I don't what to say about those people. My computer is running ESS 4 and I have no such problems.

We're running MR4 on a few unmanaged machines and yes it's much better than 3 but it still doesn't compare to the footprint of NIS2009 or ESET ESS 4, both are significantly lighter on resources than SEP.

For unmanaged SEP 11 MR4 MP1A, it uses about 15MB of memory (private working set) at idle. Managed SEP is going to be a fair bit heavier. NIS 2009 is fairly light at about 6MB. For AVG 8.5 free, it uses about 2-3MB of memory (private working set) at idle. It is still lower than NIS 2009. It is about time Symantec wrote a program that did not cripple your computer, but is it too little too late?

If you do not want to pay for AV protection, then AVG is a good lower resource alternative.

Correct me if I'm wrong but you're comparing NIS2009 to AVG 8.5 Free standalone AV and AS? If you compare NIS to AVG Internet Security 8.5, which is more feature-aligned with NIS than AVG Free is, the results would be very different. AVG Internet Security 8.5 was quite the resource hog when I tried it out a couple of weeks ago.

Was just listening to a Leo Laporte TWIT podcast from last month as I was lifting today, and a guy called in talking about downloading the newest ESET program (I am assuming v4 based on what he later described), and he could no longer get on the Internet.

Same problem many are reporting here.

Too bad it was an old program because I would have called in.

I downloaded AVAST to my mom's computer in January. Seems to be OK on resources, but I'm REALLY not feeling the user interface.

No I was comparing Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) 11 to AVG 8.5 AV. SEP is the enterprise/corporate security suite of Symantec. Norton Internet Security 2009 is the consumer line security suite of Symantec.

The standard GUI looks horrendous indeed (the only negative point though) but it can be changed easily with one of the other skins on the Avast site.
    Cheers.

I know what SEP is. We're using it at work on a few machines. I was just referencing the footprint of 3MB for AVG; you were referring to the basic AVG AV not AVG Internet Security, correct? Because AVG Internet Security, which is similar in features to NIS2009, is way slower and bloated.

ATC, this was the OP original question. He wanted a free AV option. AVG Free is an option.

I use Kaspersky myself. The only part of it I use however, is the virus scanner. All the real time bullcrap on my computers are turned off.

Windows Firewall, UAC, and Defender for the most part stops any virus around. All that is left is the internet browser.
