I've been looking at the Samsung X11 and X60s and almost bought an X11 online before deciding to head down to Tottenham court road in London to check one out in the flesh. Given Samsungs background in screens I was assuming the X11 would have a top notch display - I was wrong. Whites were grainy and slightly greyish and colours werent particularly vibrant either.

I also saw an X60 (possibly a Core Duo model) and wasn't hugely impressed by the screen there either. Has anyone else noticed the same? Normally I would just move on, but these two laptops are perfect for my needs aside from the screen

You sure the video and image sources you were looking at were good? If it was during one of their promo videos they run on those things, take it with a grain of salt. They compress the hell of out of those things and get all kinds of graininess and crap on it. If you actually got to use the laptop, could bring up something like google.com or a blank page and see that the white was speckled and uneven... you sure it wasn't just dirty? Most LCD's from any manufacturer any more tend to be pretty much top-notch. Maybe the ones you saw were well-used?

The display of my Samsung X60 is not as bright as my previous notebook (Asus W3A). This is a little surprising considering that Samsung is one of the major LCD manufacturers. I have started to wonder whether it suffers from the graininess problem which is much discussed in the Asus forum.

I would also note that the W3A's display initially seemed to be not as good as the Sony S series which it replaced, but this was fixed by tweaking the contrast.

I should also note that my X60's display gets positive comments from many other notebook users so, while it is not the best, it is better than many others. Ultimately, you need to select the computer which is the nearest fit to your overall requirements and there will always be compromises.

Pitabred, actually the screen looked reasonably good playing a HD trailor they had on there, it was in windows that I noticed the grainy whiteness. Also, I noticed the same thing in a couple of different shops so I don't think it was an issue just with the display model unfortunately. The X11 was sitting next to another Samsung model, a Q35 I believe, and the difference in quality was quite astounding.

John, you're definately right about the comprimises thing! I think I'm going to look at the Sony FE series tomorrow as the top model is about the same price as the X60 and has better spec overall but looses out on screen res.
