Hi, I need help identifying something found inside a Samsung NP365e5c s05us. Its a small white square thing that's cool to the touch and is found below the keyboard. Now, I'm not really tech savvy and all that but I do have experience taking notebooks and laptops apart and putting them back together, mostly for cleaning and stuff. Anywho, most of the notebooks I've worked with are either HP, Dell or Asus but none of them have this thing. The unit I'm working on right now has been poorly treated by its owner which is why its infested with ants. And the ants, well, they sort of ate the white thing I'm talking about. So I'm gonna have to know what its called to replace it. Which brings me to why I'm here asking you guys for help. I have absolutely no idea what this thing is so if you could tell me what its called, that'd be great.

I added pics i took with my phone camera (sorry for the crappy quality)

    Is the computer still working?

I can't think of any electronic components which are likely to be edible, even for omnivorous ants. Might it be a thermal pad of some form?

YES! Thank you. According to descriptions from online stores, they are indeed thermal pads or "Silicone Based Thermal Conductive Pads" to be exact. *Ahem*

Anyway, to answer your question yes, the computer is still working despite the abysmal state it's in. In a way, you could say it's a testament to Samsung's fine craftsmanship.

    Again, thanks for your help.

So a new thermal pad (you can make one from layers of thinner pads if necessary) might be appropriate. I assume that Samsung felt that the little chip needed some extra cooling.

Those little ants get everywhere: Over 20 years ago I was working in the Philippines and watched a little ant walk across the screen on the inside. I quickly realised that trying to squash it would leave a permanent mess, so I let it carry on and it must have emerged somewhere.
