Ive looked on Crucial.com in teh UK for 200pin sodimm memory sticks that are 2gb in size.

There are two speeds available, both for the same price.

    pc2-6400 - 800mhz
    pc2-5300 - 667mhz

    Which one to get though?

and in case you did not know, XP does not benefit from more than 1GB unless you run applications that actually can exceed 1GB. I can open up 40 applications on my XP laptop without exceeding 1GB.

    cheers phil.

im running quite a few games which would benefit from the extra ram, plus i might get rid of the page file completely when i have 2gig of ram, just to cut out the disk accessing all the time which is quite slow.

If you get the DDR2-800, it'll give you a little bit of headroom in that the chips will probably be better and if you need to use it in a newer laptop or sell them, faster chips will be more desireable.

If they're the same price, why not, since faster memory is always supposed to be backward compatible with slower motherboards.

just for anyone thats reading this thinking about getting ram etc.
i made a mistake with my price from play.com

its £14.99 inc delivery for the PNY ram
its £17.99 inc delivery for the Kingstom ram

these prices might reduce even further come 1st December when the new V.A.T. band of 15% takes effect.

I've phoned Samsung and they do not recommend upgrading. They say that the NC10 has not been tested with 2GB as they are not sure if the processor can handle it. Might mean that your NC10 may degrade.

I checked why type of memory can be handle if it were 1GB and the first statement in this post is correct.

    pc2-6400 - 800mhz
    pc2-5300 - 667mhz

If anyone has upgraded please post your experience please.
With which memory you have purchased and at what price.

See this thread about the benefits of upgrading the RAM.

I suspect Samsung's official line about the 2GB is because, I recall, the manufacturers get a special price for XP on netbooks provided the hardware does not exceed certain requirements such as single core CPU, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, 1024 x 600 display.

Therefore, officially, Samsung should not have considered the option of putting 2GB in the NC10.

Wel i did upgrade my memory to 2GB in the end, shortly after my last post in this thread.

i got the pc2-6400 sodimm from crucial.com for approx £20 (i paid that little bit extra for the crucial name i know) including delivery.

ive been using the machine every day since and havent experienced any problems or system degradation of any kind.

im a heavy user (heavy as in using the machine to its max with games etc) and so i do benefit from having the extra ram in the machine.

i wouldnt say normal users would need 2gb on this machine unless they are doing photo editing on the go.

edit - i will add that actually installing the memory was easy as anything thanks to the handy slot on the back of the NC10, and its convenient positioning. wish my main pc was so easy to upgrade
