I've been using Avast for a year and half. Updates all of the time.
It blocked that SpySheriff download :)

i am using Avira. Have just made a system scan, and Avira has found 4 Troyans. Firstly during the scan i moved them to Quarantine, than went to Quarantine and deleted those 4 Troyans, Did i do right? Had they deleted from my system fully?

Yes, they have been fully deleted. It would be a good idea to do another scan just in case though.

I have tried installing Avira Antivir Personal several times and I not been able to get it to work or update. I uninstalled AVG wiped it with Ccleaner and Advanced Windows Care rebooted. I will not run or update. I says "Job Not Found" when trying to update.

I downloaded it from their site and download.com and tried to get it to work 4 times. I went to the support forum on their website and did not find anything related to this issue.

I am wondering if it has anything to do with running Vista Business 32 bit?

I guess that I will try Avast or go back to AVG.

Did you uninstall Norton Inet.Security? if so, then you need to download reg_appdata_winvista from Avira's site or google it. It is caused by Norton that Avira could not update.

I started system scan again and got this error:
i press ok, but window appears again and again. i sent this pic to Avira's support, they redirected me to their forum, but i haven't found solutions for that bug.
Also wanna add that the scan continues itself despite this error appears.

No, I stay far away from anything Norton!

I just get a box saying "Job Not Found" and nothing else. I rebooted and tried again and got the same message.

I used it and I still am unable to get the Avira program to work. I installed Avast, but I removed it after trying it out. It is slow and sucks up too much memory.

I guess that I will revert back to AVG. I have not had any issues with it for the past 5 years.

After further research, I found this knowledge base article and installed the file and then installed it again.

    Avira is now working perfectly!

The funny thing is that I have never had Norton on this machine, but somehow the applicable appdata entry was missing.

Thanks for the information. I ran into the same trouble after running the norton removal tool and I reverted back to AVG. I don't like the intrusive nature of Avira.

I've used AVG for 4 years now without a hitch. Its memory usage was ~7.5 MB after about an hour of browsing.

I installed Avast a few days ago and right now its memory usage is ~30MB which is very significant. I only installed the residant shield and nothing else (no email, network guff etc etc). It did pick up that file from spysherriff but i tested it on my brothers pc and AVG didnt flag up that install file as malware.

I also swicthed from Zonealarm to Comodo and it has been a pain in the arse! It uses ~2 MB more than ZA (13MB Comodo vs 11MB ZA) but seems a lot more fiddly. It didnt flag up svchost so it took ages for me to figure out why i couldnt connect to the internet. ZA flagged it up on install. I had to disbale Defence+ since i got message after message of god knows what and got sick of it.

So after changing from AVG/ZA to Avast/Comodo, I am not very happy!

as you know i'm using Avira ( free version). im thinking of getting ESET NOD32 Antivirus. As far as i know Nod32 is the best one, so is Nod worth to drop Avira and go for it?

Avira Antivir is a very good anti-virus. I personally think that you shouldn't really worry about getting NOD32 unless you need better protection either because you feel paranoid or need your files safe no matter what. I went with it because i thought i should just get the best protection and be done with it.

Calvin you made me unworried again. i just thought to go for nod, cos i found 3 troyans on my lappy, and supposed avira is not good at all cos of these troyans got in my system. but i haven't made a system scan for a period of 3 weeks, so this is more my fault.

If you don't have any active scanners and only have a manual scanner then you should expect to find stuff on your system. If you want active protection combined with one of the best anti-virus scanners then get NOD32. But if you're fine with just scanning and finding it after it gets on your system, use Avira Antivir.

I'm waiting for AVG 8 as well. Hopefully the new GUI and added features won't slow it down more in Vista...............

Sorry for the stupid question, but is AVG and Avira real time active scanners? Would it be okay to have two anti virus scanners, a on-demand and a real time one but only using the on-demand for manual scanning?

what about McAfee antivirus.. if u have broadband (high speed internet from cable or even dsl) they usually give u antivirus from Mcafee for free. so what about Mcafee

Didn't like McAfee myself. Check to see if they're giving just the software for free or the software AND the subscription. Know what, even if it was free, I still wouldn't use it over the free alternatives out there. Avira as my primary scanner and Avast as my active protection and secondary scanner gives me more than enough anti-virus protection.

IMHO, McAfee is a resource hog. Whether it is safe or not is up for grabs. But in all of the independent tests I have seen posted in this forum and elsewhere, it typically is ranked low on the list - if it even makes the list. I had it for 4 years, it protected my laptop well, but man did it choke it! I am now using Avast! and Spyware Blaster and all seems to be working better.

So, I'm trying to decode all this jibberish.

I would like real-time protection, I'm NOT worried about RAM useage but I AM worried about CPU usage AND I protect my boot-time.

I just installed Avira (free). Do I need another solution for real-time protection?

Also, should I disable Windows Defender, if so, what should I replace it with?

Oh yes, and should I opt for Comodo instead of the normal firewall? (I do 90% of my browsing behind my wireless router)

    Remember:
I don't want anything to beef my boot-times and needlessly chew up my CPU

    Thanks!

Avira is fine for both real time and on-demand virus protection. Enable windows defender. It's a good real time spyware protection program. I would also recommend to get some secondary spyware scanners like Super antispyware or A-squared. If you are an average user Windows firewall would be just enough. I use eset online scanner just as a secondary malware scanner.

Anything more than your current setting will be beefing up your boot time.

Disable Windows Defender and use SpywareTerminator. It has real time protection.
My desktop is using Avira AntiVir + SpywareTerminator, it's pretty safe.
