    I know how to disable Avira nag but...

    I followed the fix that is posted all over the net and:
    • disabled permissions for the avnotify.exe file
    • added the /nosplash option in the registry
    • I have "notify me of updates" unchecked in the configuration
    • using 8.5
    .

    I still however get a balloon pop up in the system tray area that there is a new version. Is there any way to disable this?

    An AV application does its job better if its updated in all aspects (signitures and program updates).

    You want to stay up to date, the virus scanner can change with newer versions, which also means it's ability to find and remove virus's.

    Agreed. In addition, newer version is much more stabler and better(detection rate) as well as features.
    It is advisable to update/upgrade to the newest version, unless, the newer version is buggy and have a lot of negative feedbacks.

    i have balloon tips disabled through xp powertoys... no affect.
