Metamorphical Good computer user
There are several free firewalls out there ( www.filehippo.com <-- Check the antivirus and personal protection section ). Zone Alarm's free firewall can get annoying but it gets the job done.

How would you rate Windows Default Firewall? ...never tried it ...
Can i Delete Norton AV & keep Norton Firewall? -
The new NOD32 v.3 comes in an edition with firewall
-
Windows default "firewall" is horrible. If you just use that you're pretty much not using one at all. Check out the 2nd sticky for some firewall recommendations.

U are rite jin ....Windows Defender & Firewall are a joke.
I ll checkout NOD32 Firewall Or Commoddo -
have you tried kaspersky internet security ?
it has virus protection and a good firewall. using it on my laptops and desktops for quite a while now. It´s fast and does not make any trouble.
//edit
comodo is very good if you have some experience with what you are doing ( what programs and what ports you are blocking). It´s not meant for absolute beginners, but once you have set up commodo you have a good protection. I´m using it together with the kaspersky firewall and both are running fine together. -
@jin07 and @nocturnal310:
. vista firewall and defender are not a joke (personal proof=never get an issue with malware since running ultimate from day 1). My only complaint was that vista firewall was not flexible as ZA (and now comodo) as in XP
. i did add avast AV from day 1 since that was the only one that did not give me any issues with vista compatibility
. never used any other firewalls until very recently with comodo
. zero issues with either performance or attacks (toi toi toi)
cheers ... -
First, I have to agree with qhn about the Windows products: they're not a joke, though, IMO, there are better products. I used Windows firewall for a long time before switching to Comodo.
FYI, NOD and Comodo work very well together. Each is installed on my eMachines desktop and I've never had any problems at all. Comodo has a "learning" setting which takes a little time to sort itself out and for the user to get acustomed to, but very quickly works perfectly, in my experience. -
I think defender is good, my issue is mainly with the firewall. Although I can't argue with your personal experience (obviously since it's your experience), I don't think one personal experience of not being infected will sway my opinion on it just yet. My guess is that you probably wouldn't get much malware anyway since you know so much about computers. You always seem to give out good advice. While I think Vista's built in firewall is better than XP's, I can't recommend using those firewalls when there are vastly better free alternatives. I still don't think the protection is adequate on the Vista firewall due to weak outbound security. To me, outbound security is vital. If I'm wrong about Vista's firewall, could you explain better? Perhaps I'm missing something.

I suggest giving these free alternatives a try.
Anti-virus
Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic
Firewall
ZoneAlarm Free
I've used these for many years now, and I've never had a problem.

u can get a 90 day trial of norton and later purchase it for only $35 bucks (3PC license)

Its subscription based like Norton btw...but much better & lighter
