Currently I am using AVG AV 2012. I have been on a 2 year license and it will expire in under a month.
I therefore ask the AV gurus here to help me out with a decision. I would like to buy the very best protection out there to replace AVG. If it is still perfectly good I have no complaints I can renew it.
All and any advice appreciated. Also thinking of buying 2 licenses for 2 machines so if one AV offers better deal there maybe one to go for?

I dropped AVG after it labeled a C++ Hello World "program" as a virus >.<
I use MSE and the free version of Malwarebytes. Combine that with common Internet sense and you won't get infected. A virus or malware script has never touched my two laptops. -

I have read that many like ESET and bitdefender. In fact I recommended a friend bitdefender last year after extensive research but I don't know the situation at the moment.
What are the opinions about them. I rather not run 2 programs just 1 all in one forget about it program

I highly recommend Firefox + adblock plus/noscript, and MSSE. You really can't go wrong with that combination, and they're free.

The only paid AV me or my family has ever ran was Webroot, and that was okay. I don't believe in paying for AV
.
Even my family, a bunch of people that are ripe for malware, don't get into too much trouble with the MSE + Malwarebytes combo I installed on their computer; only one case every few months of so. They're the kind of people that click on all the ad banners and Zynga crap and other garbage, soo... -
I've never been happier with an antivirus program as I am with Microsoft Security Essentials. The interface and the options really sucks compared to others, but the important part is that I have been virus-free so long.
-
I also have had excellent luck with MSE and recommend it. I supplement it with Hitman Pro with on demand scanning.

Nobody likes avg it seems however i also have been virus free for over a year!
Alot of choices. I don't like firefox so the adblock msse combo is out of the question and want to avoid combo's in general.
I shall look at MSE, BF and ESET for now. -
Chrome has a version of Noscript and Adblock if you like that browser.

'Total security' or usually touted as 'Internet Security suites' can be resource intensive and at times do more damage than good.
I find them completely unnecessary.
There is no need to have a full suite for these things because for example a 'simple' (but quality) AV is often the only solution that will actually prevent possible issues - whereas a 'full suit' comes with its own settings which the 'average user' might find... problematic.
To this day I have yet to encounter a problem from using just MSE and Windows Firewall.
To the OP.
I wouldn't 'buy' any new AV.
I would rather you consider one of the following free AV's:
Avast, Avira, MSE or Panda (only pick one of them though) - all 4 are free, highly effective and light on system resources (AVG has seemingly improved its detection rates, but it is still a relatively large resource hog).
MSE works best for Windows because it integrates directly into the OS and operates nicely with Windows Firewall, but as I said, Avast, Avira and Panda would be equally good choices. -

I have just done a Win 7 reinstall and I am going to go with MSE
Cheers Deks. Your post is very well written. Plus rep!

ESET I would like to recommend.
-
My dad use NOD32, but I use MSE or avast. I would get e free antivirus cause your logical thinking is the best antivirus. Nothing can beat that.
-
I would not buy anything.
I recommend MSE for the basic (no brainer) security. But it is not good with 0-day (very new) malware and adware or PUP.
Comodo is the real stuff. It is a top notch antimalware protection. Not a very good cleaner though (MBAM, Emsisoft and Hitmanpro are great tools here). But for the full protection this is my favourite. Low resources (around 10MB ram only) - and very, very powerful. Completely free. -
The more AV you have the more security on your laptop.
Plan to buy a NIS 2012 or a KIS 2012, but don't know which one is lighter and better. Help! -
That's not true when you are running more than one AV at the same time (i.e. both are providing real time protection). It's fine, and recommended, to run your typical AV like MSE, Avast, or whatever, coupled with on demand scans of something like Malwarebytes or Hitman Pro.
As far as KIS or NIS, I haven't used either but have heard decent things about NIS. I personally recommend you save some money and use something like Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes with Windows Firewall. It's free and effective. -
Yes, Free antivirus program is also good.
I think it's good enough for home PC.
Maybe you can try AVG-FREE. -
Unless AVG Free has gotten better at ignoring false positives and has stopped nagging about upgrading to the full version, I couldn't recommend it. As I said in a pervious comment, it detected "Hello World" as a virus
-
MSE works for me. Never had a virus since it came out. Of course I browse "wisely".
AV protection ends soon. What should I buy?
