I just got a new laptop with Vista 64 bit and have been looking for some free internet security. Normally I'd just download ZoneAlarms and be good as far as firewall, but they don't have support for 64 bit. Downloaded Avast AntiVirus, and was looking at Commodo Firewall.
The question is: Is Commodo Firewall any good?
Now I don't mean good in general, I mean, Does it keep all the nasty crap out? Not a resource hog?
And was wondering about the complaints that it was hard to uninstall and that it crashed systems and made them shutdown slow. Any input would be great.
and any recommendations for free firewalls, antivirus', and antispywares is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I am using Comodo on my Vista x64 install and it is working well. Check this link for tons of info on firewall/security software:

Comodo is solid, really good protection. It got an Editors Choice from PC Mag too. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2704,2236657,00.asp
When V.3 first came out in 07 there were a few issues w/ compatibility but the updates have solved that.
Take a look at the results of this firewall challenge as well:

Only 2 products got slightly higher scores and both of those you have to pay for. -

Yeah I was looking through there earlier, was looking for some more direct criticism. In the meantime I'll keep looking through. -
One more vote for Comodo under Vista. It has come a long way and proves to be solid

While the latest firewall CFP with D+ is stable, the suite CIS with AV, is still in beta.
If for some reason CFP causes problems revo uninstaller in advanced mode should remove all traces. -
exactly - and for a free app, I sure am having everything worth out of it
Can't complain so far.

Actually, my subscription to ZoneAlarm is up for renewal in December, and while I am satisfied, having a few months between now and then affords me the opportunity to evaluate some of the available alternatives relatively risk free. I do not need, nor want, a suite; just a firewall.
Comodo is on my short list of firewalls to try out. Not all that near the top, but on there. Here is my short list:
- ZoneAlarm AntiVirus (ZAAV)
- Look'n'Stop
- Outpost
- Online Armor
- Blink (Personal / Professional)
- Comodo
Sorry if your personal favorite is not on the list, but it is my list after all! -

Oddly enough I haven't heard of those.
Care to share what makes them better or worse then Comodo.
I haven't used Comodo, just heard a bit about it. And apparently its pretty close to ZoneALarms which was my favorite when I was using XP32
-
Also I'm installing Comodo, should i enable Defense+ -

I really cannot share anything until after I have tried them myself. And what I find may or may not apply to you, your situation, or your preferences, so you might want to try them yourself.
I have them listed in the order in which I expect them to fall out in the end; however, the evaluation is the real determining factor. -

Ah thanks anyway.
Yeah I installed Comodo with Defense+ and was expecting to have my computer crash or something terrible (pessimist
). Pleasantly surprised, works well. I actually like it alot. It's alot like the ZoneAlarms free firewall I use on my desktop with XP 32.
Asks when something happens if it's ok etc.
I'm thinking between COMODO Firewall and avast! I should be pretty good as far as virus protection goes. I'll fill in the holes as I go.
My biggest problem is that I told it to block something by accident and I'm trying to figure out how to unblock it. -
With Comodo it's really quite easy. You open the GUI go to either D+ or Firewall, advanced security policies, click on the program in question, remove rule. Try again.
As long as you refrain from using the isolated or limited application in D+ until you know the program better it's hard to mess up. -
I absolutely love Comodo v2 for XP, but v3 for Vista is kind of a pain to work with in my opinion. Works good, I think.. just too much going on with the D+ and "view active connections" should be one click away like v2.
Curious about free internet security (Comodo, etc)
