I'm sure this has been asked maybe a million times (and if so im sorry) but im intrigued about how much memory everyone's Anti-Virus of choice is using?
I've just been looking through Windows Task Manager and from what I can see:
Anti-Virus: NOD32
Memory Usage: 39,300 K
OS: Windows Vista 32bit
I wonder if that's good or bad in comparison?

Antivirus: Avira
Memory usage: avguard.exe- 9,780k
avgnt.exe- 2,564
OS: Windows Vista x64
Probably lower on my Windows 7.
Why is Nod32 using so much? You aren't doing a scan are you? -
No it's idle right now. Judging by your usage NOD does seem to be using a rather high amount, i wonder if it means anything.
EDIT: May I ask, which version of Avira do you use? -
It's been a very long time since I've use Nod32, and I do not recall its memory usage. There are a lot of Nod32 users on this board so hopefully they can shed some light. -

It's looking like it's maybe time for a change!

NOD32 64 Bit here, 43 MB usage, but that has nothing to do with how it impacts/slows down your system, I belive it's the way the scanning engine works is what makes it this much lightweight that you don't even feel there is an AV system on your OS.
I have to admit, the old v2.7 was much lighter, but still, I never feel anything is slowing me down at all even after installing NOD32. want an example? when I first format, install OS + all updates + settings + Office, I have no AV, then when I install NOD32, and continue installing my other software, i still feel the system is the same, not 1 bit of difference,

Except if you use McAfee Virus Scan or the old Norton -
I think im going to give Avira a whirl

Why do people bother about Memory usage?
Important is CPU usage while working. I don't mind if a AV needs more than 100MB. 2GB RAM is minimum nowadays, 4GB standard on each new computer, so there's plenty left for the OS and other programs. And better the AV software has more informations stored in the RAM, so it does not have to access the HDD too often.
I don't like the idea of having a 8MB large AV process running in the background which has to access the HDD each time I load a file, because it has to read the virus definitions each time.
More important is the scanning speed. -
Norton Internet Security:
2,444K + 1,524K = 3968K
On idle, without opening the main window. -
Yeah, I moved from NOD32 to Avira because I was noticing the huge amount of RAM v4 was eating. My subscription ran out, so I changed. Avira uses about 10mb under Vista x64.

My old laptop running as a server has only 1GB (from 512MB) - another old laptop, nowadays with my grandfather has only got 512MB (on XP, its 4,5 years old) - I was thinking of adding more RAM and getting a new HDD for it.
But on such machines RAM usage will matter.
On new laptops with 4GB of RAM (of which you can use 3-3,5) it doesn't really matter how much memory your AV uses.
Also, some people will use just an anti virus, others will use a full security suite. -

Thanks for making this thread and posting your feedback, I like to know more about Security Software and Security overall for Computers, it has been my favorite subject when it comes to computers ever since I started using them!
