So I saw this http://shop.symantecstore.com/DRHM/servlet/ControllerServlet?Action=DisplayProductDetailsPage&SiteID=symnahho&Locale=en_US&ThemeID=106300&Env=BASE&productID=108125400 and wanted to see if anyone has used it and if it is actually any good. Looks like Norton AV is starting to take a step in the right direction.

I have read that Norton has cut down on their demanding processes. There are many great options, but if they could couple this with a low resource firewall, they would have a new customer. Great find.
-
Or you could just buy a real anti-virus.
-
Why, what do you run?
-
NOD32
I will also accept:
BitDefender
Kaspersky (Prior to 2009)
Avira Antivir -
Hasn't Nod32 been plagued by issues in Vista until its latest release? I remember reading something about an anti-virus that was struggling.
-
I'm still running NOD32 2.7 since I don't like the interface of later versions, this is under Vista X64 SP1.
I can't say if NOD32 was that one that had problems, but I'd believe it. Nothing is perfect.
I will gladly move on from this as soon as it becomes a problem, I'm a BitDefender reseller anyway so it's about time I start using their product (well, start using it again... I used BD 8 a few years ago before I was a reseller). BD 2009 is pretty awesome, much improved over BD 2008. -
NOD32 2.7 was causing problems for me in Vista x64. It cut ALL connection to the net from my computer, except it let internet explorer through. So I decided to switch over to avast and haven't had any problems since.

I installed the Trial Ware of Norton Gaming Edition and must say that I was so impressed with how well it ran that I purchased it. It ran way better that AVG which I had before. I was going to buy NOD32 and have used it before but the new Norton seams to be a little easier to figure out and use with awesome performance.

The Gaming Mode sounds much like the already included Silent Mode to me...
-
I read about this - it's the same price as the regular 2009 version. So what's the downside? Or is it really just new features for the same price tag?
Not that I suspect there really is a downside, I was just surprised the price was exactly the same. Maybe it's primarily to try and attract gamers who would be less likely to notice it as a feature, while not turning off customers adverse to games. -

I must say that I am very impressed with Norton Gaming Edition. This is the first product of theirs that I actually like. I use to be big time anti Norton but now I would recommend this product to my best friend and mom if I had to.
I have been using it for 4 days now and have better system performance than I did with NOD32 or AVG. I don't get popups and the settings were very simple and self explanatory. It disabled Windows Defender and has it own little program that checks for spyware and the best thing is that both the antivirus and spyware only used under 4 megs of system ram and uses literally no CPU usage.
Well for those of you that knock Norton, I used to be with you. If you have not tried this then get the 30 demo and give it a try. This product will give the other AVs a good run for the money. -
hmm. Doesn't seem to be too big of a difference from NIS2009....
But you say it's better than NOD performance wise. I don't know, I noticed my startup increased by 1/2 a bar over NOD IS, it's nothing but just making a point that maybe the gaming edition is "faster".... although it should be, doesn't have a firewall or some other features I imagine... -

I tried BD before, a resource hog. AVG=light Avira=awsome

This definitely a step in the right direction for Symantec Corporation, however not so successful as it should be.
The Antivirus has been designed to reduce the overall utilization of of your CPU and Memory during "Gaming Mode" however this does not improve your overall experience.
Since installing the NAVGE "Norton Antivirus Gaming Edition" i have noticed that my Laptop Start up became much slower, Loading applications takes much more time than usual.
However that's the negative part, during gaming i didn't notice any major faults so far and i'm still comparing it with the following Av's :
- Mcafee
- NOD32
- AVG Pro
Overall rating 6 out of 10 for me...
Still its an interesting AV to support.

Norton has done really well this year. They've pretty much started from scratch and made a small lightweight antivirus that for the first time actually competes with the big boys, and IMHO, is better than them.
I use Norton Anti-Virus 2009 and it's awesome. This to me sounds like a tweaked version to make sure it definately doesn't interfere with your gaming. Sounds like a win to me, especially if you are a heavy PC gamer. If not however, and you only play games sometimes, i'd go with the standard version. After all, it's light on resources to start with, so only you can decide if you really need an ultra lightweight version for gaming. -
Hmm... I don't seem to be having any problems with NAV:GE. And neither have i experienced slowdown in the startup of programs or boot time. Could it be because you have another real-time ASW running as well?
When i used AV's like avast and Avira (and even nod32), i had to switch off real-time protection to get my renderings done quicker. Now with NAV:GE, i dont have disable real-time coz i find that the renderings take as much time as while i disable AVira or Nod32. But for some reason, i still trust avira more than any other AV. I'm just testing out this edition of norton coz i heard so much abt it and wanted to see for myself. I have to say i'm really impressed.
Cheers! -
I just wanted to note myself. I can't believe Norton is improving. I remember when I had Norton in the old days probably 2002 my computer ran so slow with Norton. I switched later to nod32 which what i liked was security and didn't slow it. Its about time Norton improved.
-
only drawbacks to nortons are the backround tasks it runs while idle and the auto deletion. these can not be turned off. other than that its a great product this year
-
I can't believe you guys are comparing Norton (which has always been a POS at detecting viruses and especially at cleaning! it never cleans properly) to the mighty NOD32
NOD32 FTW!!!!!!!!! -
honestly you should try it before you say that... i own and have clients that use both.. you really should try it
-

I have used both and liked the new Norton way better than NOD32. I was totally anti Norton until I tried the new 09 Norton. You should try it before you say something like POS which is a lame thing to say. -
10000% agreed ^^^
-
I have been using Norton Anti-virus from 2001, since i had desktop that time.
Now im using Norton Anti-virus 2009 Gaming Edition, Till today my puter never had single infections. i never switched to any other anti-virus software.
i have used all the versions of Norton anti-virus from 2001 till 2009
-
Norton 2009 is much better then NOD, I have used both. NOD has too many false positives in my OP.
-
With this buzz I think I may have to consider a switch. I use and recommend AVG to clients because it is easy to use and a good all-around (free) product. I may have to test out this new edition.
-
I am currently using Norton Antivirus Gaming Edition 2009, and so far, it's given me no problems, and has detected several things that NOD32 missed. It uses less than half the RAM used by NOD32 when it is minimized to the system tray, and about 2/3 the RAM used by NOD32 when the window is opened. They used about the same amount of RAM when scanning.
Scans on Norton are extremely fast after the initial full scan, with the Quick Scan taking under 10 minutes on my laptop. Browsing speeds and file transfers are approximately the same speed on Norton AV 2009 as on NOD32 (unnoticably slower than without an antivirus program).
Norton AV Gaming Edition 2009 is definitely the best antivirus I've used to date - secure, and skimpy on system resources. Only complaint is that the default skin is ugly, but that's easily changable in the settings.
(I have used Eset Smart Security (NOD32 + a firewall), Kaspersky IS, AVG, and McAfee before, so I have them as references)
