    Thread Name Updated:

Do you use a Third Party Firewall?

This poll does not count Windows built in Firewall, only a Third Party Firewall.

Just a question I wanted to ask people.

I have never used one, and find them really annoying when they give constant messages about something (at least with my experience).

If you use one, which do you use? And why?

    If you don't, why not?

Norton has no message at all. DecaffeinatID is good for detecting arp spoofing.

I suppose everybody uses the windows firewall unless they choose to disable it so a poll is pointless, unless you are talking about a third party firewall.

I use to use a third part firewall comodo it was called , but it would ask all the time for permission to let software connect to the internet, but i did not know what 90% of the flagged software was, so i could not tell whether i should block it or not.

My DSL/CABLE router is my firewall. No need for any software as it isn't required if you have a router.

    Aikksssss... Wrong Vote...
I suppose to Press NO. But, mistakenly pressed YES. :(

3rd Party Firewall is useless. You're not VIP or anyone like President or Governors or Superstars. No one will hack your PC. Windows Firewall will do. Solid enough already.

Windows Firewall is not that good at all. Many holes. Like any software firewall.

If you're referring to W7 it's firewall security is greatly improved over previous version and one of the new OP best selling points. Many people use it past and present in lieu of a third party application.

Haha. No discriminating intended. I was just curious on how many people are using a Third Party Firewall, as opposed to Windows Firewall/Router. :D

I used to use Comodo Firewall, but got tired of setting permissions for things all the time, especially after a clean install. I have been using Windows Firewall since I installed Windows 7 and it's been working fine for me. So, I voted "no".

And I updated the thread title and poll question ;)

For XP machines, I use Comodo, any OS more recent, I just use the Windows Firewall and stick behind my hardware firewall(be it my router's or Cisco switches).

    I use Comodo because...

    • It's free
    • It's light/fast
    • I'm not always on my home/protected network
    • It can (to some degree) detect ARP poisoning

    I do use a third-party Firewall, Comodo.

For the last 2 years that I have been using Comodo, I have no complaints so far, however, the "Set up permissions on event." system may get annoying, but once configured, you may port-over your permissions to another computer / operating system with a configuration file.

Well-Configured, the freeware version of Comodo is a nice contender to other commercial Firewall solutions, and may even surpass them on a lot of areas, quite surprising for a freeware solution if you ask me.

Comodo passes the "Shields Up!" test nicely with a perfect punctuation, it works nicely on its own with very little configuration done on the Router, plus, it has a specialized module for protection from DoS attacks.

It has lots of nice options that you may configure to your liking and it may adapt to your needs, plus, its OS (Operative System) Firewall is pretty good, better than even Zone Alarm's OS Firewall (I was a Zone Alarm user for 4 years before than using Comodo) and is a much better alternative than sticking to Windows' UAC, it does not cause any conflicts if you have a similar program such as SpyBot's TeaTimer.

if you only use a router as a firewall, will that only stop programs getting in?
some program already on you computer, downloaded or from a portable drive could install itself and send stuff out. is that correct?

    Both assumptions are correct. :)

Many routers come with pretty good, integrated firewalls on them (I cannot say the same about the Cable Modem / Router supplied to me by my Cable Internet provider... the Firewall would block trusted programs / connections made from my computer and let incoming, malicious data come inside).

No as they can be turned off while a hardware firewall is way harder to turn off.

In the past I used ZoneAlarm (I was a fan) and still recommend it for my friends that are basic users. Now in my case I tried Comodo more than a year ago and I am still using it.
