If so, why and which ones do you use ?

No, the only one I use is CCleaner's. I used to use them but have stopped and not noticed any difference since.
-
This is something I'm having a rethink over. I used CC in the past, can't say it did any harm, but I really wonder over all this.
I have run CC over a fresh clean install image of Vista and it shows registry problems. Are they problems ? or items that may be needed in future ?
I have a fresh install of Vista and haven't put anything like this on it this time. I will benchmark the system and see how it fares over time.
I watched a compelling Microsoft video a few months back and the evidence (yes I know they would say that) was compelling for leaving the registry alone. -
CCleaner is actually cleaning out useless, unusable, buggy, corrupted or spoiled registry entries. These registry entries are very safe to be remove and it won't be use anymore in the future at all, that's why CCleaner is removing them.
Well, CCleaner did not give performance boost significantly. However, when you face registry problems such as ".dll not found, need to close blah blah", then, you will see CCleaner is so useful on fixing them. -
I only use CCleaner...I run it every Saturday out of habit...that's when I run my complete AV scan, etc. Saturday is my maintenance day per se.
I can't say I've noticed a tremendous difference.

Usually when I uninstall and reinstall applications(for x reason), I normally clean out the registry in case the uninstaller didn't completely finish the job and the old registry entries impede on the new installation(which used to happen to me quite a bit). Normally, that's the only circumstance I'd figure cleaning the registry to be "useful".
Other than that, it's mostly just cleanup if you're using CCleaner. -
Ccleaner is a basic cleaner yet effective. Ive had problems with software re-installs a couple of times, a registry sweep fixed it. There are better registry cleaners but they can be more invasive and could cause your system to stop working.
Depends on which type of registry entries. -

Aside from CC Cleaner, you can also try MISPBO Registry cleaner. Compared to other ordinary registry cleaners, MISPBO has a registry defrag that is a recommended action to do after you clean-up your registry. The registry defrag requires you to boot-up and display the increased speed of your notebook in percentage ratio after the registry frag. Check this site: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Registry-Tweak/MISPBO-Registry-Cleaner.shtml
Moreover, I sought assistance regarding registry cleaners from an IT guy and he referred me to download a unique free error repairer and cleaner called IOBit System Care and IOBit Security 360 that both fix browser crashes, errors, registry, antimalware, antispyware, anti-adware, anti-Trojan, anti-bots, and other related system malfunctions which may also be obtain through downloads of file transfers. IOBit does not create conflict with any anti-virus, it is actually the best mate you can pair up with your anti-virus.
Furthermore, IOBit offers a nice user-interface similar to NIS 2008 Internet Security. I say it's better. But having the two gives you the best of both worlds
Try checking these sites for detailed info:

I think there is an OS question too....
XP - maybe
Vista - generally no. -
Since XP registry cleaners are redundant because NT architecture keep the registry clean.
A few stray entries may be left behind after uninstallation but it doesn't hurt.
Also uninstaller are suppose to remove whatever traces they make on the registry on their own according to microsoft guidelines some follow while some don't. -
...well... you definitely could completely fill the XP registry with junk...
-
I do it very rarely when I remember to do so, but I can't say I've ever seen any performance difference whatsoever.
The biggest consequence I found was that CCleaner supposedly found errors in my Thinkpad UltraNav drivers, and "fixed" them. The UltraNav control panel then kept crashing until I reinstalled it. Now, I just have to remember to untick anything related to UltraNav and Synaptics. -
I think I found that CCleaner deleted an icon for Garmin Mapsource. I placed Garmin in excluded, under options.
Also, I've been using Glary Utilities on occasion, which seems to clean a little deeper than CCleaner, but it hasn't caused any problems as yet. -
Glary also has a registry defragmenter, do you use that ?
-
I only use CCleaner as a registry cleaner.
Never heard of Glary Utilities O_O But it's a registry cleaner and defragmenter... Wow! -

but it doesn't change the files much as they are several of them, users have individual hives and don't get affected by the other ones, and the whole thing is nicely indexed for fast access, so even while there can be tons of junk, that doesn't affect the access time much.
that's what people don't really get.
and with vista, it got even better. there you can really fill the registry how much you want, it doesn't really matter. -

Glary and MISPBO has registry defragmentation features. Of course, you can use that
Try that feature when you're about to shut down your PC. For MISPBO, it takes about 1 minute for a complete registry defrag which displays the speed ratio your notebook has gained after doing the registry defragmentation. Afterwhich, it asks you to restart your PC. Click yes and presto, you can actually feel the speed your notebook has gained
Try checking the newest version of MISPBO here
and Glary here
*BOTH registy repair and cleaner are free so ease your payment worries...

I did a registry clean up with MISPBO, after that I try to run registry defrag BUT it says "Registry defrag is finished, you want to boot up"
How can registry defrag be finished before I even run it ? -
comrade_commissar7 Notebook Evangelist
-Right after you choose (by clicking the assigned button) to registry defrag your notebook or pc, it will temporarily pause/freeze all your applications while the loading takes place. After less than a minute, you will be asked to bot-up your pc after displaying "Registry defrag is finished, you want to boot up".
-you should restart your pc in order for the complete effect of registry defragmentation to take place. The displated ratio is accurate which will only take effect after boot-up.
-That's what I do and works perfectly fine for me. -
I still use it to remove broken references within registry. As far as difference in performance? Nah, and I don't pay attention to it.
cheers ... -
Registry cleaners are a bit like a carwash, stains and dirt are removed.
Your ride looks better and maybe even 'feels' better.
Only a serious amount of dirt would actually slow down your car. -
nice analogy !

With vista, i would run ccleaner registry cleaner regulary. But now that I use Windows 7, I have heard of bad things about ccleaner registry cleaner (like breaking the right-click context menu, etc), so I don't use it anymore.
-
I used CCleaner on Windows 7 and it works flawlessly.
Maybe you're using slightly older CCleaner, the current version CCleaner should work with Windows 7. -

I always keep it up to date.

I use Auslogics BoostSpeed
And here I have (BTW I have more options but this is what I daily use):
Auslogics Disk Cleaner (Clean up disk drivers and get rid of junk files)
Auslogics Registry Cleaner (Clean up the Windows Registry and fix registry errors)
Auslogics Disk Defrag (Boost performance by defragmenting disk drives)
Auslogics Registery Defrag (Compact and defragment the registry to speed up your system)
I always run those 4 before I shut down my laptop and go to sleep. This is not the Qosmio. I have an HP lappy wich I use at school and it is very important that this machine gives no errors ect. (Not seen anyone either). Using Auslogics BoostSpeed with Windows Vista Home Premium x64 (same as my Qosimo). It also works great with Windows7, I have tried it
Do you need registry cleaners ?
