In retrospect, I'd just keep the 640 gig drive that was already inside. You keep the long battery life, and you get the extra space. the only time I really notice a difference with this drive is when I start the computer up. Opening iTunes and such doesnt really matter.

BTW if you guys install the latest version of flash player. it destroys your ability to watch youtube videos. The cure is go to a site like vimeo, select a video, right click the video, select settings and turn off hardware acceleration.

Good news! New NVidia video drivers available (though not from Samsung's official support site)

Samsung QX410 Video Drivers | Nathaniel Hardisty

    This updates from (ver.8.17.12.5941) ----- > (ver.8.17.12.6672)

No changelog available. I am installing now and will post any changes. I'm hoping for improvements in video streaming for one.

Hope this helps many of you! :)

Edit: I managed to find a link to a newer Intel HD 64-bit (8.15.10.2253) driver as well.

    http://org.downloadcenter.samsung.c...475/Internal_VGA_Intel_64bit_8.15.10.2253.ZIP

For any missing Intel drivers you can use the following link. After updating to the latest drivers on the Samsung support page, it allowed me to update the Intel Wireless Network driver. It will tell you what has an update available. It will not allow you to update the Intel HD graphics however.

    http://www.intel.com/support/detect.htm?iid=dc_iduu

You should probably use Internet Explorer to run that as Chrome did not work for me.

Lastly, I'll provide the link to the RF511 model which should have several newer drivers that are interchangeable I believe. This is probably where the previous drivers I linked originated. If the drivers have similar but slightly higher version numbers, it is most likely the same component used which can use the same driver. :)

    http://www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/NP-RF511-S03US

DOWNLOAD/INSTALL ALL OF THESE AT YOUR OWN RISK. I'M NOT IN CHARGE OF ANYTHING THAT COULD RESULT.

I just got this notebook 3 days ago. It's a wonder compared to my HP DM4, which I am now sending back to HP for repairs. Unlike the DM4, which I've had to bring back to HP twice in the 5 months I've owned it, this device works like a dream.

I am never getting an HP notebook again and I now have more respect for Samsung than I used to.

    Hi,

I brought the samsung qx410 2 days back and when I am trying to see flash based streaming videos at full screen the system freezes in both mozilla and google chrome. The videos seem to work fine in IE when I do full screen. Can someone please help as I really like the comp and hate to give it back for this issue??

Actually not since I had given my comp to the geek squad who are apparently not smart enough to take care of the issue. They suggested that I should simply buy some other computer

I believe it's an issue with Nvidia & Flash. They're currently working on improving it with new drivers. I think some of the later drivers even have hardware acceleration disabled until they get it working again.

I was able to get the videos working on mozilla by disabling the hardware acceleration. Of course, the geek squad refused to do it since it was a suggestion from one of the forums! Thanks for the help

Just picked up the QX the other day. It's my first laptop and I'm really liking it so far, the keyboard is waaaay better then the Dell Vostro 1510 I use at work, actually everything is better than that thing, lol.

One thing I'm trying to sort out is a good case/bag for it though. I was about to buy a Case Logic VNA214 until I saw a review that said the QX410 won't fit.

Does anybody have any case recommendations?

Can someone confirm if this laptop supports SATA Revision 3.0 (SATA 6 Gbit/s) disks, like the upcoming Vertex 3 SSD ?? I cannot find such information in the manual that was with my laptop.

The QX410 uses the Intel HM55 chipset which supports 3Gb/s SATA. A 6Gb/s storage device will connect but will run at only 3Gb/s.

I got a good 14" Targus case from Best Buy. It's black and doesn't have any pockets which gives it a clean look. The fit is snug too with a little room. I don't know if you were looking for one with pockets though....

Timbuk2 Envelope sleeve. I usually hate computer bags, but this company seems to have perfected the art. They are durable, VERY snug, come in any design you want, and I just want to stress DURABLE again.

For instance, I was in my truck driving home and I had my computer in my Envelop Timbuk2 Sleeve sitting next to me on the passenger seat. The car ahead of me stops abruptly to make a missed turn, I slam on my brakes and the sleeve goes flying about a 2 feet hits the dash board and falls to the floor. The computer was in perfect shape, and I know without the sleeve the thing would have atleast had a crack in the bottom plastic and or a dead hd.

    1. Leave the computer on overnight. Windows may be doing indexing (unless you disabled it) but once it is done then the computer can spend much more time on idle.
    2. Did you install the Samsung Battery Manager utility?

overnight with no autoshut off and/or screen dim etc ? pretty much let the battery drain? or plugged in ?

I don't know what indexing is so I assume its still enabled lol

& yes i did install it, but it just gives the option to charge up til 80% instead of 100% to prolong the battery health

Can anyone explain how to enable Gigabit Ethernet on this thing? All the computers at my work can pull from our networked storage drive at speeds close to 600MB's a second, that 600 megabytes not bits, and thats sharing the Gigabit line between about 20 machines. But when I plug my machine in and configure the ip settings and dns settings, i'm only able to pull about 10.5 a second whcih is right in line with a 100mbit ethernet port. I know it has Gigabit ethernet, I just can't find the setting to enable it.

Also, when I transfer files to my NTFS external usb3 storage drive, it only transfers files at 12MB a second. That seems a little slow.

You can change the link speed settings in Device Manager > Network Adaptor > Properties. Automatic usually works, but you may want to try setting it to Gigabit.

I don't think that the QX410 has USB 3.0, but 12MB/s is slow for USB 2.0. Please run the test using HDTune. Transfer rates can become very low if you are transferring small files.

I ended up picking up a Swissgear Messenger bag from Office Max. So far it's perfect for me.

I just installed a 120gb SSD and I'm reinstalling drivers and software to get things going again. I'm having some problems installing the Optimus software from Nvidia. Anybody else have this issue?

Also, I can't find the right software to get teh hot keys back that samsung had by default.

Is the QX310 the SAME THING as QX410 materials wise ? (Aluminum etc?) ?

Also, I see similar Samsung models Q430 and Q330, are these also full-aluminum casing laptops ? What is the difference ?

Question regarding the battery life cycle.

I am using this laptop for a lot of hours in my work, so it is like a desktop.

My question is when it is fully charged (actually not fully, 80%, as I use the bios setting and the battery life extender mode), should I remove the power cable (at that moment, the windows icon says battery full, not charging) letting it use the battery and when it is empty to recharge it every time or to let the power cable on ? What is it better an extended battery life cycle?

THIS IS INTERNAL SEAGATE HYBRID SSD/HD Momentus XT I replaced the original drive for hopefully more speed.

THIS IS THE EXTERNAL DRIVE I wen't out and bought an external exclosure and stuck the original 640 GB that came with the computer into it. External enclosure is USB3.0 but the test was done with 2.0 considering the computer doesn't have 3.o.

Once again, to shine some light on why im posting these images. It's because when I try and transfer big files from my computer to the drive (video footage from my camera mostly) it will transfer really slow compared to what USB2 usually does, close to 12mb a second. How to I increase this?

Also, when i depress the right and left click portion of the keypad, the area in which the depression is effective has become very small. For example, if i depress the left click near the corner, the computer doesnt recognize it. It's very frustrating especially when I compare it to other all-in-one touchpads.

When the external HDD is plugged in, go into Device Manager, select the HDD and select policies. Then make sure that the Removal Policy is set to better performance (this means that Windows will not wait for confirmation that each file is written before sending the next one). Also experiment with the write caching options to see which one is fastest.

Wow, that worked perfectly it is now transferring 3x faster. Close to around 34MB a second. That should seriously be an popup option the first time you plug in a drive. Thanks a million you've answered my anomaly questions like 3 times now. Do you own this laptop?

You can take it to any computer repair shop and they'll order the battery. Once it's ordered they will unscrew the screws at the bottom and im assuming the battery will look like a RC race car battery but much bigger and it should be very easy to remove the old one and replace with the new one.

Also, for those of you using "live downloader" to grab your favorite videos from youtube, vimeo etc. It's got a bug in it for our laptops where for no reason it hikes up the CPU 25% and stays there, by in large killing our battery. I can confirm it doesn't do this on my netbook, but then again, it's running XP.

I've been through several Samsung notebooks (see my signature for the list). The X60 is with my son and the NC20 with my wife. However, the problem we have just fixed is a general Windows issue.

Flash can also be a power guzzler. I use Firefox with Flashblock so that Flash only runs when really necessary.

    I see.

Flash is behaving okay, it's just this program that finds the root file from the video wether it be mpg,flv or otherwise, and allows you to download it easily.

All and all i'm happy with Samsung effort, if the mouse-pad was a generic two button instead of this forced attempt at a single pad it'd be a much better latpop.

The speed of the laptop is counteracted by the loss in effectiveness of the clickpad. I might see if I can do something about it, maybe replacing it with another samsung mousepad. For now i've been carrying a G500 with me to work and use it at home as much as possible.

Guys, what do you do when you are using this laptop for a lot of hours, near ac power? Do you plug the charger or let it discharge? I am looking for the best way to keep the battery life up as long as possible. In my old laptop I was removing its battery when on ac power, but obviously with this laptop I cannot do that.

My general policy is that if I am near an AC socket then I use mains power. I also try to minimise the full discharges except to do one every few months in order to recalibrate the battery. It is the chemical processes associated with discharging / charging that cause the deterioration.

I've just installed Ubuntu as dual boot, I was wondering if anyone had got their touchpad gestures working on it yet.

Also I've tried to install the dedicated graphics card driver which essentially crashed the GUI so I had to revert.

Against my better judgement I ended up installing macbuntu theme, I changed everything I dislike about the mac interface and removed all apple logos. I might end up going back to default theme as this was just an experiment, if anyone browsing was interested.

Everything else works a little worse on Ubuntu but everything essential works perfectly.

So no graphics acceleration? That kind of eliminates Shake, and Nuke, not to mention no beryl or any of the cool open source ui projects for ubuntu.

I'm going to try and get os x running on it, but i'd like to have someone else doing it with me as well to tag team any problems we would face. If you're interested in mac os x, bsd/unix much more reliable than windows.

I installed ubuntu just yesterday so I haven't looked too in-depth into the nvidia driver issue, someone else may already have a solution. I haven't tried any of the programs you listed, though I see they are also compatible with windows.

I did research few hours about installing os x before ubuntu but after installing macbuntu, I realized there really isn't anything I can do in os x that I can't in ubuntu. Security and looks are both there in macbuntu, windows for functionality. It would be neat to have os x installed but the touchpad will not function like a mbp. If you do manage it then I can imagine a lot of people would choose to buy the QX510 over MBP .

What would you get, a qx10 without any warranty or an hp dm4 with 12 months ? Same price.

Hopefully. Well, Mac OS X you get to run all of the Mac OS programs and having iLife is far superior to anything on the Open Source side in terms of integrated app communication. But Ubuntu and Mac OS X both really suck without graphics acceleration, i'm sure though theres a a repository for the 310m card considering Nvidia has always been pretty cool about things.

Deff though would be great compitition for the MBP even though the samsung touchpad is just not mechanically up to par with the one on the apples.

qx410 comes with a 1 year from the factory. you're in a samsung qx410 thread, what do you honestly think our vote was?

If the driver is ever updated to enable one click touchpad I would be pretty much satisfied. Without their source code I'm not really sure how I would go about getting the different drivers to work on os x, supposedly all components for the qx410 have been run with os x before, if I knew of a way to test os x without risking my other OS's I would be all for developing a method.

You could add 310m driver for acceleration but a warning since ubuntu (maybe os x too) doesn't currently support optimus your battery life will be cut in half.

I am wondering if there is a way to allow for gestures and the single touchpad click in ubuntu. If there was a way to modify the generic driver ubuntu uses to allow for single click.

If the ODD is 9.5mm thick then you may be able to use the adaptor discussed here. I suggest that you remove your current ODD and then compare it for compatibility.

I tried this. [Link deleted by moderator.]

Everything wen't smoothly until step (8) getting to the installation screen. I've tried CPUS=1, and -x to no avail. You get the the white page with the apple and the spinning wheel but then the wheel the just stops spinning and the no progress seems to be made.

Any ideas if or when the QX410 might come to Europe?

I'm still not sure about the palmrest area: Is it made of aluminum as well or just plastic with a metal-looking finish to it?

Just a heads-up that there's a BIOS update available for the QX410. I just updated from 03MX to 04MX a few minutes ago. I don't know what the changes are.

    Samsung QX410 Drivers

Also I found some drivers from the the new 9 series that works for ours

    Intel Rapid Storage Technology 10.1.0.1008
    Internal VGA Intel 8.15.10.2266
    Sound 6.0.1.6271

    Samsung Series 9 Drivers

Install these at your own risk. I'm not responsible for any issues you might come across.

Even when we've gone out and purchased a $30 mac os x install CD from Apple? I can understand discussing stealing intellectual property, but I'm positive what we're doing is not illegal. But it's your forum, i suppose.

where do you see the bios update on that page you linked us? I also tried the update manager built in with Samsung nothin.

If you go to the first link I posted specifically for the QX410, go to the firmware tab and download that application. It is used to check which firmware you are currently running and will download/update if it is outdated.

In my case, I was on 03MX and it said 04MX is available. I then downloaded and updated. After a day of using my laptop, I can't tell the difference. It may have improved battery for all I know but won't know unless I see release notes. Anyone have any idea how to access that information?

    Good call.

    http://sbuservice.samsungmobile.com/upload/BIOSUpdateItem/ITEM_20110315_79_WIN_04MX.exe
that's the direct link so you don't have to download that program.
