    hi there.
    i have just purchased a q310.
to cut a long story short, its a fantastic laptop, and im really happy with it.

however, sometimes the optical drive will seem to spin up random;ly even with no disc in, and even jump open arbitrarily sometimes!

is anyone else having this problem?

    many thanks

    That's not a problem I recognise.

It's as if some program wants to burn some files to a disc, checks if there is one in the driver and then opens the tray hoping you will put one in. What happens if you put a blank disc into the tray and close it?

    hi there.

    not quite.

it will sometimes spin up (even with no programs running) - realise that there is nothing there, and then stop.

other times it will just pop the tray out without spinning up, again randomly, without any programs running!

    strange!

I'm short of other suggestions at the moment. What is the model number of the optical drive? You can see this in Device Manager.

    Hi.

It`s the same drive as in my Q210, and i have not had that probelm.

But i dont like the dvd-r read speed at a max of 3-4x , when it can write at 8x

    Regards

    John.

    What firmware have you got?

The Samsung ODD site lists SC03 for the TS-L633L dated 05-11-08. You need to use the Live Update on that site to get at the firmware (the Live Update provided on Samsung notebooks seems to be very slow at finding updates).

    Hi, John

EDIT : I Goggled for SC03 TS-L633L and managed to find it, the link is below if you want it.

    http://www.samsungodd.com/korLib/po...ad&fname=200811051209342531_TS-L633L_SC03.exe

I have checked the Samsung site in that you linked and cannot find the SC03 for the TS-L633L dated 05-11-08 that you mention, I dont know why.

I have used the live update and it only gives my the option to upgrade to SC01

    thanks

    John.

It works for me by clicking on the link "What is the Firmware LiveUpdate Program" then clicking on Firmware Downloads. Then select Slim and you should see the TS-L633L listed with SC03.

    Hi.

I had the region hacked SC01 firmware, so i dont know if that was confusing it.

I used the firmware download i found and that worked, now it`s time to re-test the dvd-r read speed.

EDIT : dvd-r read speed us unchanged at 4x max

    regards

    John.

Is that read speed problem just with DVD-R and is OK with DVR-ROM and DVD+R?

And did you try more than one type of media?

    Hi John

I only use dvd-r they write at 8x which is great , but i always verify my burns and that`s what the problem is.

I just used nero info tool to check my black dvd-r read/write speed and i have listed them below.

TDK DVD-R 16X , they are being identified as 4x read, 8x write.

TUFFDISC DVD-R 16X , they are being identified as 6x read, 8x write.

But i have used both brands on my desktop pioneer dvd-rw and i get 16x write on both and the read speed is 16x also.

It`s just strange i can write at 8x but only read at 4x or 6x , i would have though it would be harder to write than read?

    Regards

    John.

You can use DVD Identifier to find out the real media type.

It's strange that the read speed is lower than the burn speed. However, the 8x burn speed is nominal and I think you will see that burning starts at slower speed and then gets faster. IIRC, these drives spin at constant speed and burning of the inner tracks is 4x or less.

It's not appropriate to compare performance with desktop burners which have room for bigger motors and access to more power. It's impressive that these slim burners work at all!

Once you have the relevant media data then you may want to pass this to Samsung technical support, perhaps using the email link on the FAQ page.

Two years back I had a problem with the burner in my X60 plus, sent and message and then got into communication with a person at the Samsung optical drive support in Europe. After various tests we concluded that the burner was defective and he arranged a replacement, which I did myself, so i didn't lose use of the computer.

In your case, the ODD support media should have a master table of the burning / reading performance for each media type. So, if you tell them the media type then they can confirm if what you are seeing is correct. They might also try to get the firmware changed so the read speed is better.

We've diverted a bit from richardplewis's problem. I think that may also be one for Samsung support. However, my last, and fairly drastic, suggestion, would be to reinstall Vista from the original backup image. If the problem still occurs once that is done then it will confirm that there's no software gremlin lurking in the computer and the problem is hardware.

i have the samsung q210 and i also have the TS-L633L...

i have the same problem of slow read spead...i mainly use DVD decrypt but the ripping is very slow...1.9-2.9x....when i use the same dvd on my desktop or an older laptop then it goes up to 9-11x.

I have checked everything but cannot find any solution....i come to the conclusion that this is just the way this drive is....and maybe they have done in on purpose to keep the sound down? Cause i cannot hear the drive revving up at all...

it's been sometime now from last post on this topic....and sorry to bring an old thread back to life...but has anyone managed to find any solution on the slow reading speeds of the TS-L633L? I have mine on a Q-210.

It looks like the drive's firmware is somehow locked at the silent mode....and it will read max up to 4x, and that is on DVD....on cd it does go higher...

    any ideas?

ok looking around and trying to rip some dvds....i got lucky and came across a program called ImgBurn.

The good thing about this program is that it has some settings for each drive. Under samsung i have chosen the high speed (not silent mode) and now the drive is ripping much faster. Is louder....but is starting let's say ripping from 4x going up to 8x...while before it was between 1 to 4x max...

just make sure that when you select that option on ImgBurn, you press "change"
