector. So pretty much any cable should work. I normally get such items from Monoprice which have great quality at rock bottom prices.
