It's faster and lighter then NOD32 which isn't even a security suite and it has good detection rates!!
-
I am wanting to try them out again. The Norton I used was sluggish and there were better _free_ alternatives out there.
But people are harping about its performance compared to its older versions. Is this magnified because of the bad press surrounding the older products or is it geniunely that good? -
It's very good. Very good detection rates, you will see it on the top charts in AV Tests as it already has been in the past few tests.
-
What's your memory usage?
-
I'll believe it when I see it.
All those graphics; all that typical Norton "flash, glitz and glitter;" and all of Norton's unnecessary bells and whistles have to come at some cost of resources. -
Yep. I used Norton on my desktop..and I really rather didn't like it.
But, everyone has their own opinion on what AV software they like

Try it if you don't believe me. It's security suite is simply the best.
-
Hey there, I will think about it
I just have a caution flag, when I have had trouble before with a brand..and going back to it and such
I also just dumped Trend Micro..and that was, for me ~ the most horrible AV for my lappy. *nothing but trouble w/it*

So you haven't seen it? Then how do you know about "all those graphics", "all that typical Norton "flash, glitz and glitter;""???
You have no idea what you are talking about, you have no idea about how good and incredibly user friendly the new Norton interface is, you have no idea about how good it has come out in tests (on par with the other leading AV suites out in the world), and for sure, it seems you have no idea about how much of an effect does Norton have on system resources these days (and there is no effect on system resources or performance in the presence of Norton. Its very light!!).
FWIW, Norton is simply awesome these days, there is no glitz or glitter or whatever you claim it to have, very effective, very light on system resources (yes, I am saying it again... on idle, norton takes up hardly 8-9 MB, while scanning its not much either). -
NIS 2008 is pretty amazing as well. It only gets better in 2009.
-
IMO, I would say NIS 2009 is * Very* good. Added to this, their customer support these days, has been spot on and awesome.
-
I have, indeed, heard a lot of very good things about the new NIS. My current protection is more than adequate, but I may take a closer look at NIS in the future.
-
If you want to try it out there is a topic about a 90 day trial. It says it's for lenovo owners but it works on my acer.

I just did an epic fail.
Got my new laptop and like an idiot uninstalled Norton IS 09 thinking it would be poor.
Can't get it back can I? -
What kind of laptop is it? If it's a Dell, you can reinstall it from the Norton Software Disc included with the system. I'm not too sure if other manufacturers provide it on separate disks.
Also, in any case, if you created your "Norton account" your program subscription details are stored there, so you can download it from the internet

^ I agree.
Even if you don't have the disc, if you happen to have the Norton Product Key somewhere (if you have registered in the Norton account, you should find it there). Copy it and then download / install NIS 2009 from the Norton website, enter your product key and you are good to go.
Also, the norton key is stored somewhere in your system, and its in one of the symantec folders. I have it, but right now can't remember the location since I don't have my laptop with me. But I can get you the exact place where it was placed in a couple of hours. -
I may be doing my 2nd fail of the day just looked and it's Norton 360 and it's only a 60day trial.
Thanks for the help and sorry for being a noob. -
That's okay, and BtW, Norton 360 is very well regarded too, so you may still be interested
-
Ok,I'll check it out.
Normally just delete junk and like an idiot didn't bother to study this one a bit.
Just a trial I guess anyway.
Thanks though for the help. -
Yeah, Norton 360 2.0 is supposed to be really good as well. It got great reviews.
-
Norton 2008 was good security, but pretty sluggish, slowed computers a little. NIS 2009, has more features and clearly beats BitDefender, McAffe, ect. and doesnt affect proformance at all.
-
i use AVG and MBAM together, very good, MBAm actually deleted some threats
-
nis2009 refuses to delete a trojan.zlob... reinstalled kis2009 from kaspersky instantly gone..
-
Interesting - I must say that Norton 2006-2008 have made me really skeptical of it as they tended to make computer run slower than molasses in January. Do you know if current Norton 2008 users can upgrade to the newest version for free (i.e. without renewing an ongoing subscription?)? If so I'll have to convince my parents to upgrade their Norton 2008 - probably would be a performance increase comparable to getting a whole new computer.
-
Yes, if you have Norton 2008 with a running subscription, you can upgrade to Norton 2009 for free (either by downloading Norton 2009, and install with your 2008 key or just get onto Norton Chat and they will guide you through!!!) Its pretty easy. You may want to un-install Norton 2008 before installing 2009, with the Norton Removal Tool. Cheers.
-
10000000% use the removal tool with nortons thats almost always a must then run something like ccleaner to remove what the removal tool did not. the 2009 version uninstalls pretty smooth unlike all previous versions
-
Unfortunately, my University makes us access the network through Cisco Clean Access Agent, which the version the University uses doesn't support NIS 2009.
I think they're going to update CCAA over the winter break. -
So Norton is getting their act together again. Good for them and about time too.
-
The best compared to what? Have you tried any others?
-
I've tried, NOD, Kaspersky, CA. It is much better then all of those. Kaspersky is heavy on usages, is buggy, never completes scans, delete known good software ext.
-
^^ no way. i am a kaspersky user as well as a norton user and they are very similar in all ways but imo kaspersky offers more protection and better removal. ive already had nortons refuse to remove a zlob where kaspersky did it instantly. ive seen this now 3 times with a zlob, a vundu, and a trojan downloader. nis2009 refused to remove them. kaspersky did it on one reboot. not knocking nis2009 its FANTASTIC step foward for symantec i mean FAR BETTER than the previous attempts but still needs hips, better hueristics and better removal. but they are 1000% in the right direction. i am also a reseller of both as well byw so i am NOT baised towards one or the other..
-
Kaspersky detected lot's of my Lenovo software as malware ext. Norton did not. Kaspersky scan did not complete in over 4 hours, Norton takes 1 hour.
Just got NIS 2009 and wow!!
