If that's the case then I'm switching to Avira. The new AVG is fine but you can't even disable any features without having an exclamation covering the system tray icon. Annoying.

yeah im hoping when the 30days expire and the email scanner turns off without giving me that exclamation mark.

cant someone find a hack or registry tweak to override that annoying exclamation mark?

So we go through the AVG installation and finish it. Then run the setup again but instead click on add/remove components or something along those lines?

Follow the instructions in the top quote first, replacing the "*" with the correct file version, which will launch the installer without the Linkscanner component.

Leave "Add & Remove Components" selected when the installer begins. You will then have the option of deselecting the email scanner as well, and then proceed with installation.

The missing components will no longer show up on the AVG User Interface, and no more exclamation point in the system tray (killing two birds with one stone). :)

You could have done a custom install without even installing whatever you don't need.

Yeah i didnt think of that when i first installed it. I just want to get rid of the email scanner, this eats up resources even though i dont use it. Ill just have to do the add/remove component method

The LinkScanner isn't my only issue. I also dislike the auto-updates. If I disable that in AVG, I still get the exclamation.

You can set it so it doesnt try to update when you startup (if you miss your schedule). That should stop the exclamation mark for auto updating

It only does it if it fails to update when theres no internet connection. If its not set to update then it shouldnt annoy you

Wow! Thanks to the OP for the heads up! :D I thought they were gonna keep the free edition only as 7.5, not 8, till like until AVG 9 would release... This is nice, I'm downloading now, about to try it out! :D

I turn off auto-update all together. I don't like it on when I'm on or when I'm off, ya know? I like to manually update my programs.

^^^ Arkit, the same for me! :) Auto-update just pisses me straight off! Not to mention that typical windows "You're computer is at risk" FUBAR alerts since you've only turned off auto windows updates and decided to do it manually! :p

You know how to turn that off, right?

    Just checking. :p

I can understand not wanting the APPLICATION to update itself, but why would you not want to auto update the virus definitions?

I don't want to be in the middle of a game or CPU-intensive application and then all of a sudden lag because of a virus definition. I manually update my security programs every morning and evening. I think that's good enough.

I agree with Arkit. I myself tend to keep looking regularly for windows and anti-virus, etc. etc. updates.... And don't need the application to do it automatically.... Sometimes if it's some big update (like the 450MB Office 2007 SP3 update) I would NOT like it slowing down my priority downloading... which I would keep going on overnight.... And that had happened....

No matter how many times you check for updates, the free version gets it updates only once per day.

AVG uses a scheduler to do exactly that. You get to specify the time you want it to check. It's not some random thing that would interrupt your game.

Yeah, but I don't check the exact same time everyday, ya know? It varies from day to day and I check when I feel like it. I don't want to have to watch the clock and pause my game or stop what I'm doing while it updates. IMO, it's better to just do it myself when I have the time.

Set it to 5am and tick "update on startup if schedule is missed"

I only like it when it updates at log in

Not true. While the program only checks for updates once in 24hrs, there have been countless times that definition updates have been available twice in the same day when run manually (the auto-updater would pick up an accumulative file the following day to make up for it though).

I agree with Arkit3kt and prefer to run them manually at my own discretion. The biggest complaint I get from "customers" (whom I've setup units for) is that the AVG 7.5 updater was intrusive & annoying. It popped up in front of anything the user was doing, and was even worse when the updater erroneously timed out during high network activity.

The 8.0 version seems to have fixed these flaws as there are no longer any visible notification windows when the update is running on auto, but I'd still rather set it to manual. At least then I know what the program is doing and when I want it to do it. :)

Nope you are wrong. You might have to read in detail the user manual or in the grisoft web site regarding limitation of updates in the free edition.

version 7.5 had an option to hide the update pop up as i did that when I used AVG.

As mentioned in the Cnet review, the E-mail scanner in the free version does not expire in 30 days. The expiration is only for the AVG 8.0 trial version.
