So this is actually weird. I realized I was wrong – the Photos app is XAML-based. So basically my list is exactly the opposite. I get bouncing for all the apps you don't and vice versa. Elan is doing some funny stuff here – hope they eventually get out a driver that enables Precision mode for all apps.

I wonder whether the Gesture Effect setting is significant.

    Elan Pad Gesture Effect.jpg

You can find that setting in the ETDAniConf.exe touchpad control panel which is in the installation package. This control panel has some different options to Samsung's default ETDSimpleUI_Win8.exe.

    You are good!

When switching to "Microsoft modern touchpad experience" the magic is gone. No bounce and more important no smooth zoom and scroll

I guess the "ZoomPerfect" setting enables Precision Touchpad for HTML-based WinRT apps and "Microsoft modern touchpad experience" for XAML-based ones then, judging from this comment? Could you try it out and see with which apps you get bouncy scrolling with either of these settings?

@ebec: Not even in the apps that you listed as without bouncy scrolling before?

After the elan pad driver update, the virtual keyboard tool bar has popped up near the system tray on the task bar.
if i remove it using the properties menu -> tool bars, it will reappear again next time i start my pc.
Does anyone know how to get rid of it? somehow it bothers me :)

This unwanted icon has also appeared on my NP900X4C.

A little research reveals that the following should fix it properly:

Administrative Tools > component Services > Services (Local) > Touchkeyboard and Handwriting Service > Right Click > Properties > Startup Type. Change this to Disabled.

In theory this should stop the service from starting (it will take a little time for me to be 100% sure since the keyboard didn't appear on my computer immediately after reboot).

Does your notebook have a touchscreen? Mine doesn't and the icon hasn't reappeared after a reboot some hours ago. If you have a touchscreen then maybe something is reactivating the service.

You should be able to cripple it by first stopping the service and then renaming the file "TabSvc.dll" in the system32 folder to "TabSvc.dl".

    No, it's not touchscreen. It's a np730u3e-s03it.
TabletInputService is shown to be stopped in the task manager.

I've just rebooted the pc and this time the icon hasn't pop up.
I'll monitor the situation for a while.

    Thanks again

    Latency issues related to Wi-Fi
I discovered that I have a latency problem when I run on battery. When I transfer big files from my stationary pc, my touchpad gets jumpy and it gets difficult to control the mouse. First, I thought it was radio interference but after opening “DPC Latency Checker” I think it is the infamous Intel Wi-Fi drivers. (See the screenshot).I do not have connection problems otherwise. Note that it only looks like this when transferring data at high speed. When not transferring files or the power cord is connected, I do not feel any lag and the latency looks much better.

I run windows 8.1 with the latest Intel drivers 16.6.0_De164. The problem was there with some older 15.XX drivers also. When I think back, I am certain I had the same problem on windows 8 as well.

Our accumulated wisdom about the latency problems on Samsung notebooks is in http://forum.notebookreview.com/samsung/688064-how-reduce-latencies-samsung-laptops.html. You may get a better response if you put your observations there.

Samsungparts.com is usually a good source of part numbers, but on this occasion I can't see the display listed.

Some of the thinner notebook displays are sold as complete lid units with the panel and bezel glued in place. Others use a glued bezel (so you need to find a replacement) but the panel is replaceable.

Next time use the standalone BIOS Update program (link in first post in this thread).

If you download the new BIOS then run it (as administrator) the updating is done outside of Windows and you can watch the progress status.

There's a program called Moninfo which gets the panel ID.

However, you also need to be sure about the connector type and there may be other obstacles as well.

I've lost the charging adaptor of my Samsung NP740U3E-K01UB Laptop. Can anyone with the same laptop please let me know the part number of the charging adaptor?

What would be a good place to buy the replacement adaptor online? I see there are many aftermarket adaptors on eBay but not sure if they would actually fit the ATIV Book 7.

See Samsung's web page for this model. It shows three different parts: AA-PA1N90W/US, AA-PA3NC90/US and AA-PA3NS90/US.

You can get much better value for money by buying a third party PSU. Amazon may be a better choice than ebay because you can check the reviews. Alternatively, there are specialist third party PSU suppliers with their own websites. I would suggest that you look for something with an L-shaped plug rather than a straight one. I find the L-shape more convenient when the socket is as the back of side of the computer because the cable then runs towards the back.

I would wait for SW Update.

I've read elsewhere in this forum (probably this thread) about the Windows Update version of the AMD driver causing problems. (The Intel and AMD drivers need to be customised to work properly together).

    John

PS: This post indicates that you should avoid the windows Update AMD driver.

Quick update with my Samsung NP740 after I had issues with my screen developing blemishes ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/samsung/703480-series-7-ultra-np730u3e-np740u3e-amd-hd-8570m-optional-4g-lte-86.html#post9422124

Took the laptop back to the store who confirmed the fault and organised a replacement screen to be fitted. Can't fault the service except that it took just over 1 month to get it back to me.

Now on with the next problem.
As of the Dec 27th, the audio has no ceased to work on this laptop. Except 1 or 2 pops / crackles when I first try to test the sound on power on. After its done it once, it wont crackle again until its been powered off again.
Theres no sound from either the speakers or when I plug in headphones despite windows confirming that the soundcard is there and "working normally".

This fault actually started right in front of me whilst I was playing around with the Internet Archive's in-brower MESS emulator (i.e. I didn't power it on one day to find the audio had stopped working) - not that I think that MESS could have caused this. I'm absolutely dumbfounded what could have happened though.

    Attempted solutions so far:
Ensured that none the sound settings are at "mute"
Ensured that none of the audio devices are disabled
Ensured there are no device conflicts in Device Manager.
Plugged headphones into the jack and still no sound through there either.
Checked sample rate & bit depth are set to default
Removed, rebooted & reinstalled latest Realtek Drivers
Booted from Fedora and Ubuntu Live CDs to test audio - same problem in Linux.
Opened the bottom of the case to check for any obvious damage (none found) and that the speakers are plugged in correctly.

The only thing I haven't tried is to test audio via HDMI (I might to that tonight).
I'll be calling the store again tomorrow evening to submit it for ANOTHER repair... like I said in my last post - I really like this laptop but mine seems to be plagued with problems :(

Hey guys! I found great deal on this Samsung NP730U3E laptop (with HD 8570M and 6gb ram) and gonna recieve it in next few days. I've been scanning this forum for a while now but haven't foundt confirmation if it's already safe (and smart) to upgrade to windows 8.1? Has the driver issue already been solved with HD 8570M and windows 8.1?

Many people have upgraded, with various degrees of success and pain - including some successfully. The AMD switchable graphics is definitely among the issues causing the most trouble. Check the Win8.1 sticky thread (if you haven't already). I tried to summarize status there a few days ago. Also check the 2013 Series 7 / Ativ Book 8 Owners Lounge for extensive coverage.

    Hello everyone.
I am not good with laptops and i've read some info about replacing RAM modules in np730u3 but maybe something has change. First of all i want to make sure about that fact that only one module can be replaced, yea ?? Also, now, when 8gb RAM is not so expensive is it a good idea to change 1 module to 8 gb or it wont make a difference because they will stop working in dual chanel or something ??

Some versions of this notebook use Intel graphics and have two RAM slots. However, most have AMD graphics and only one RAM slot. You can check the hardware details using a program such as HWiNFO.

Whether more RAM will give any noticeable benefit will depend on whether you are using nearly all your present RAM and windows is dumping RAM contents into virtual memory. Task Manager will show you this information.

Not running in full dual channel mode is not a worry with modern computers: The memory bandwidth may be reduced by about 10% but the impact of this is far less than the use of virtual memory.

Thank you for your fast response. I checked the graphics card and i have AMD so 1 slot it is. I will see for the next few weeks if im using nearly all od my present RAM and then think about should I buy more ram or not. Thanks once again ^^

Hi, I am getting ready to replace my 128gb ssd with a 500GB ssd in my NP740U3E-K01UB. I know there were some posts about this somewhere buried deep in this thread. But I am wondering, If I have an external USB DVD player and my own copy of Windows 8... Do I need to do any special partitions or anything? I don't need any special Samsung partition for recovery, so is there anything else I have to do?

I have never installed an OS on an SSD so I have no idea if it is just the same as installing it on a non ssd drive.

    Thanks for any help.

That should be easy enough if you install on a blank new SSD. Your computer came pre-installed in UEFI mode, and a blank disk is what you need if you want the new installation to be UEFI as well (see here for descriptions of UEFI).

If you install the same version of Win8 as the pre-installed one, it should pick up the Product Key in BIOS. Otherwise see John's post here on how to extract the key -- before you swap the drives!

After swapping the drives, change the following BIOS settings (F2) in order to boot the DVD:

Fast Boot/Fast BIOS=disabled (can be changed back after installation)
SecureBoot=disabled (can be changed back after installation)
    OS Mode Selection=UEFI OS

Select the USB DVD drive in Boot Priority or Press F10 at startup to temporarily select it as boot device.

Once Windows Setup is running, make sure the SSD is blank (no partitions). It should create the following partitions as part of the installation:

Windows RE tools (Windows Recovery, NOT Samsung Recovery)
ESP (EFI System Partition - boot)
MSR (Microsoft Reserved and BitLocker encryption)
    Windows (Primary Windows partition)

Once Windows is up and running, you can create a Data partition in any leftover unallocated space.

If it won't boot your DVD, you may have to select OS Mode Selection=UEFI & CSM OS under SecureBoot. And if so, you may also have to force the SSD to GPT format in order to get a UEFI installation. Press Shift-F10 in Setup to open a command prompt and use the following commands:

DISKPART (to start the Disk Partition manager)
LIST DISK (to show all your disks. Notice which one is your SSD)
SELECT DISK 0 (assuming 0 was the number of your SSD)
DETAIL DISK (just to verify that you selected the right disk)
    CLEAN (to wipe the disk)
CONVERT GPT (to convert the disk from MBR to GPT)
    EXIT (to close DISKPART)
    EXIT (to close Command Prompt)

You may have to restart after this in order for BIOS (UEFI) to detect the newly converted GPT drive.

As for drivers, use SW Update to download most (but not all). This post has guidance and a download link for SW Update. A few things may be different on your model, depending on whether you have discrete AMD etc.

There is a more detailed WIndows install guide here, covering many different Samsung models and more details on drivers. But it assumes you want a non-UEFI installations (BIOS/MBR), including downgrades from Win8 to Win7.

Will you want to use Samsung Recovery Solution? If you do, then SRS 6 includes a copy disk utility which will clone your old SSD onto the new one (you will need a USB adapter for the new SSD to do this). If you don't plan to use SRS then just let Windows do what it wants. Don't reformat the old SSD so you can always put it back and use SRS to restore the factory image should you want to dispose of the computer.

However, before doing a Windows clean install first use SW Update to export all the drivers and software onto a flash drive (but get the WiFi driver from Intel). These are then to hand to install once the basic windows installation has finished.

    John

One minute apart, what are the odds of that? Yet it seems to happen quite often, though usually with your post first.

@steveninspokane: Yes, unless you know you want a clean install, definitely consider the Recovery features: Either Copy Disk (requires an Adapter) or Factory Image Backup with Create Boot Disk enabled (requires a 16 or 32GB USB stick, depending on model, but works as a standalone bootable Recovery).

First, awesome posts for both of you guys. Thanks.

Ok, so John brought up something i might be interested in, and that is just cloning my drive. It sure would save a lot of trouble of reinstalling everything. I do have a 32GB flash, and also a USB adapter I've used for hdds pretty sure it will work on sdd also.

If there a tutorial or guide I can use to help me along with the cloning process? And where can I get srs6?

Again, thanks so much for the help. :)

No problem. Much better when you ask and get it right from the beginning!

SRS6 is Samsung Recovery Solution 6, the software on your Recovery partition. You get to it by pressing F4 at boot -- or run the Samsung Recovery Solution Windows app (installed from factory and offered in SW Update) which relies on the software on the Recovery partition. My last post (the response to John) has links is to Samsung's own Recovery user guide.

    These are your options:

    1) Clean install will give you the leanest and fastest installation, but it can be more work, particularly the first time. Many owners prefer it though (when they have install media) because they like to be in control. I am like that myself -- although it's not always what I recommend others, depending on their experience.

    2) Copy Disk will preserve and clone everything on your current SSD, your current Windows installation (programs, malware, bloat), Data and Recovery. It's really quite straightforward. This post elaborates a bit more. Since you're cloning a small drive to a larger it will fit no problem, and you can expand the size of partitions after cloning. If you keep the original SSD safe, you can delete the Recovery partitions to free up space. However, read this post for a prudent alternative.

    3) Use the guide in this post to re-image the new SSD using a Bootable Factory Image Backup on a 32GB USB stick. It is a great tool to have because it's a standalone Recovery that lets you re-image the drive to factory state no matter how messed up it becomes. No need to have Recovery on the new drive (you can delete the partitions after re-imaging the drive, assuming you keep the stick). The downside is you get a Samsung installation with bloat. It's not too bad though, this post has some cleanout advice, including links to a bloatware list.

Finally, this post has some suggestions for further trimming space on an SSD.

Let us know how it goes.

If you prefer the direct cloning (which means you can transfer your complete working software installation) then you will need either one of these or one of these in a 2.5" USB enclosure. This is my preferred method unless I want to build a clean Windows installation from scratch.

If you buy a Samsung SSD then another option is to use Samsung's free data migration tool. i haven't tried it.

You won't be the first to make that mistake.

There is some difference difference in the SSD size as demonstrated by the first photo here. Unfortunately, the mSATA EVO SSDs currently have a price premium compared to the 2.5" versions because they have only been on sale for a few weeks.

This mobiletechreview shows what's inside your notebook (although there will be some difference if you have a version with a separate GPU).

Well I got the right sdd. But Windows 8 is killing me. No matter what I try.

I try installing from a dvd with an external USB DVD Drive, but it says it can't verify my product key. I have tried 3 Keys, the original from my samsung, and 2 different ones from my MSDN accnt. None of them work and there is no way to press "Skip".

So then, I made a bootable flashdrive with Win 8 on it... and this laptop wouldn't even acknowledge that I have a USB inserted.

Honestly, this is why I have grown to hate computers, back in the day things worked or had an easy fix, nowadays it just seems to be hoop after hoop.

In BIOS settings, disable Fast Boot/Fast BIOS, that should allow USB boot.

If Windows won't accept your product keys, just call Microsoft. Others have reported good response with such issues.

I am not sure which thing worked, but after using 3 different USB drives and changing the setting in BIOS to " UEFI & CSM OS " something worked and I am now installing Win8. I had to add a fine lines of code and that made it so I didn't have to enter a pKey...

I am sure I can figure out how to add the key later. Thanks again for your help.[SUB] :)[/SUB]

I should have mentioned that: When in UEFI mode, you have to install either from DVD or a FAT32-formatted USB. UEFI doesn't support booting from NTFS (which your USB probably is). By choosing UEFI & CSM OS you allowed it to boot it after all.

Just a little update, after all the hoops I had to jump through, I was finally able to preform a clean install. Then used SWupdate to install all my drivers.

Thanks again Dannemand & John Ratsey for all your really helpful advice. :)
