Most optical drives are user replaceable with a current model (costing US$50 upwards).

What is the model number of your current ODD (Device Manager will tell you) and also look in Device Manager, IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers to see if the optical drive has one IDE channel for itself. It is the device with a current transfer rate of UDMA2.

As for the RAM, download and run CPU-Z to (i) check the chipset and (ii) see how many RAM slots you have.
