I will not be using the current version of comodo firewall anymore until they fix some of the bugs in it. Yesterday I decided to try comodo again after suffering a drive-by download of a trojan  don't know where it came from as I am usually very careful while I am online.

Anyway long story short comodo locked down my notebook to the point that I couldn't even get onto my wireless, it also caused windows to freeze for several minutes at a time; it also asked me to allow task manager I don't know how many times (each time I told it to remember the settings and it didn't). Eventually it got so bad that I had to do a hard shut down and uninstall it in safe mode. Then I had the problems that others had before with security center still seeing the firewall even though it was uninstalled. Well I followed one of johndoe's posts and I finally got comodo removed from the notebook. This entire experience was very unpleasant so I won't be using comodo until a new version comes out.

Well In theory not using D+ should avoid the permissions problem.

Well after a week, it's gone!
I got locked out of Control Panel/Security, was not allowed to run msconfig, and then some...
The intent is great but the execution is poor. I know that people will blame MSFT, but developers have had over 2 years to come up with decent stuff...Back to Vista Firewall!

So... is there anyone here still using CFP? If so, what are your thoughts.

Apparently there are many satisfied users. I guess it's not much different than the problems found here with computers in general.

Ogen: Have you tried any other firewalls? When I said you should try a good firewall, I wasn't really talking about the new Comodo.

After V3 and finding Online Armor, I don't think I'll go back to Comodo. Even if they fix the problems, I still like OA more.

Why would that be? If the updated CFP doesn't pay nice with my system, I'll most likely try OA. Have you found any bugs in OA?

There's only one bug right now and according to OA's forums, the company knows about it and is trying to fix it. The problem occurs when running a browser and bit-torrent at the same time. What happens is that both lose internet speed and load/download much slower. However, a work around which I think I've found fixes it. It's not a technical one or anything special. What I do is: start a torrent, then I open my web browser. If it loads the home page normally, it's fine and will work at regular speed. If it doesn't load it fast, then I close and re-open the browser until it does. After a few times it usually regains its top speed. It's a slight hassle, but I don't download that much anyway.

Right now I don't see any reason at all to switch back to Comodo. I like the menus more, less resources (though Comodo isn't that bad usually), less pop-ups, better firewall rating, set-up was a breeze, pretty much everything about it seems better (though in some areas only slightly better). It's a firewall that I can install and, for the most part, forget about it.

Difference is Comodo is a WINALL app. The free OA version is XP only. The full version is billable.

Actually, I found out during installation of the updated V3, that "basic" lowers defense checking in the image execution control settings. I originally thought it only installed the firewall, without D+. It's still active.

That said, with the exception of a few minor glitches, plus my own learning process, the "fixed" version is working awesomely. It's been two days now and I seldom get a pop up.

I don't believe the release I'm using now will cause serious crashes as AKAJohnDoe and I experienced with the 1st v3 release.

What few minor problems remain that some are having should be fixed in the next week or two.

Hmm that's interesting. When I tried Basic, both were installed. But D+ was disabled in that the module didn't load. CFP showed a smaller memory footprint with it disabled. Oh well. Hopefully all the issued get worked out.

How much of the "anti-PEBKAC" feature set can be turned off in this program?

I guess I'm looking for something similar to the slightly ancient Tiny/Kerio Personal Firewall version 2.x, which allowed me to define a very specific, ordered ruleset with a "block everything" rule at the end (hits on this would be logged) and be done with it. I don't need/want learning modes with annoying popups, included anti-virus/-spyware/-spam/-xyz, intrusion detection and everything else that's being botched into general-purpose "security suites" these days.

Any recommendations would be appreciated :)

You can make your own rule changes and disable the pop ups in Defense +, which monitors memory, and can also be disabled. Right now the version I have (3.14. xxx) is open to any one that registers on the Comodo forum. However, there will be another build out next week.

They were worried it would be picked up by download sites. You want to make sure if it informs you of a update NOT to install. It will revert you back to v3.13 because that's the official public release (with bugs for many including myself). Although I've failed to get one update notice, most have either checked or unchecked in settings.

I guess I should mention it on the Comodo forum.

    it stated correctly 3.0.14.273
. when 1st running it, after download (9.6+MB), it would remove the current installed version
    . reboot
    . run the installer again
    . reboot
. it went thru the learning/setup anew

    cheers ...

    Hi Guys,

We would like to announce the availability of COMODO Firewall Pro 3.0.14.276.

    What is New ?

FIXED! VPN Clients can now connect to VPN servers while CFP is installed
FIXED! cmdagent.exe no longer consumes 100% CPU64 Mb RAM
FIXED! System reboot no longer takes too long when CFP is installed with some other security software, e.g. avast!
FIXED! CFP can now find the application behind a connection (for example Kaspersky web scanner)
FIXED! "System Idle Process" is now changed to "Windows Operating System" to describe application less traffic (So no more "System Idle Process" in CFP)
FIXED! Internet Connection Sharing (ICS): CFP is now compatible with ICS servers (users will be required to answer some popup alerts)
FIXED! System performance has been improved
FIXED! Defense+ no longer allows some applications to modify a protected file if it is not allowed
FIXED! Eliminated 8.3 path conversion and its associated duplicate entries/not remembering my answer problems (e.g. for BOClean or AVG)

An interesting note. When I click on the Comodo website link it opens in Firefox on an IE tab.

    I like that...

What's the word on Comodo? I installed it and a couple other things, spybot-avast-ccleaner and now all vista updates fail when trying to configure. Anyone had this problem after installing the buggy comodo? Not sure if they could be related?

I've given up on comodo because of hearing about all of the problems people had been having. I don't care if they fix this or that, unless people stop complaining about problems i won't try it.

Does anyone know if Defense+ still messes with your file permissions? I installed firewall only during the last big fiasco and sure as sh$t, defense plus turned it self on and wreaked havoc....I'd like to try it again if I could be sure it would leave my file persmissions alone.

Comodo has released an update to the version 3 firewall (version 3.0.15.277).

This update is important for users of vista because apparently the previous build (.276) was causing the latest windows vista updates(January) to fail. The work around before was to uninstall comodo then install the updates and then re-install comodo, disabling it did not work. However this new build does away with the need to do that; after updating to this latest build all of the January updates installed without any problems.

All of this time I thought it was something wrong with my windows installation :( when it was just comodo.

Evolution I saw a previous thread about people having problems with the latest MS Update but none mentioned having CFP. So, it could MS and/or CFP alone or together.

I still use AOL software, from time to time, and removed the AOL rules to start over but found I couldn't get online even though FF and IE worked fine. I uninstalled CFP and will be monitoring my system for a few days before I reinstall.

One or two more builds and CFP should be rock solid.

I am one that has had a thread or 2 open about this exact problem. I believe
I did mention in my posts about commodo, spy-bot and avast installs. I also remember specifically asking if these things could cause the problem but understandably no one knew of this until now. I was failing 33 updates everytime and taking 20 minutes to shutdown due to configuring updates. Finally I just deleted the failed updates and shut off auto updater so I could still use the computer. Anyway I'll give this a try this week and see if it helps me out then I'll try to find my thread and update the fix for those searching. THANKS EVOLUTION/HIKER!!! Hope it works.

SillyMan, if you think you're having problems with CFP you may want to check out the Comodo forums (if you haven't done so already). There's a few guys on their that are very helpful. It's easy to blame a number of things on CFP, especially if you tried the 1st release of v3 which had a number of bugs. Some are warranted , some are not.

With D+ you really don't need Spybot Tea Timer active which is very similar and I found buggy in it's own right. Avast users also have a number of questions over there.
