I'm sure, most of you would've updated already by now. But thought i'd post the update here. Can't find a changelog yet though.
Downlod Link
Cheers.

Afaik it has new popup messages regarding the new Windows Activation Technology (new WGA) routine check, whether the OS is considered legal by Microsoft.
No idea about any enhancements... -
If that's the case then it seems that the only "enhancement" would be to Microsoft's bottom line if they can get some of those running pirated copies of Windows to pay up and become legit.
-
Maybe they fixed the hash error
But why not the Microsoft Link?
Or is that still the old file?

Did this version fix the automatic update (not updating after sleep, hibernate) issue?
-
Downloaded it earlier today.
-
I'm not quite sure. But I did hear a few ppl complain that the problem still exists.
-
It did fix the hash issue for me - logged as Even 5038 by the way.
Removed old MSE with Revo - then installed the new one. -
I used the upgrade method within MSE and it says my version 1.0.1611.0 is the latest.
-
I'm guessing we have to manually upgrade.
-
I'll wait till MS post it officially so we can download it within MSE.
-
I also tried the upgrade method from the old version but keeps saying the 1.0.1611.0 is the latest.
Ended up removing old MSSE via the uninstall route and installed the new version.
It's odd the upgrade feature is not working properly though. -
You can install the newer version over the older one as an upgrade.
-
I think I will do this as well.
-
That's because it IS the latest version.
If you go to MS website and download MSE v1.0.1611.0 is what you'll get. They'll eventually post the newer version so I can wait. -
I downloaded the latest version from MS website. They also post the old version sometimes.
-
Just an update. I'm using it now and it seems to be updating now. Although i did change the update interval to 3 hrs via registry.
-
Actually, no.
The 1.0.19 version was posted on MS website and the upgrade feature from within 1.0.16 still didn't register it.
That was days after the new version was posted. -
The latest version is 1.0.1961.0 from MS website.

I prefer Avast 5 , MSE does not warn/block spyware/mallware form downloading when you visit some websites.
-
Agreed that's where it's weak, good call. I recently got hit with the vrm.exe virus when trying to view a car repair video and the website requested to install a small program in order to watch the video. I got suckered too.
I'm going to give Avast 5 a try. -

MSE also does not scan emails , though some people say this function is not needed as the mail server will scan them, but i prefer to scan them myself.
-
My thoughts about Avast 5 vs MSE is that it's a little more resource and process heavy over MSE. But the interface update for Avast 5 is long overdue and looks utterly fantastic.
They did a great job where NOW you know where to find things. At present i'm running both A5 and MSE. -
thanks for the tip. it's odd that it's not the official download, but it's definitely a link from MS' website.
edit: 1.0.1961.0 is currently only for x86. x64 is still 1.0.1959. -
1.0.1961.0 (64 bit) also out now.
Link
Dont know why, but it didnt update via the ugrade component. Had to manually download and install. -
Really? In that case I might have to look for something else..as I consider that to be "essential" to security software....
EDIT: The MSE window says it scans all downloaded files and attachments.
-
It does scan downloaded files but it doesn't always alert you to danger as in my case. I was trying to view what I thought was a legit car repair video and MSE should have alerted me a virus was about to be installed. It didn't so I wound up with a virus called vrm.exe running in the background and slowing down my system.
I had no idea what vrm.exe was until I Googled it. Needless to say MSE let me down that time. Now I can't say if Avast 5 would have been any better because I wasn't using it. -

If you still have the vrm.exe file upload it to virustotal.com and see what scanner would have detected it.
-
Unfortunately I did a reformat so it's gone but a simple Google search indicates it's not good.

No antivirus software protects people from their own stupidity.
-
It's officially out now, showed up on Windows Update for me.
-
Build 1.0.1961 was out already.
-

Even so, it only appeared via Windows Live Update for me earlier tonight.
-
I was prompted within MSE when I rebooted my system. A popup message appeared from my taskbar stating a newer version was available.
-
How to check which version is installed?
-
Open MSE, click the Help down arrow, click "About MSE". MSE version number can be found there.
-
Click on upside down triangle, top right corner by Help -> About Microsoft Security Essentials.
-
Thanks. For some reason I thought that triangle is linked to help.
-
Anyone else having an annoying problem since installing the latest MSE build where MSE keeps setting off "Windows Update"? Instead of just updating the definitions, Windows Update now tells me to update the definitions every day.
-
No, I haven't seen that. My advice is to uninstall MSE then reinstall it. Btw it's now up to date on Microsoft's MSE website.
-

My advice is to uninstall MSE and install Avast 5 free
-
LOL, I thought you would say that.
-
I could try that, or I'm debating whether to install Avast 5, which I use on my other systems.
-
Can't say I see that either, but since a reinstall would fix it, it's up to you if you wanna try something else.
-
Well, not exactly. I uninstalled and reinstalled. It did not fix the problem. Windows update still keeps telling me I have an important update for MSE. I even tried "hiding" the update, but it just keeps coming back. This all started when I updated to the latest MSE build.
-
In the Windows Update setting, uncheck "Give me recommended updates..". Also update (if applicable) your Windows Update to provide updates for MS software.
-
This doesn't sound like the solution I'm looking for. :/ -
Try uninstalling MSE with revo uninstaller http://www.revouninstaller.com/ in advanced mode. That way see if RU will find stray registry entries that are triggering WU "important updates".
For the record they are appearing for me in WU as well but under "optional updates". -
OK. Maybe I'll try that tomorrow when I have time.
-
Just found this on another forum. I'm not alone, and MS is aware of the problem.

"Please be assured our developers do recognize this issue and are working on it. As this issue has been hard-coded in the program, it will take us some time to modify it. We appreciate your patience and understanding while we are working on this"
MSE v1.0.1959 out.
