Did you try looking in the BIOS (press F2 at the BIOS screen) to see what the device options are on the boot order menu?

A bootable floppy disk drive (which would be USB) should be there and possibly a USB optical drive. A bootable flash drive should look very similar to the BIOS. it's not something I have tried.

    yep looked in the BIOS

it recognises my usb external drive as a hard drive in the BIOS...

why would it have anything even related to a floppy disk

ill try it out when the drive I ordered turns up and let you know

Because that was the first bootable external device that BIOSes needed to support when FDDs stopped being internal.

well, didn't you have this laptop at one point... and you'll know it mentions nothing about a floppy in the BIOS

hopefully the drive will arrive today

    ta!

It's still in the house -my son is giving it a long term durability test. I can't remember all the BIOS options.

I can confirm, it's possible to boot the X60 from an USB stick. However, it's BIOS can't deal with all kinds of USB sticks. I've got two keys. From one it's possible to boot, but not from the other one. Yet, other PC's are able to boot from both.
So it's a question of luck, whether your USB key will be able to boot up the X60.
