Avira vs. Avast

Ironic that running the Norton uninstaller would prevent Avira from working.

 

great find...I posted about this issue but nobody linked me to this. Just got rid of AVG and put on Avira...works great!

I recently switched to Avira, a bit slow in the scan but found a blumblebee, that others could not. No lag when not scanning. Newer versions of some older favorites really hog. AVG has become a hog.

If you are looking for the best possible protection my top recommendation is Avira AntiVir Personal Edition Classic [1]. Although its detection rate is outstanding there are some reservations. First it lacks email scanning; this is only available in the paid version. That means that AntiVir won't warn you about any infected emails before you open them. However should you open an infected email then AntiVir will still spring into action, so not having an email scanner doesn't mean you are not protected from email based infections. My second reservation is that AntiVir is quite an intrusive product - you will certainly be well aware of its presence. Finally AntiVir Personal Edition Classic has a time limited license. It is renewable but be aware you will have to periodically go through the hoops.

If you not prepared to accept the drawbacks to AntiVir I would suggest either AVG Antivirus 7 Free Edition [2] or the Avast! scanner [3]. Neither is quite as effective in detection as AntiVir however they are both more complete products and less intrusive in use.

i've got "HTML/Crypted.Gen" virus, a troyan, as Avira says, and i moved it into quarantine. So, what should i do with it? there are options:
- Restore object
- Delete object
- Restore object to
- delete

What one to choose to remove this virus?

P.S: it is my first time i catched virus (as previously was on mac), so, apologize for dummy question.

Why are there two delete options? I would say "delete object" but what the heck does the other delete do?

 

Calvin, it was my mistake.. there is only one delete button, so i'll now perform it.

I've just got something i don't know what: i'm exploring inet, 6 firefox windows opened, and suddenly i've got a small pop up window with following text: "oops!"
What it may be? i've just perfomed a system scan by Avira and no viruses found.

I wanna say that i'm very, very pleased with Avira, it's great, no system hog, light on resources, quick system scan. Also it's cool when after an update avira's umbrella(icon in tray) opens, stating that system is protected. Before that there were NIS 07, Avast!. on my system.

Also i turned off Windows Security components: Win.Defender and Firewall( i have Russian ver. of Vista, here it is called Brandmauer), and could someone give a tip how to disable it completely, especially Win.Firewall, as for Defender i remember that there is a tip to do it on the forum.

 

What i did is to go to msconfig and disable the services, and make sure they don't get turned on at startup.

 

I am also considering switching to Avira.

I installed Avast! on my new Compaq laptop (C768TU with 2.5GB RAM) and it runs like a dog with Avast resident protection enabled.

However, I am concerned that the free edition of Avira may not be as feature-rich as Avast! (in terms of on-demand scanning etc). I currently use ESET Smart Security on my desktop, but I may transfer it to this PC (the laptop) if I find I use this more than my desktop.

Still not sure what to do in that regard.

 

What do you mean by feature rich in terms in on-demand scanning? According to security results, Avira uses a better scanning engine than avast!.
