For over a month I'm a proudly owner of a Samsung X20. I'm very happy with it - it fits nearly perfectly to my requirements of a notebook.
The real Battery autonomy is around 4.5 hours although Samsung says 6 hours. There are really no heat problems, the maximal temperature I've ever got is 65° while I was playing and hosting Battlefield 2. When you just write office stuff or something you can use the SuperSilentMode, which works without any noisy fan.
If you are looking for a Samsung X20 1730 please keep in mind, that there are still older models with a poor cd-drive on the market. I recommend to buy one without a drive made by TEAC.
If you have any further questions - feel free to ask straight ahead!

i wouldn't buy a siemens-notebook at the moment because they have very great troubles with the built-in components. very poor builts at the moment ... hope, they will sell in the future better notebooks.
of course this problems are with models which are available in austria and germany. maybe siemens doesn't sell such bad products in US or in UK?

i think you probably get the most power with the acer, although there are newer models with nearly the sames specs available (the newest is 1695, i think).

    1) + very good display
    + good battery
    + 1024 ram
+ good built (the same as i have)
    - poor graphics (imho you don't need more for your games ..)
    3) + much power for less money
    - 512 mb ram
    - poor build

of all these three i would by the samsung. of course, i can say it easily. but i compared some notebooks in the store and the samsung was just the best. the model is nearly similiar, it just comes with onboard graphics and a smaller hdd. the best thing on the samsung is the really good build. the warranty isn't bad, you get 24 months pick-up in the whole eu ... can't complain. the support is nice (as i tried it before i purchased).
a review for my model is in progress ...

if you prefer to save 150 euro i would take the acer. it's really a better value than the two siemens ...

I was wondering whether the Samsung X20 (my eye also fell on that laptop!) is available in the Netherlands?

Currently, my eye keeps returning to the Acer 1692... but i hear stories about how the crappy robustness... and this '-poor build' just confirms it yet again.

Someone at my work actually puts a sleeve in between the keyboard and the screen, to prevent the keyboard from damaging the screen when the laptop is closed. She also has an Aspire.

I don't know wether the X20 is avaialable in the Netherlands or not. I'm sure there are some onlineshops which ship Samsung notebooks to the Netherlands too.
Some classmates of mine (about five) have Acer notebooks. One of them was never really functioning, another one has a very bad WLAN module, another one had a problem with the fan and another one has a problem with the space key.
IMHO the Acer service isn't as quick as everybody believes. The malfunctioning notebook (that one with the space key) has been to service since two weeks.
With such good experiences I am very glad that I have a Samsung and not a Acer.

    So long,

    Toooo laaate :)

I already bought the acer. (1692). Well lets hope the thing lasts a couple of years. So far i'm happy with it. It runs WoW with all settings on 'Maximum' without troubles.

I do have a problem setting up the ATI radeon with Linux...

the configuration of your acer is probably better than that of the samsung.
hope, you don't get troubles with your notebook
