The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
Avast for sure. AVG is a bit heavy on the system resources and the protection isn't that great, multiple times trojans and viruses got through on my old computer and it was a joke because once my norton (had a free subscription) would find and delete the virus then avg would say later a virus was detected and that it couldn't find it (duh it was terminated) and I was like wtf? So avast it is for me and has been working flawlessly.
-
wat about running BOTH... lol which is actually wat im doing rite now... considering ill just uninstall the other one wen ichoose... or maybe leave them both. Its not rele, noticeably killing resources either...
i shud add that option to the poll... BOTH -
I have not used AVAST but I use AVG for virus and spyware protection and it works great. It uses reasonable amount of memory on my Windows XP desktop, and even less on my laptop.
-
btw, i use avast because i like its automatic update options better. -
I've used both AVG and Avast and haven't had any problems. However, if I had to pick one, definitely Avast. It just seems like it does a much better job and picks up things AVG doesn't. I like to have two just so they can double check each other. You'd be safe using either one though.
-
well... thats wat i figure... i guess ill stick with both for now... and see if any problems arise.
-
I like AVG because its so resource friendly and it picks up viruses way faster than paid programs like norton and mcafee ever do. i strongly advise AGAINST having two virus scanners installed on the machine.
Not soo sure about those complaining about updates, avg updates just about everyday for me. Atleast 3X weekly. -
AVG updates for me almost everyday it seems, and takes about 2-5 minutes in doing so. It is resource friendly and does not cause any interference or annoyance.
I too strongly advise against having two virus/spyware protection softwares on your computer because they will conflict with one another. -
why is every1 so Anti-2-antivirus programs? the worst that can happen is wen i go to a website with a virus, ill get two messages telling me about the virus. the real test is to go to a website with a virus and see if only ONE tells me about it. thats wen ill know which is rele doing its job. i dont rele go to any bad websites that would have viruses anyway... so its not a big deal.
-
Avast and AVG are both good, I would pick AVG because it updates regulary and has a better interface.
-
Well, I'll be running NOD32. But that opens the question for me, where does nod32 stand up against most antivirus software? I've alway's heard that they were among the best.
-
I'm an AVG fan myself. I don't know about the guy who said it was resource intensive because I never notice it's even running
Could be that it's because I'm comparing it to the horror that is Norton
-
AVG for me. I like the fact that I have it scheduled to update everyday at a a certain time (when its incredibly likely my laptop will be on). I also like the interface and it doesn't appear to be too resource hungry. Task manager lists physical memory usage at roughly 25MBs which in a system with 2.5GB of ram isn't too shabby at all
-
Avast basically Updates every other day too. And the "Virus Database has been updated" Voice never gets old for the cool factor.
-
JabbaJabba ThinkPad Facilitator
Avast updates automatically just about every day.
In any case, both are quite good programs - especially considering that they are free. -

Go AVG, it detected a virus no other AVs other than KAV could detect.
I have the virus file saved, if you the Avast supporters are so confident in it and want to give it a try. lol -

It has actually been several years since I have seen a virus on any of my machines, and that one was in a Word attachment.
Far more common these days are SpyWare, both embedded in website pages and spuriously downloaded to the PC. For this reason, I consider having a robust firewall, that is easily configurable for both incoming and outgoing internet traffic to be an essential, in fact, more essential than standard AntiVirus blocking/detecting software.
Second to a robust firewall for me is a strong AntiSpyware blocker/detector in case the firewall does allow something in.
A distant third in my usage is AntiVirus blocking/detecting software. Just in case.

my comp company just sent me a copy of PC-cillin Internet Security 2007, umm... any1 have any experience with it? i mean, u do normally have to pay for it. but that doesnt rele mean its betta than AVG or Avast.
-
How about none? I have AVG but honestly I rebuilt my PC a month ago with clean Vista and did not run anything for a while.
AKAJohndoe...I went to that link....man that is alot of work and seems like total overkill. Do you sit right behind your cable or DSL modem with your PC? Do you surf hacker or porn sites? Do you let all of your mail marked as spam from your mail provider come down to your inbox..and then open it?
I leave defender and autoupdates on. The only thing extra I run is cccleaner to kill my temp files and my cookies...in case I loose my notebook.
I will read these posts everyonce and a while when on XP and even Vista and then download a bunch of stuff (spybot, adaware) or load up my copy of Symantec Corprate AV 10.2 and scan my system with each....and I never find anything save for a few cookies that I recently got.
I honstly dont think AV is needed if your not doing risky things on your PC. My mail is popped down from google and I leave the crap it thinks is crap on the server. -
Avast FTW.
Antivir for the backup. -
PCcillin, apparently is a very good software that you pay for. and considering i was given the copy for free... i mine as well use it. It also MADE me uninstall AVAST and AVG... so... ill use this for the next year... see how it is... close thread
-
LOL. This guy posts that link to just about every thread he comes into. -
AKAJohnDoe Mime with Tourette's
With all the duplication of this topic in so many different threads/posts it seems to apply to many of them, so I refer to it. I suppose others could search beforehand, too. -
@ AKAJohnDoe
If your PC is actually inside the coffee machine in your avatar I will be mighty impressed. -
NOD32 - $40 very well spent.
-
Well Firewalls and Spyware sweepers should be your first line of defense. I've never had a virus on any of my systems either (though on the old 386s we used in my freshman programming class back in 99 we had the Ripper virus that someone had introduced
)
If you keep your system secure and remain alert to what's out there then hopefully you won't ever get infected to begin with. -

WELL....
I installed Avast on my system last night and guess what it finds.... nothing. amazing considering my current setup is running with $160 worth of Symantec gear. guuuhhh. :confused2: At least it's doing what it's suppose to, it just uses so many damn system resources that the ancient turd my system is right now acts even more ancient. I'm keeping what I paid for on there until it's term is up, then I'm switching to the free ish on that thing.
I can't wait to get my new system in. 1 more week....1....more....week...hopefully... -
the best option in my opinion is kaspersky, and a hardware firewall of some sort to have only the ports currently in use open (I use openbsd)....they arent hard to setup, but kaspersky is the best anti-virus imo if you even need it.
I dont allow browsers to save cache, it gets deleted before I close out a browser and I dont visit many questionable sites. I clean out my registry manually, and I let kaspersky catch everything else. -

Using avast! right now. It has 64bit support as i'm using 64bit Vista.
I hate the busy interfaces of any security suites, so i generally avoid them. -
i was using AVG but picked up lots of crap from using it. now I bought an OEM version of kaspersky and all is well. much better.
-
I installed both and decided to stay with AVG; i noticed avast to be more resource hungry, especially at startup; and way too many options
avg updates everyday for me and i never even notice it running -
AVG because my system is a bit old
-
Avast is more tweakable then AVG, you can reduce how much protection you want with Avast making it lighter on system resources aswell.
Used to use AVG, not anymore. -
Well this seems to be split right down the middle.
-
AVG for me!
-
I tired Avira. But it was too intrusive and it didn't update as fast as AVG. AVG is my favourite.
-
I use Avira Antivir but i'll be looking into AVG when 8.0 comes out.

Hi.
why does AVG free, do a scan before checking for new updates, seems stupid to me.
Also i got AVG professional for free at Christmas, but i still use AVG free, as i cannot see any real difference.
