Within weeks of buying my Series 9 the shiny keyboard surround had cracked in the bottom left corner. I know another owner with the same crack in the exact same place.

The point the crack originated from is actually hollow underneath, so its easy to see why it cracked here on both laptops.

Does anyone else have this problem?

    -- Edit --

Sorry, should have said, this is a series 9, 900X laptop, specifically the 900X3A

That sucks. My 2011 SS9 purchased since May 2011 has no cracks. I use it daily, and haul it around everywhere I go in a daybag (up until a month ago when I updated to the 2012 model).

Well, I've now found a third owner on the CNET forums that has the same problem as my colleague and me.

@Isosunrise. my exact model number is NP900X3A-A01UK. If you could post yours that would be really helpful. I'm glad that there is at least one person out there without the problem - maybe Samsung can fix this.

i'm still unsure as to how even with it 'hollow' underneath its cracked? that area should never have any pressure applied to it anyway? is it an in transit crack? or during use?

If you pick the laptop up with two hands to move it on your desk while the screen is open, that spot is exactly where someone with average sized hands puts their thumb. I've asked a few people to move the laptop and they've all held it in exactly the same way.

Bottom line is it wouldn't have been too hard for samsung to make it supported underneath. They didn't, therefore it cracks.

And, I think I've now found a 4th person with the same problem - so that's now 5 owners, 4 with the same crack.

I've got 1 of these and they are awful, purchased brand new. This product is renowned for poor battery life, snapping hinges due to poor product quality build which Samsung deny and blame wear and tear but the most frustrating part is the internal screws around the keyboard. Due to the thin design the screws have been tightened so tight at the warehouse that less than 3 months the area around will begin to crack. And Samsung will completely deny any responsibility or accept proof via forums.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/samsung/657166-series-9-cracked-case-2-owners.html

INFO: Samsung Series 9… a fracture in the corner plastic « Kurt Shintaku's Blog

Due to the build the base has to be changed to fix which costs approx. 400-500 pounds and thus the reason why Sasmung will refuse to classify this as poor build but blame wear and tear.

Terrible product but far worse customer support.

If you have made the error of buying this piece of junk I strongly advise you buy an extended 2 year warranty from argos (UK)- they are the cheapest

Unbelievable. When I first reported it they should have replaced it according to UK consumer laws, but they didn't. I've now found 4 users without even looking, and only a single other user who doesn't have the problem.

Bottom line - a laptop which breaks is not worth the premium price this has attached to it.

My Samsung 900X3A has also got this problem. Crack in the bottom left corner (exactly as pictured in the previous link) and now also 2 small cracks approx 1 mm apart and about 3mm long have appeared along the bottom of the keyboard but from the direction of the space bar, if that makes sense.

I contacted Samsung and they had me send in some pic's, to cut a long story short they are having it collected for repair on Wednesday but have stressed that if it is deemed not to be a manufacturing fault I will end up with the bill! I have politely told them if this is the case i will be taking it further - shocking for such an expensive laptop!

That's the same story they gave me. It is worth noting your consumer rights at this stage - I don't believe they can hold your property to ransom, but its probably worth a separate thread to discuss that.

I am starting to lose count of how many people we have with the same problem. I think it is enough to maybe consider writing a joint letter to samsung, and include some of the consumer rights groups in the senders list. I have a really busy week so will look at this at the weekend.

Keep us posted on how the repair of your manufacturing fault goes.

Well, good news, I have spoken with Digicare (Samsung repair centre) this morning and they've confirmed the crack is a manufacturing fault. They are waiting for parts to come in to repair it and it will be back with me by Friday.

I am a bit worried that after it's been repaired the same thing will happen again and did stress this but if they have acknowledged this fault now it's a start.

Hopefully Samsung will start to recognise this as a major flaw in this laptop!

    OH THANKS THANKS THANKS

I bought my samsung 900x3a_A05US in america last September 2011 as I wanted the 256SSD drive not issued in the UK 0 and not long after getting it I got the crack in the same place on the left hand corner !! and i really look after my PC !! then I also got a crachk under the space bar !!!

I will contact digicare today to see if I can get mine also repaired BUT also concerned it may well break again !!

Love the machine but supprised the re-designed the casing so shortly after the 900 was released and still called it the same model number !!!

It is 100% a manufacturing issue I have had this confirmed by a professional Samsung Repair Centre. Unfortunately, all Samsung repair centres are 3rd party organisations and thus are certified by Samsung to repair their products but do not have the clout to make them admit their failings.

The cracks are only the first problem that comes with this build. It is shockingly poor, and issues with the hinges and power supply socket will follow shortly.

As for the SATA drive, unfortuantely I did the same only to be informed the internal drive is a mini-SSD so a standard size SSD will not fit!

As I mentioned before the product should be recalled as its not fit for purpose but like all big companies they refuse to accept their failings. I have contacted them on several occasions and they just simply refuse to admit or accept the issues. I informed them of all the sources on the web but they dismissed the Web in their own words: "as a reliable source of information"

Sorry to bring up such an old thread but I have the exact same crack in the same laptop on both corners like that. I was wondering which process you guys followed to get it fixed. And let me know if yours was under warranty, mine is 2 years old so I don't think I have warranty any more. Thanks.
