AV-Comparatives have published their latest report on malware removal.
After the on-demand test, the pro-active test and the performance test, this is the last one for 2009.
In this test, a small selection of malware samples were used to test the cleaning/removal capacities of 18 well-known AV's.
For details about the malware sample selection, the AV settings and scanning methods used (normal, safe mode, AV Boot CD, etc.), please check out the report yourself (PDF link)
Removal capacity was classified in the summary results as 'Poor', 'Average', 'Good' or ' Very Good'.
None of the AV's deserved ' Very Good'.
From the free AV's, only MSE scored ' Good'.
Avira, Avast and AVG all scored ' Average'
Again, to put these scores into perspective, please read/glance over the report yourself.
Keep also in mind that this is the first malware removal test done by AV-Comparatives.
Cheers.

Nice. I just switched over to MSE from Avira too
-
Avira AP 9(has the highest detection rate) actually detects more threats than MSSE.
However, for overall easiness and standard protection as well as no false positive(Avira = FP King). MSSE is the BEST choice.
I found that Avira AP 9 detects threats that MSSE missed, while MSSE also detects threats that Avira AP 9 missed.
I tried to run both AVs together too. No problem. Lastly, I still remove Avira AP 9. -
do you think MSE can be use with threatfire???
coz they say that avira + threatfire is so damn good...!
how about that MSE + threatfire? -
If you're running MSE, Avira, or Avast you don't need to run Threatfire as well. Just pick one AV and get you some on-demand scanners like Malwarebytes and SuperAntispyware. Also get Spywareblaster for passive protection and you'll be fine unless you engage in risky online behavior.
-
You forgot to mention that Symantec and Escan also scored "good"
-
I think OP was talking about only the free AVs.
But yeah, Norton Antivirus scored "good"
-
I don't think they use the free version of Avira and Avast in that test.
But nonetheless, MSE manages to trounce even my favorite AV ESET does say something.
I just switched from ESET to MSE for a change, so far so good. -
If not mistaken, the FREE Avira and the PAID Avira have the same Virus-Date-Base. So, they detect the same things eventually.
PAID version have more features and protection areas only. -
also the paid version seems to update better than the free one a lot of times. a lot of people have had issues with the free version updating in the recent past
-
Avira updated their update servers for the free edition and now the updates are no longer slow.
-
i have this set up:
avira + threatfire
windows firewall
windows defender
is this good enough...?
or my laptop is in trouble??? -
That's a little bit overkill, unless you're some kind internet user who would click on every single pop up and strange link.
-
Your setup is ok except for threatfire. I've used that setup before and threatfire slows down my NB especialy during boot up. Avira is enough for casual browsing
-
try this MSE, very good... virus in our office PC didnt detect by avira, avast, or bitdefender... but when i install MSE... he detect in a blink of an eye...! and delete the virus...! so damn good, highly recommended...!
the set up of that office PC is only:
MSE
windows firewall -
my setup is:
avira
adaware
defender
windows firewall
i like avira and adaware because they both have on-demand scanning in the right click menu. they can also both be deactivated from their notification icons ie. during gaming , etc.
i wanna try mse but i dont know if it has on-demand scanning and easy disabling.
