Bitdefender Total Security 2017. It is not free, but this software is WELL worth it!

I use MSE/Defender and have no problem. What one should ask is do you click on dark sites if you do then regardless what A/V you have it will not protect you. I only use MSE/Defender it's free if you already have Windows and a big plus it turns on your Windows Update of which no other A/V can do to further protect your O/S. So take it for what it is worth. -

No dark sites, matter of fact we have the router set up to help prevent going to the dark side since we have a kid. Some people turn defender off due to microsoft long reach in gathering personal info. I will double check that to be sure. -

Windows Defender is one of the heaviest AVs out there. See: http://chart.av-comparatives.org/chart1.php?chart=chart4&year=2016&month=10&sort=1
It's the first thing I disable in Windows 10 once I install it. Heck, I have a Software folder which contains a custom icon for each folder. If Windows Defender was turned on, those icons would load in slow motion one by one if WD was enabled.
For paid, I recommend ESET NOD32, for free, I recommend Avast! but custom install it and remove all the bloatware, just install the virus shield and webshield (optional) -

And you think other A/V aren't doing more themselves-this is hypocrisy in real time. Kids are far smarter then you think nowdays-I see first hand my nephews and nieces so don't think just cause you set the router they won't learn to go around it when they get older. If one doesn't password block the Admin/Owner account from being used other then for software updates and create one for Limited user so even if they get out they can't install or do more damage and you can delete the account and still protect the system. And also another thing when using the Admin/Owner account disable the "AutoRun" feature this will further insure there is no one can "Auto Install" something they shouldn't install. -
