So I downloaded and installed Avira (free version) the other day. It seemed to be going fine (well, it gave me some issues installing, but installed fine after a reboot) until last night, when while I was surfing the net, a popup ad for Avira came up out of nowhere. Does this happen for anyone else? Should I be concerned about if I have a legitimate copy or if it is some malware-laden fake? (I downloaded it from a site that looked like the legit Avira site I found from googling.) Is there a way to verify it is legit? Am I concerned for no good reason?![]()

The free version has one ad pop-up per day. Basically, it advertises for itself in the hopes that you'll pay for it. You can disable the nag screen using this method: http://www.elitekiller.com/files/disable_antivir_nag.htm

thank you! was wondering how to disable that

To be more precise, pop-up only occurs when it updates new definitions.

And new definitions are released each day

Fantastic. Thanks for the tip. It woud be nice if they mentioned, in big, bold, red text before you download that this thing would give you a popup once a day. Kinda dirty for software that is supposed to help fight crap like random popups.

Some people have automatic definition updating disabled.
