    Looking for a free software that can detect this infected file

    Yesterday I downloaded a free video editing software, so I thought. It turned out to be a virus, which made my computer inoperable even in safe mode. It turned all icons into the WMV icon. The file is here:

    It's in the direct link of the very first file, asfBin.

    Today I downloaded the latest version of AVG and Avast free anti virus software. Both can not detect this virus. They both say no virus is detected after multiple scans. Anything else better out there? Thanks.

    firstly you should only have one antivirus loaded at a time as they conflict with each other.
    i would try this first. download Malwarebytes which is free and run a scan with that. if that shows up nothing then a clean install is next.
    im certainly not going to click the above link to see what it is but my suggestion is to cut your losses and do a total clean reinstall as if nothing shows up in safe mode scan your most prob well and truly buggered.

    asfBin is not a virus, it is most likely a registry setting that was messed up. I've seen this problem before, when someones computer did the same thing, except every file was iTunes

    When installing the program, did it offer a selection for file association?
    Sounds like perhaps a wrong (default) selection as in 'associate all file types with asfBin' was selected.

    When uncertain about a file, you can use an online multi-AV scanner to scan with 20+ AV programs. See sig for links.
