I had to stop the web shield because pages just wouldn't load.
Is there any way to fix this while still being protected?

AVs shouldn't be cyber nannies and put their executables all over your computer slowing it down.
You should be responsible for safe surfing.
Google itself has web blacklisting when you use their search engine(as if any other search engines were usable). -
I'll be going back to MSE when I reformat but currently my computer is all messed up and I've gotta reformat anyways for my new HDD whenever that gets here.

I use Avast also and have no problems with it at all.
But to answer your question, Yes, you can turn off the web shield in your settings. It is an optional component and you have to tick the box to turn it on, as it is 'inactive' as standard.
As for staying protected; common sense should suffice.

What happened to your no av test?
Anyways, you can remove the web shield via the change in the uninstaller -
Hungry Man are you on the latest version (6.0.1000)?
I have all 8 shields runninig on a 5 year old dell with 2 gig ram and VISTA and have not seen any perf. issues with IE8..
Have you tired removing the app completely and doing a fresh install? -
It ended. I went for quite a while without an AV and didn't detect anything... but I put MSE on as soon as I was convinced that it was useless lol
edit: I was just trying it out before reformatting. I'm back on MSE now. I was just curious. -
I am also using Avast and it has no issue.

I haven't tried it again. It may have been a fluke/ bad install. Sticking with MSE, which fits my needs much better.

avast pro here with no problems at all using firefox.
only problem ive had in the last year was when we was all affected by the false positive a few weeks ago and that was a one off. -
I was using Avast for some time (am using MSE again) and did not experience any issues performance-wise.
ALTHOUGH, Avast DID suffer a bit of a 'meltdown' rather recently with a bad definitions update which rendered web browsing useless (it would flag perfectly fine websites as infected), though that was solvable by switching off Web Shield (which is ON by default as far as I know). -
Had all shields on and browsing was good, I've deactivated some now as I never use them and they would just be a bother.
Avast killing web performance
