I have an unusual Vista problem. My desktop fails to load sometimes and I need to log off or reboot to make it load properly. Some people say this is due Symantec. After months of troubleshooting and no joy I tried a different AV. I used BitDefender Total Security 2009 and it had tons of bugs on 64. Console would not load and it hogged my system badly. 5 minutes boot, 5 reboot, the BitDefender icon would show up, would not, etc.
I would like an advice on an AV or Security suite. Something light and good. I am looking at KIS 2009 and Avira. Any other suggestions?
Bear in mind that I changed Symantec because it would not let go of the registry when Vista was rebooting and I was having a corrupt desktop afterwards. I don't want to install something like this ...again.

Bitdefender security suite is a resource hogger. Use a free alternative.

personally i was literally shocked.... floored.... when i tried the new nis2009 version its THAT MUCH better than last year. but ...
i will always recc kis2009 its a awesome and very light program, avira suite is also a great full suite though the firewall from my tests is not as good as kis is..
i also personally like dr web. dr web is a little known program to many people and is a great overall av its light and works awesome.. maybe something to check out -
I found that the latest NIS Gaming Edition works on 64. Seems very light on its feet. Will test for two weeks then buy it.

NIS2009 should run well under Vista 64 bit.
I've just checked the Symantec forum and according to this post the only 64-bit issues remaining are;
1. Context menu scanning support.(Right-click on a file/folder and Scan option)
2. SONAR - Symantec Online Network for Advanced Response. (You can opt for Norton AntiBot along with NIS 2009 since SONAR isn't supported in 64-bit)
3. Norton Product Tamper Protection.
4. Phishing protection feature available only on 32-bit Explorer in Vista 64-bit.
If you would like to give NIS2009 another try (I assume you've paid good money for it), you should first remove any traces of a current install with the Norton Removal Tool.
You will have to run it, reboot, run it again, reboot again, download and run the latest NIS2009 installer (run as administrator, just to be safe).
That ought to do the job.
(Some older versions of the NRT were responsible for messing up the Vista registry, this has been solved by now).
If Symantec is no-go for you, I'd advise to check out KIS2009 and Avira's suite.
Download trial versions first and give them a good run before purchasing.

Thanks for the reply. I installed the latest NIS Gaming from their website and installation was very fast. Less than 40 seconds. Shocking for a Norton product. I've no issue with it so far. It even deletes tracking cookies
. Anywho, I will avoid security suites for now. They hog computers and I don't want that. I got all my Creative Junk loading at startup, don't need another heavy app killing my machine. I will never use Bitdefender again. I used to love their software. 5 minutes boot with Total Security? Gimme a break...
Bear with me ...
