I run Avira 9 on my Windows 7-based laptop and love it. However, my older desktop is more like "everyone's" computer than mine exclusively, and I wasn't always the one in charge of making software and setup decisions. It's currently got McAfee and Spy Sweeper as antivirus programs, which are irritating and laggy and generally unpleasant.
My question is, is it safe to put Avira on this as well? (edit: I mean as well as my laptop, deleting the current programs. I know not to keep all three!) It's running Windows XP, so I'm just wondering if there would be any compatibility or function issues at all. I don't think so, but I thought it'd be best to ask first.
Also, should I download something like Windows Defender as well?

I have avira installed on my Xp notebook. no problems.
I don't know about win defender. -
You dont need Windows Defender. I never heard of anyone say that they saw Defender catch even a single malware!
Your all set for real-time anti-virus and anti-spyware just with Avira. And it runs super light.
If your want an on-demand scanner, you could install Malwarebytes Antimalware. -
You might need to include SUPERAntispyware as On-Demand Scanner too.
In addition, you can add SpywareBlaster to your System because it does not even need to run a Single Process(0 resources usages) to protect your System. Also known as Passive protection.
Windows Defender(99.99% pointless) can be turned off safely if you have a AV/IS installed.
