I use Kaspersky exclusively on all 5 of our household computers. It's a solid, non-intrusive app and can usually be found relatively cheap via sales or coupon codes for 3-license versions.

However, I did decide to pick up the latest Norton, which was on sale, based on recent recommendations here. Prior to Kaspersky I was a Norton user but did find things to get slow and resource heavy over the years. But I do agree, the new NIS 2009 is a very good app and works extremely well with Vista. I have since gone back to recommending Norton (& Kaspersky) to my family & friends.

the best is nod32, referring to av tests and av comparatives and factoring in heuristics .. false positives.. and resource usage + compatability

i did a lot of research into this, the top contenders currently are nod32, kaspersky, norton 2009, and.. i think mcafee (not sure)

avira may have the highest detection rates, but when you consider its false positives.. you can see that the quality of its definitions are not up to par with the ones above

I haven't got the link - its in the security forum - anti virus comparison.

McAffee did score high in the test - but to my knowledge its a resource hog...

    Slow barely useable computer.

Good equals - not really noticeable or only when you time it with a stopwatch.

I don't notice any slowdown from Kaskersky for example.

No slowdown with Norton either, except when installing live updates.

Although a little dated (late Dec 08) this maximumPC article should help some here. Of course there have been changes since (like newer and improved versions of most apps) but it's still an interesting read. Their top two picks at the time of the article were Norton and ESET, which happen to be two of the four award winners in the latest Feb 09 comparatives.

i only use the AVG and Norton .
these are the best anti virus software's which i always use in my computer.

the performance of the avg is very good it detects the threads and delete it .

    that's why it is costly.
you can use the mcafee, Norton 2009 and avg .

randdy... for sure you know that using 2 antiviruses on one computer is NOT recommended (if you don't know how to install one without the resident protection)? your system may get unstable, not mentioning that none of both antiviruses would work properly because of conflicts of their resident parts.

I used 2 AVs side by side before, reason being was one came with the spyware/malware protection built in.

Never had any unstability issues, but did throw a curve here and there when one reported virus, and the other one did not :D

Nowadays one is enough for sure.

    cheers ...

Do you have both installed in their standard configuration?
Or have you tweaked the settings of one of the AV's.
    Just curious... ;)

Running two AV's real time protection together reduces your system performance.

I didn't even know you could run 2 at the same time. I recall Norton or windows asking which to use as the default firewall, so if your running AVG AND Norton that would give you trifecta firewall options??
