I bought a Samsung R519 laptop with T4200 processor yesterday from Argos. After completing the initial setup which took about 30mins I was able to log in successfully and the laptop appeared to be running Vista normally. However, I very quickly became aware of a rather noiceable buzzing, static like, sound coming from the left hand side under the keyboard. The sound occurs only when the computer is doing things. For example, when moving or resizing windows or the Windows Start menu is selected and the mouse is left hovering or moved around the start menu area. The sound also occurs when the hard disk is accessed, although I'm pretty sure its not from the hard disk, as the hard disk is situated in the front rhs of laptop. The disk itself sounds normal. Using the computer on mains or battery appears to make no difference.
The sound can be clearly heard especially when working in a quiet environment and is extremely annoying. I plan to take the laptop back to Argos to see whether it there is a fault. If it is, hopefully I can get a repair or a replacement quickly. I was wondering whether anyone has come across this problem or whether this is a known 'feature'? Shame, really, as I'm really pleased with the laptop overall.
Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

My first thought is whether this could be the infamous CPU whine, but that doesn't fully match the symptoms. You have not mentioned the fan. Samsung's fans are normally relatively quiet and don't operate for very short periods. However, have you identified and excluded the fan noise? If you have done so, then something isn't right and some component must responsible. I would try to get the computer swapped for another one.

Some good points. Its definitely not the cpu whine problem. Regarding the fan, I can hear it start and stop at regular intervals, and I believe it's running normally. I took the laptop back to the shop it was purchased from and they have agreed to swap it for another. They’re out of stock at the moment but I should get the replacement by the end of the week.
Thanks for your help.
