So old blu-rays still play on my Samsung r580 but I can't seem to play any of the new blu-rays anymore.

Is this just a software issue and if so, is there a free or super cheap software I can use to watch new blu-rays?

Or is it that my Blu-ray drive is outdated now and just won't work with the latest blu-rays no matter what software I have?

I am afraid I don't have a solution for you -- I never play movies on my PC :(

But your experience reminded me of discussions on AV forums about Cinavia which is a new copy protection scheme from the studies. I wonder if new discs having Cinavia protection is what you are seeing.

All Blu-Ray players since last year (not drives, players) are required to support Cinavia in order to be Blu-Ray certified. But older players without Cinavia should still play the newer disks -- and in fact such players are now becoming collectible because consumers don't want the stuff.

So IF Cinavia is what you are experiencing, I would think newer player software and/or firmware updates for the ODD should be able to solve. Check the vendor and model of your drive (in Device Manager) and google firmware updates for it.

Or maybe it's something entirely different you're seeing
