'm looking for a compact USB 3.0 card reader that handles SDXC cards at SDXC speeds not just SDHC speeds. My new laptop, a Samsung Series 7 17.3 inch, has a built in SD card slot and is listed as SDXC but when using my Sandisk 64GB Exterme Pro SDXC card the transfer rate is less than 20MB/sec even though the card is rated at 95MB/sec. So, I suspect the laptops card slot is a legacy SDHC reader that's handling the SDXC at the slower SDHC speeds.

The thing is, with my Nikon D800E camera I can easily record over 30GB/day and transfering that much data at <20MB/sec is painful. So, what I'm looking for is a smallish card reader with USB 3.0 interface and true SDXC high speed read/write performance. Any pointers?

I use a Transcend reader ( Amazon.com: Transcend USB 3.0 Super Speed Multi-Card Reader for SD/SDHC/SDXC/MS/CF Cards (TS-RDF8): Electronics) with my D800. It's cheap, and it's definitely faster than USB 2.0, but I haven't done any benchmarks with it. I've yet to write anything to the SD card in the D800 - everything so far is going to the CF card - I have it set up to record movies to the SD card, but have yet to record a movie.

Just ordered that for myself and the CF cards for my Canon 40D. USB 2.0 on a 32GB card with the camera is a bit tedious to say the least..............

I'd used CF cards with all my pro cameras before the D800e but decided to go with the Sandisk 64GB SDXC Extreme Pro card with this new camera because most laptops now provide SD readers and that would be one less thing to have to carry. But, even though the sales info indicated the reader in the 17.3 inch Samsung Series 7 laptop was SDXC it is not UHS-1 so now I'm hunting for a faster, UHS-1 compliant, SD/SDXC card reader.

On a photo site I frequent I posted the same question and so far the best option appears to be:

    Hoodman RAW UDMA USB3.0 Reader

I've never heard of them so I'm a little reluctant just yet...

Hoodman is a pretty reputable brand. They've been around for many years, starting in the film industry (movies). They have started offering numerous accessories for the DSRL market - I think most of their products are a bit pricey - I've never used them, so can't comment on how good they are.
