Hey, was just wondering what everyone's opinion was of these two free anti-virus software. I've never used AVG Free, and use Avira on my GF's notebook. I see AVG Free has anti-spyware in their free version, vs none in Avira. Is either one better than the other, or are they similar enough to not worry about it?
Just curious on everyone's opinion.
Thanks

I know AVG Free is more popular and widely used.
Ive used it before, it was pretty good, but not as good as NIS 09, but thats not free. -

I like AVG I use I have no comment on the other as have not used.
-
yes it is true that anti-spyware is inside in the newest version. i have used the free version for ages and it was good (now i've switched to the paid version), i have not used avira though.
i guess that none of them is bad. -
Both are good free anti-viruses. I've used both in the past and have had little complaints about either if not simply that Avira usually bugs me to buy the pair version lol
-
I use avast on my pc and it works great, also free, as for spyware, take a look at spybot search and destroy also free. Avast is better protection than AVG normally (at least it used to be), however i've never used avira.

Easily Avira. It has a better scanning engine, it's lighter on the resources, and there haven't been too many complaints about it. When AVG 8.0 came out, there were tons of problems reported on here and many people switched.
In terms of ranks: Avira > Avast > AVG -
avira is far better than avg is.. any day of the week

User actions are far more important than any anti virus. Truth is if you have a clue as to what you are doing you do not need anti-virus. I ran for 8 years no virus, have run two years with AVG no virus's found. Be smart not stupid.

AVG served me pretty well for a year or two while I was between Norton Symantec and something better. Eventually I settled on NOD32 antivirus, which I find to be extremely robust while light on resources. It costs money, yes, but you get what you pay for in this case.

I haven't used AVG...I am happy with Avira since I switched over from Trend Micro
eek
.
As long as Avira works fine for me, I will continue using it!

Avira, I lost faith with AVG after the whole 8.0 10,000 false positives debacle.
-
Avira definitely.
Disable that nag screen.
AVG became a system hog when it became that all-in-one-ish security system. Avira is light yet reliable. -
Used AVG for a long time. Disliked the new AVG 8 and switched to Avast and then to Avira. I find Avira to be the best all rounder.

You people are really brilliant. thanks.
Oh, did i say AviRa FtW ? -
Avira FTW!
i used AVG before and it couldnt get rid of this one virus that avira did. and that was enough for me. + avira is lighter and works better paired with threatfire -
I've used both. I like the feel of AVG better; I can't comment on the performance differences, as I've never had Avira actually find any viruses.

This should help decide
http://securityandthe.net/2008/11/10/avg-virus-scanner-removes-critical-windows-file/
AVG marks critical windows file as virus and offers to delete it. -
avira. good AV even when gamin g
-
I switched to Avira from AVG - AVG was getting too bloated and demanding. I like it better overall, and now that I can turn off that stupid nagging I like it even more.
-
Avira FTW lightweight and reliable

do you guys consider McAFEE a waste off space on your computers
i was told for my new laptop vostro 1700 to add it on the machine?
i was looking for freeware that actualy works on this dell machine??????? -
Yeah, McAfee is pretty bad. It's a lousy firewall and anti-virus program.
-
Avira is way better than AVG nowadays. Also put Avast! in your consideration.

AVG 8.0 tries to delete Crysis.exe and other executable flash files. That problem was there in version 7.5. Even on the latest version they have not corrected it. Because of this irritating problem, I switched over to Avira Free 8.2. At least it asks my permission before doing anything.
AVG Free vs AVIRA free anti-virus
