Every time I try to do a full system scan, it crashes and Vista says it stops responding. I always get an error window with (3038,107) at the bottom, which on Google searches leads me to a lot of complaints of NIS2008 & Vista SP1 not working well.
Any solutions? Other than to get another AV product?

1. Why are you using Vista?
2. Why are you using Norton?
3. Norton comes preinstalled on many Vista SP1 computers, and I've not heard about anything going wrong. -
Try completely removing Norton and using something else to see if the same problem occurs. That would be my best suggestion.

1) Because I was experimenting with MCE & business features and didn't want to fork the money over for an OEM XP MCE that wouldn't work on my next PC. Vista for $35 @ Purdue.
2) Because I've never had an infection (well, one) in the last five years with Norton.
3) Well, you've heard something now.
I did a complete reinstall, no luck. Right now I'm doing a scan with Avira AntiVir, but I'm not exactly familiar with the suite and don't exactly trust it yet. Norton usually stops stuff dead in its tracks if somehow it gets past me and tries to install.
Hmmm...I'm not the only one. -
Have you tried either of these two things:
http://service1.symantec.com/suppor...sf&view=0&pid=2007090623205479&pkb=norton2008
I'd try the Symantex fix first, then go with the other one. Although I doubt it's the case, make sure you're fully updated.
Edit: Took down link to second fix because it didn't work. -
I don't exactly like the idea of disabling some of the scan...so I tried the other method first (you know, the one that involves deleting files).
Don't do that one. You'll permanently hose NIS2008.
No luck...yet, but I've got to get sleep. -
That sucks. I'll take down the link to that one. It looks like the only option is the one Symantex recommends. I haven't come across another fix.
About Avira, it's one of the best antivirus programs and the best free antivirus program. Avira had a 99.6% detection rate and Norton 2008 had a 97.7% detection rate. As a side note, I'm pretty sure Avira's paid and free version have the same scanning engine.

I'm still suspicious of free programs
...

They do have a paid version as well which recently scored very well for active protection in addition to it's high scanning results.
-
FYI...but undoing the compressed file scan worked. Not that I'm happy about it...NIS2008 needs to fix that quickly.
-
Update...it does not work again. Darn.
I'm now registered with Norton's community forums, we'll see how this goes.
But I'm thinking I might be switching AV very soon if this isn't fixed.
Anyone? Vista & Norton 2008 Issues?
